    Default getting a business license

Ok. New plan. This is inspired by the best dancer outfit website thread. Since I can no longer buy items wholesale off their website, I'm thinking about applying for a business license. Why not? I can no longer see the point in buying outfits at retail price if I can get them much cheaper. I will then be able to sell a few outfits at my club for some extra cash.

Who here has experience of this nature? Is their something I'm not thinking through? It seems as simple as applying for a license, paying the appropriate fees, and paying taxes on any items that I make a profit off of. Right?

I attained my business license from www.legalzoom.com. You can call them directly to ask specific questions and they are very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. My business registration cost about $500, plus I filed as a foreign entity so that I could do business in two states, so that was another $250 or so. State tax in CA is high, but that was not an initial fee, it is an annual fee that was due one year after my business was established.

    Good luck,

This is probably a really stupid question but do people that sell things using paypal (like e-bay and personal online stores) need business licences?

No business license needed on E-Bay.

A business license is inexpensive. Just choose a few business names, go down to the County Clerks office, and see if one of the names you chose is not being used by anyone else. If not, file your paperwork under that name, and go where they tell you to pay your fee which may be $30-$50, maybe $100 in some counties.

In Phoenix, for example, you have to pay a city fee, and file a sales tax report each month, plus file paperwork with the AZ State Department of Revenue. Then each 20th of the month a sales tax and state tax form has to be filed for everything you sold IN AZ, as you are supposed to collect sales tax on all in state sales. If you sell out of state, the forms still must be filed but no paymets are due. A $50 renewal fee is due each year for the license there.

I think I paid less than $100 for both, but since we have a corporation, paid to publish the filing in the legal paper, which was another $89.

In California, you go to the County Clerks office and follow the same procedure, and then apply for a Resale License.

Most of the companies once you submit your Resale or Business License, will ask for a credit card to put on file, and everytime you order will bill that card. Some companies are less formal than others. Some have no minimum order, and others have minimums of $100-$300 per order, or for your first order and no minimums thereafter. Some companies will allow drop ships, which means that you can place orders for your customers and for an additional $5 fee, they will bill your card, and ship the order to your customer directly.

I was just talking about this with local theater performers as I am working on putting together a two-person show and I'm thinking about costs/profits/taxes/etc.

Apparently a business license in my city is $25 if you have no employees (my 2nd person, boyfriend, said he would perform on a volunteer basis :-) ) and if you want to file a fictitious business name its like $75 in fees to file and run it in a paper for how ever many weeks is necessary. If you are just doing it for cheap costumes I dont even think the fictitious business name would be necessary.

Thanks guys! I think I'm gonna go for it. I guess the first step would be to get myself down to the county clerks office and ask for directions. They'll be able to tell me everything I need to do. All that paperwork sounds like a bit of a hassle for only selling a few outfits or so every month. Is it very complicated, Tina? If it's simple and staightforward I'm sure I can handle it, but I just want to know beforehand so I know what I'm getting into. Still, it sounds worth it so far.

It's easy Jessica. Just go down there and they'll tell you everything. You can do it all in less than one day.
