Default Just To Be Perfectly Clear:

Weight loss (whether healthy or unhealthy or whatever) is caused by burning more calories than you consume, weight gain is caused by consuming more than you burn, and maintainence is consuming the same amount burned, RIGHT?

So technically, if I eat something really calorie-laden like a greasy cheeseburger and ice cream for dessert, but I burn more calories than the food contains, I'll still lose weight, right? And this is totally disregarding health concerns like cholesterol and stuff, I'm ONLY talking about calories and weight loss --I KNOW it's not healthy to eat that kind of shit all the time, I don't need a lecture on that in this thread, this is only about caloric intake.

    So I'm right, right?

^^^that's my understanding, too. But, I've also read you have to burn 3500 calories to lose one pound... I dunno how or if that fits into the cheeseburger equation.

3500? Man I just came home from one hour at the gym and I'm exhausted. And I KNOW I didn't burn that much.

It's not possible to burn that many calories in one day, which is why many experts recommend losing 1-2 pounds a week as a healthy rate.

I think it is about calories in versus calories out to some extent, but that's not all. If you eat too much of one type of food (protein, fat, or carbs), your body will be more likely to store it as fat. That's why it's important to eat a balanced diet while still keeping calories in check. That's what my old trainer told me. Don't know if it's true or not, but it makes sense.

A cheeseburger also won't give you the kind of energy that say, a really good salad would, and you need that energy to keep going during the day - and you also do most of your calorie burning without thinking about it, like walking around, stretching, doing laundry, stuff like that. So you need a healthy diet with lots of vitamins and minerals to keep healthy and active.

But I know what you're saying, and ya, I think it is just a simple math equation, but we all know intuitively that we also need to eat healthy for other, more complex reasons than just weight.

I never understood this either. I had a gym membership once and a lot of the equipment would tell you approximately how many calories you were buring while you were on it. You had to be on an exercycle for a quite a while (and at a good speed) just to get into triple digits-- that start with 1. I was like: "Well that takes care of one cookie from the whole box I ate." lol.

With as many calories as I take in a day there's no possible (or safe) way I could exercise them off and create a deficit.

Even when I was on a weird '900 calories a day or less' diet I still don't know how I would have had the time to work off those 900 calories. And that's not even a safe number lol!

^^You'll create a deficit because your body is burning calories keeping you alive...it doesn't all have to come from excercise!

Thermodynamics- works for everyone. Eventually. That's why anyone can starve to death.

But, different foods cause different glycemic reactions, different people have different metabolisms...so some people can lose weight quickly, while others will lose it much slower, even if they are eating/ doing the exact same thing. But yeah, if you have a caloric deficit, you will lose weight. Your body burns a certain amount everyday to keep you alive, and you burn more for excercise...if you excercise more, and eat less, you will lose weight. It just may take more time for some unfortunate souls. If you're like me, and your body would really rather stay a bit curvy, you have to give it more time and work a lot harder...still, anyone can lose weight with that equation. But you ought to pay attention to things like nutrition, for health reasons.

Would someone with an average metabolism burn more calories naturally throughout the day or during an hour-long aerobic workout? ...I don't know if that question makes sense.

^You burn more calories in your sleep than you do in one hour on the treadmill. The 300 or so work-out calories is in addition to the 1000-2500 calories a body burns everyday just by keeping you alive. This site will help you figure out how many calories you burn daily... http://www.calorie-count.com/calorie...ies-burned.php

To create a deficit, you'll want to eat fewer calories than the number that site gives you. Exercise gives you a bigger deficit so you can lose weight faster.

eating junk will give you a different body structure. You may weigh the same if you eat a certain amount of calories in junk/verses healthy food but you will not be lean and more toned.

I have a friend that ate fatty food every day, ate only once a day and a snack and went to the gym. It was just not working out for her. She started eating more lean meat and veggies and she didn't have to push so hard with the cardio.

Now she can maintain her weight by doing limited cardio and free weights. She looks stellar btw.

Once you start cutting out the crap cheeseburgers and the fries, ice cream, etc., your body will come less accustomed to it anyway. You will start to crave better food and have a better lifestyle for yourself.

^Well said. I don't count calories at all. I count junk food and fatty crap out of my diet. Don't get me wrong, I love steak, a couple of small hamburgers every now and then, and I LOVE sweets and pastries... but I consider those things to be treats for myself when I know I am doing good. I NEVER deprive myself. All things in moderation, including moderation.

And also eating healthily will allow you to eat more often during the day (compared with one high calorie meal for the same amount of calories). This in turn will speed up your metabolism and increase your basal metabolic rate, so your body will burn more calories just to operate properly.

For the most part yes, eating more than you burn off creates weight gain however you can also gain weight just by putting on muscle. But that isn't a bad thing in my book.

Most likely throughout the day. I can't imagine burning 1,500 calories in one hour. As for the OP, don't stress the cheeseburger. Just eat well for the next couple of days and you'll make up for it easily. I highly doubt you consumed 3,500 calories (1lb of fat) in a burger and some ice cream.

Yep, you burn a lot of calories just by walking around and doing your thing. Fewer by sitting on your duff. You don't have to count them to be burning them.

Another thing to keep in mind is that weight loss is not necessarily the same as fat loss & figure improvement. When I started working out and then started dancing, I ended up eating a lot more and my weight actually went up five pounds, because I'd never had muscle before. But I lost a lot of fat and looked a lot thinner. I think I weigh less now than I did then, but I have a lot more of a belly.

Muscle speeds metabolism, so does eating frequent small meals, as aussiebelle said above.

One more thing to remember is that in the course of a day, eating 1500 calories (consisting of an Extra Value meal with a super-size fries) will still create a deficit. However, you can only digest so many calories in one sitting before your body stores the rest as fat, which is why small meals are a good idea.

Just remember that you can still have your burger and eat it too, if you buy quality ingredients and prepare them to minimize fat and grease. Put a 98% lean patty on the grill, skip the cheese, pile on the lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard and ketchup, put it on a whole wheat bun and bam, you've got 1/3 the calories and a healthy balanced meal.

Like I said, I know the cheeseburger isn't nutritious, but I can't eat celery and air all the time, I love to eat, and if I don't give myself a break from the healthy foods that I don't like, I'll end up pigging out badly and ruining everything for myself. So I'm just trying to fit in an indulgence once or twice a week, but keep from gaining weight from it.

I'm also in the market for healthy food I really enjoy. I always have fresh fruit and veggies in my fridge, but I'm used to eating lots of protein to keep me full, so I can't live off just that. But I have switched to sodium-free whole wheat pasta and organic sauce, etc. I'm working on it, but flavors aren't the same as what I'm used to at Olive Garden lol.

How the hell do you go from celery to cheeseburger?

You've never heard of like... lamb and lentil soup? or like... mediterranian couscous? broiled lemon pepper chicken?

You can eat healthy without eating celery and air.

I like the "plus" pasta. It's got more protein than the whole wheat variety and tastes more like regular pasta. Also, don't underestimate the power of soup! Even a good rich New England clam chowder is about 200 calories a bowl, and very filling. Sushi is low in calories and has a decent amount of protein. If you have a Super Target near you, check out their stuffed salmon and tilapia filets--those are AWESOME and only 400 calories each.

Instead of eating healthy things you have to gag down, try making healthy versions of the foods you DO like. It'll be a lot easier to feel satisfied and stick with the diet.

^That's ultimately my goal. I'm in a place in my life right now that means my hectic schedule and stretched budget can't find a place for much more than fast food, but within the next month or two, I'm going to have the money and time to fill my fridge and pantry and I'm really excited to put yummy and good-for-you food in there!

the cheeseburger doesn't have the fiber, enzymes, nutrients, or vitamins that your body needs.

    aka no weightloss.

what you are getting?- antibiotics/hormones/bacteria in the meat and cheese. hydrogenated unheathly oils. white flour and a chemical laden preserved piece of lettuce..............
