    Default Natural market, vegetarians?

So, I went to the natural market today since I have decided to become a vegetarian (except fish) and eat more organic foods. I picked up some of those Amy's soups and dinners as well as some Boca Burgers. I was wondering if any of you that are vegetarian might have some other recommendations or comments on my selections?

^^^ okay, dokey- I was a psudeo-vegitarian for 4 years... ovo-lacto with a side of seafood. Some meat free items I loved were:

-soy pepperoni slices... they're friggin' good! Great on salads or get the large slices for sandwiches.
-Tamari soaked tempeh strips... throw 'em on top of rice, steamed veggies, salads, etc.
    -Amy's individulay wrapped burritos- nummy!
-Hummus & rice cakes or pita bread... hummus is actually really easty to make, too.

I did a lot more cooking when I didn't eat land animals jsut because it was more economical. If you can find it, I highly recommend Tofu Cookery... it's a vegan cookbook but it's got quite a few delicious recipes- surprisingly, I loved italian "meat" balls and the tofu "meat"loaf. There's also a Korean marinade in there that effin' rocks as a marinade/glaze for fish and chicken.

Not to be nit picky, but please dont call yourself a vegetarian if you eat fish. You are a pescetarian. Its kind of a pet peeve with most veggies since restaurants and such will cook thinks with fish and call them vegetarian.

Anyway...beans are great...tons of protein and fiber. Tofu is good, though I've ionly had the icky stuff you get in japanese restaurants so I havent had any I like(though I'm counting on Yek to cook me some good tofu when I come to Portland!)

If you want fake chicken,Quorn is the best(though dont eat too much..most is high in sodium). The greuere(sp?)chicken is SO yummy!!!

I didn't know there was a different term, thanks for clarifying that. I'll have to check out the different terms and such regarding selective meat-eatting.

I use to go fishing quite a bit and I don't feel like it's as bad as a slaughter house is. Just my opinion here..

I love Quorn "chicken" products, Cameron is right, their gruyere chicken is awesome.

Morningstar Farms is pretty good, I like their corn dogs, and crumbles (like ground beef, good for tacos, casseroles, etc.) and I think it's Morningstar Farms that has faux boneless ribs... yummmmm!

Personally, I hate Tofurkey, but everyone needs to try it at least once just cause of the name, hehe.

I'd recommend buying one new thing to try every time you go to the store, that way you can really find out what you like and what you don't.

Tofutti has lots of products that are good. They make mock cream cheese, sour cream, and yummy ice cream sandwiches.

Also, you can try your store's exotic food section. Many Thai and Indian dishes are veg and delicious.

I love Tofurkey! I personally don't like Boca burgers (although their chicken patties are awesome!).

There was a great fake meat product thread a couple of months ago, but I can't find it. I love Tofurkey lunchmeats, Gimme Lean Sausage, Boca and Gardenburger chicken patties. You can make a great meatload with Gimme Lean Ground Beef.

quorn has eggs in it... so it's not vegetarian.

If you want good tofu, get the extra firm tofu and press the water out of it with paper towels. It also helps if you freeze it first, it makes the texture firmer. If you marinate it before you cook it, it's also good.

My favorite brand is white wave baked tofu. there's also yves that makes fake chicken strips. I'd try to steer clear of most fake meats though, they're not that healthy, but I guess they're good if you're trying to avoid meat.

Definitely try hummus/pita bread or rice cakes.. hummus is good. I like nuts too... so I get trail mix with almonds, raisins, sunflower seeds, etc.

Morningstar Farms spicy black bean burgers!!!!!!!!! Delicious!!

ETA: Avocado is great, too. I use avocado with rice (brown) and beans. It's a very Puerto Rican/Caribbean meal, but I don't know many who don't like it. You can also put avocado on your veggie burgers, which I love (just had one tonight)
