Default Spin off from another thread, do you eat meat, why or why not?

I have recently decided to exclude land animals from my diet. My reason being for health reasons and discovering how animals are treated at slaughter houses. I thought it would be interesting to do a poll for curiosity's sake more than anything regarding which meats we eat or don't eat and why. For those of you that pratice a vegetarian, pescetarian, pollotarianism diet, etc., what are your reasons? For those of you who eat all types of meat have you considered not eatting meat, why or why not?

I was a vegetarian for years. I go back and forth. I cant eat red meat because of health issues, but I currently eat poultry and fish occasionally. I eat vegetarian about 80-90% of the time. Partly for health issues and partly for my disgust at the slauterhouse/meat farming industry.

I stopped eating meat at 15. I just really never liked much in the way of red meat, and I learned about factory farming and just couldn't do it anymore. I'm not always a good vegetarian, because I love Jello, but I've never missed meat.

I eat every meat except pork. I find pork to be disgusting, the texture, smell, and to know that they eat thier own shit & vomit grosses me out too.

Edit: I also try to eat red meat once a week.

Eat all meats and always looking for a new delicacy or something I haven't tried before.

I just love meat and for me nothing will ever beat a well cooked (not "Well Done", Medium/Medium Rare for me) steak.

I eat all types of meat except for the really weird stuff (to me, at least) i.e; deer, veal, squirrel, alligator, etc. I have to have red meat at least once or twice a week. I love beef too much, and my body knows when I need it.

I don't usually eat meat. Right now I'm not eating it at all and haven't been for months. I hesitate to say I'm a vegetarian because if I decide I want something like a Ceasar salad I'm gonna have it (Ceasar dressing has anchovie paste).

The reason I don't eat meat is because it's really gross. There is always fat in it, or if you get a lean chicken breast, you will see a big red vein sometimes. YUCK!!! I'm gonna hush now before I make myself sick.

I don't eat any meat. I used to love the taste of it--in fact, my favorite foods as a kids were steak and ribs. But I don't think I have a right to pay someone to confine and torture animals just so I can enjoy certain tastes that I like. There are a lot of immoral, illegal, or distasteful things that people would like to do if they could, but there are consequences that keep you from doing every little thing you want to do. For me, the suffering of animals is a big negative consequence.

There is nothing natural about modern day factory farming. As in all industries, acceptible practice is determined by whatever is best for the bottom line. This means horrific abuses of animals (intense confinement, inhumane slaughter, routine mutilations, etc) and health risks for people (anti-biotics, growth hormones, etc.)

Most people aren't aware of this, but there are only a couple of state laws and no federal laws that protect animals on factory farms and only one law--the Humane Slaughter Act--that protects them at the moment of slaughter. The rub? There is no mechanism within that act for enforcement.

Exactly the same! I cannot stand pork. Otherwise, it's open season when I sit down to eat.

If there was no such thing as cheeseburgers, bacon slices or hot wings- I would be a veg. Those 3 are the only meat stuff I eat. No porkchops, lambchops, ribs not even steak.

I am going to be a pescetarian(thanks Cameron).

If I try really hard to just stick it out I know I can do it. It makes me physically sick when I think of the way the animals are treated in the factories. When I see something in the news about how a pet was tortured I don't even feel like I should express any horror since I eat animals that were treated the same, or far far worse.

I love all sorts of meat though. Especially fried chicken and burgers.

I am a meat eater but do love good vegetarian food. I eat at http://www.udupipalace.com/ several times a year.

LOL, when I was young, a friend and I always went to the local Hare Krishna Temple on weekends to eat their food and discuss eastern philosophy. Those people can cook.

I used to be a vegetarian from the time I was twelve, just because I didn't like meat. I don't think I've ever had a steak or burger. For that reason I also don't like "fake meat" products.

However, for the past five years I have started eating seafood so I guess I'm now a pescatarian, since seafood is considered meat. I will never eat any other meat besides seafood. I also only purchase wild caught seafood rather than farm raised.

I've become more socially aware, support animal rights and their humane treatment. I try to purchase products that are not tested on animals.

Off topic story. I used to work with this one bitch, who also happened to be vegan. She was a cutt-throating, shit talking, drunk, dirty whore. In addition she would go on and on about how nasty meat was to the rest of us. So, one day I had enough and screamed at her, "You know kindness should start with your own species!"

To each their own. I don't ever try to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't be eating. It's a personal choice that's none of my business.

I don't care if you're vegan, vegetarian, carnivore or whatever just don't be a judgmental ass!

I agree, it's personal choice. I do ask people who are coming over if there anything they do not eat so I can fix dishes for them but I'll also have dishes I like.

I have a feeling this thread can and will turn nasty.

Im leaving my thoughts at this though.

When I was younger I did a report on horse slaughter and I found out a lot of companies will sneak horse meat into ground beef to make it taste richer.

That made me cry and feel sick.....

I have been veggie for almost my whole life. I don't eat any meat, except for fish sometimes. Usually b/c I am a a restaurant w/a group of people and their is no other choice.

I was a vegetarian for a long time, but I feel better when I eat meat. Rob is also a big meat eater.

We do not eat pork (well, he occassionally eats it out but not when I'm there), but we eat steaks, chicken, and seafoods.
