I get what you're saying (i think) when people engage in certain behaviors it does effect society as a whole.
I'm not trying to be argumentative but in the spirit of discussion; by that philosophy everyone should not smoke, drink or eat diets high in fat or sugar ect...
I guess I value personal freedom above moral judgment.
I LOVE meat. There is no way I could give it up. With that said, I don't eat it every day, because I like a lot of other foods like veggies, mushrooms, etc. I sometimes feel bad, because I know that bad things happen to animals in slaughterhouses. I have tried to go without meat, but I just can't. If I don't have red meat every do often I start craving it, like I'm missing something important in my diet if I don't eat it.

I don't eat meat because I don't like it.
I do love slim jims though! And I like fish.
I will eat it on pizza or sandwiches sometimes but I never eat pork cops, steak or hamburgers. I don't eat bacon because it's so bad for you.
Meaty things are usually just so greasy. bleh!
I totally agree. I've been a vegetarian for 17 years now. I will keep my mouth shut when others chew their steaks around me, but you would not believe how many meat-eaters criticize my vegetarian diet, saying it's "weird" or what have you.
If I'm nice enough to respect their dietary choices, then they should be nice enough to respect mine.
AMEN! I have never once attempted to "educate" a meat-eater, condemn them for what they're eating, etc. I will only talk about my choices if specifically asked, as in this thread.
But lordy, lordy do people love to give me shit about my choices! It's constant. I can't hardly have a meal with a mixed group of people without an interrogation, tasteless and humorless jokes, and just plain ingnorant nastiness. My favorite: "Well I LOVE meat!" That's awesome, dude. You want a medal? And everyone who has ever suggested to me that PETA stands for People Eating Tasty Animals has thought they were the cutest, most original little jokester in the world. Dozens of them. Oh, and no my shoes aren't leather.![]()

I'm not sure I get the connection between smoking or drinking and eating meat. Are you positioning all of these behaviors in a moralistic framework? It's not a moral choice for me at all, but an ethical one. Inflicting suffering on other sentient beings is not the equivalent of having a cig, in my opinion. To hell with morals...![]()
^^
I totally agree that it's disgusting and horrible how animals are treated in certain meat packing plants, and I personally try to avoid this by buying (for my own home, not when I go out to eat) free range meats or eggs from free range chickens.
Personally, I have anemia.... I wouldn't fuck around with not eating meat. While their are vegetarian options for protein, it would be a lot of work and constintantly monitoring my diet to do it that way.
Beyond that, I do love meat. I have (although am much better, and I would say in recovery from) an eating disorder and I won't do anything to limit my diet or certain types of foods.
That said, I have the upmost respect for vegetaians, but because of my health/mental issues, it's not for me....And, although some of you may disagree with this and I understand, my health and well being (as all people's is) is more important to me than an animals.
I am vegan in lifestyle and diet.
I don't try to change people's minds about eating meat anymore, I just lead by example, 4 of my friends have gone vegan after living/spending time with me, because I'm RARELY sick, my skin is clear, I cook and bake really yummy food, I have tons of energy and am really healthy.
For people who say make fun of me, I just tell them they are what they eat. So if you eat steak- you're a cow. if you eat bacon- you're a pig. If you eat dairy- you're cow puss and slaughtered cow fetuses (veal).

Anything but cetaceans or primates. I think I'd have trouble with those. I've chowed down on everything else, I think, including insects when the time is right. I do eat far less red meat than I used to and less meat in general.
We are, through evolution and structure, omnivorous. Life feeds on death. But if someone wants to limit their food choices because of moral or dietary philosophies, that's fine with me. I won't argue or judge. I'll take extra time when they visit my place to make sure their dietary needs choices are met.

I'm just yer everyday cannibal. WHere's my damn poll option???

personally, i prefer to think of meat in the older sense-- any flesh of any living thing, without an arbitrary distinction between animal/non-animal. and by that more accurate standard, i eat meat every day.
a more interesting question to ask would be 'do you eat only dead flesh not acquired by harvesting or slaughter?' there are a few who do, even to eating only fallen fruit rather than plucking any. not a scalable diet, but certainly the way to go if one's concern is about not having living things killed to feed you.

^nice, lol.

Guy #1: I'd totally hit that.
Guy #2: Dude, I'd hit that so hard whoever could pull me out would become the King of England.
This argument directly contradicts science. It is well-documented that plant organisms do not have fully developed central nervous systems nor are capable of feeling pain. I never said I had anything against killing...I'm all about slaughtering the living shit out of some collard greens, sweet potatoes, and soy beans. Especially soy beans. I will kill a soybean dead. It's just suffering I have an issue with, personally.
