I was just wondering if cat lovers replace the litter box every couple of months?
I was just wondering if cat lovers replace the litter box every couple of months?
Yes. Especially plastic pans because over time the urine soaks into the plastic itself.
I dont replace the whole box. Every cpl months I soak them in a bleach and water solution and scrub them down.
Just letting Cam and Rozz know: even if you scrub them and bleach them, they are plastic. Plastic is porous. Urine WILL soak into the plastic.
Wow, I didn't know it could soak through. I've had the same one for a year now! Looks like it might be time to treat kitty to some PetSmart gifts!
I really like the BoodaDome litterboxes, with the little steps![]()

Well i clean mine out often but usually replace at least every three-four months. Usually when the box is so full and i am so damn lazy i figure its time to buy a new one![]()
I know it still soaks in...but the urine smell (that you cant smell when the box is clean because cats sense of smell is WAY better then humans) is part of what draws them back to the litterbox. So unless it is just beyond cleaning..I dont replace it.
Wow, I've had mine for over a year. Yucky.

Yup, every couple months I grab a new one. Even when I've clean-cleaned them, they still have that yummy, musty, cat-piss aroma.
*Mini kitty-lover threadjack* - Anyone have those self cleaning litter boxes? I'm so tempted every time I see them at the store...
They can smell their way back to their litterbox well enough when it's brand new with litter and footprints in it. They don't need months of soaked in urine to lead then back. That explains why cats will find the brand new litter in the brand new box just fine, especially if you keep the new pan exactly where the old one was.
Mine have a habit of pissing on the floor 2 inches from the litterbox whenever they are mad at me(when I go out of town,we have friends over,I dont clean it RIGHT after they use it...they are total PIA's about it) so meh. I get new boxes about once a year or so.I mean,my bathroom will smell like cat piss abut 50% of the time anyway because my cats are little divas!

I've only had my cat for 3 months, but I never even thought about replacing her litter box. I do soak it in a bleach solution every Friday and replace all of the litter in it every Friday. But since I'm going to Petsmart today, I guess I'll pick up a new one.

wow, lol. Replace the litter box?
I've had the same one as long as I've had my cats. 3 years next month.![]()
never thought to replace it. i mean, it was a nice expensive one. the big ass covered thingy.
and stupid question..what's it matter if urine is soaked into the plastic? it doesn't smell, it doesn't like, seep onto the floor... I don't even bleach it. Am I a horrible pet owner? I just change the litter when needed and scoop daily. sometimes I rinse it out, but that's a big job cause I have to do it in the bathtub and then I have to clean littershitpiss out of the tub and that's gross. I bathe in there.
meh. I dunno.

I bought a big, covered one that's pretty durable. I change the litter and liner twice a week and clean the box out with bleach maybe once a month. Works pretty well for me!
ETA-I want to buy a cat genie. I hate cleaning out the litter box! If only money would be decent at work...![]()
I don't replace the box or bleach it. I guess I'm a slob then. The last box lasted us about two years, I think, and then when we moved to Portland we got a new one so we wouldn't have to have the old nasty one in the moving van with us. I scoop it out every day or every other day, and replace the litter as needed. Works for us.
I think changing it every so often is sanitary. Bleach cleans the surfaces, leaving the bacteria to soak in. Call me crazy, but I don't find that clean.
I replace it every other year but I wash it every other day. I use a little bit of litter and as soon as the day is over I clean it or dump it if it's too dirty. I do the shelter way, little bit and clean often.
I replace it but that's because my bathroom is pretty tiny and I have no hose or anything to use to wash the box outside. Also I'd rather pay the 20 bucks than risk clogging the drain with litter and doing the nasty bleaching and washing. I think it's fine to either replace or wash thoroughly, but I would do at least one of those things every so often. If you use the liner bags it will buy a little more lifetime.
DON'T USE BLEACH!!!
Bleach mixed with ammonia (in urine) creates toxic fumes. I used to do the exact same thing- dump it out and scrub it with bleach water and an old sponge, but now I just wash them with dish soap once a month and I always wear rubber gloves.
I toss and buy new ones ever so often. I actually spent $30 each on nice domed boxes that you could tilt and have the litter fall into a little drawer. Then you are supposed to open the drawer, and voila, easy cleanup. Not so much, and the kittens always had accidents.
My big cat goes outdoors, has for years. Unfortunately my little boy will stay outside for a while, then come inside to take a huge dog sized dump in his box. Eventually they get so gross its not worth it to clean them.
