    Default med warnings?! eek!

ok, i know you guys hate cosmo. but i was flipping through in the bathtub just now and there's an article about "safe" drugs. a chart was in there, listing a drug, and the dangers of mixing them with every day things, like the pill.

xanax or valium - use caution with the pill, antihistimines, antibiotics, antidepressants, cough medication, narcotics. any of these things can cause decreased efficacy or a buildup of xanax in the blood.

oral contraceptives, it says, when mixed with anxiety meds, can decrease efficacy of the pill and ativan, and again, cause a buildup of xanax or valium in the blood.

it lists painkillers too, that i think are kind of "duh" blurbs, but the pill/anxiety combo part freaked me out. im on the pill, and the doctor didnt tell me that it would have ANY affect when he prescribed ativan OR xanax to me. and antihistimines? like claritin? that i took this morning?

You can go on drugs.com and check drug interactions.Just plug in the names of everything you are taking and it will tell you if there are any interactions between them from taking them together

"Oral contraceptives may prolong the half-life of certain benzodiazepines that undergo hepatic oxidative metabolism (such as diazepam and chlordiazepoxide). Other benzodiazepines also may participate in this interaction. Close observation for signs and symptoms of altered benzodiazepine effect is recommended."

thats what it said when i went on drugs.com. but.. isnt it a GOOD thing if the half life is longer? i thought that was one of my reasons i wanted ativan at first. the half life was longer..

now i'm all kinds of confused.

and it says nothing about the pill being less effective.. so hopefully its not. not that im having sex anyway haha.

It's not just drug interactions that are worrying, its the side effects of the drugs themself!
My antidepressant warns the common side effects: "Increase in suicidal thoughts,Anxiety, agitation, or panic attacks". Yes, note COMMON!
one rare side effects is "Congestive heart failure"

Doctors receive only a couple of hours of pharmacological training in medical school, and very little required continuing education. Three doctors I know have confirmed this to me, they are not always aware of these things. Your pharmacist, not the techs, will know more about interactions. They are there to help you, always ask if you have any questions!!

A few years ago, my shrink put me on 2 meds that caused a decrease in the seizure threshold when taken together. Dr. never told me, the pharmacist requested that I speak to her when I filled the script, and let me know.

I love when the side effects listed are worse then what you are taking the drug FOR.

I read all of the known side effects of Wellbutrin, and they found one case of "female priapism". Look it up, kind of funny.
