    Default My roof just collapsed!

I was just turning on the computer to answer some e-mails and then go to SW, when there was a roar like a freight train and a crack. Snow came down from an upper roof, hit the roof over my second floor deck, and the deck roof and deck itself all collapsed in about five seconds.

I live in a duplex, and the couple that live across the deck from me were very shook up--they had just come in from dinner, and we all walk under that deck to get back and forth from the garage. There would have been no escaping the collapse. I was there just an hour before. So I write this to warn my fellow SWs, especially in the snow-heavy New England area, to be careful of walking beneath decks and eves if you have another route. Roof collapses are happening all over the area now, but you never think it will happen to you.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to look at the bright side of things. I have a better view of the moon and mountains out my sliding glass door tonight, and I'm thinking perhaps I can start a rumor that I was making wild, passionate love when this happened--sometimes my ardor just has this effect on buildings. I don't know if anyone will buy it, but it's worth a shot.

Seriously, everyone, please be aware of this and take care.

    Thank goodness everyone is okay!!

When our house burned down over a year ago, my room was the attic/loft and I had just began painting the walls when it burned, so I had all these cans of paint up there and during the fire everyone said they exploded. The roof was ripped off of my room and we were all like: "Damn, what a nice view!" Talk about a skylight.

Zinaida, thank you, and I'm glad you were okay also during the creation of your skylight! I can see all of the night sky myself now, and I have a powerful incentive not to do any sleepwalking--I keep the deck door, which is about twenty feet above the ground, locked.

I know, LiveFree, huh? It sounds like something out of a Ben Stiller movie. I just woke up to a dream that there was a giant snake in my house and simultaneously the plumbing had blown--all of this following half the house collapsing.

I have to say, though, that there is cultural value here. My former deck, a tumble of boards and nails and plastic looks, under the moonlight, like a monument to George Bush's presidency.

Good to hear no one was hurt! I have to wonder though...

Why arn't people just cleaning off their roofs? When I lived up north we did that after every major snowfall.

In our case (I'm renting part of a duplex from a landlord) we cleaned the thing off as best we could, but it is high and steep (we were using large snow-rakes) and there were some sections we just couldn't get to. I'm sure that's true in other cases, too; in ours, there was a section of the house that never seemed built properly and when, after snow and ice and snow and ice again in a two day period the stuff started sliding. I've lived here all of my life, and I've never seen a winter as bad as this! I think it makes the case for a good, steep A-frame.

Anyway, didn't mean to complain--just wanted to warn everyone to look up at the ice coming down off the edge of houses. In a lot of cases it is heavy enough to really do some damage.

Why does your situation remind me of Dulplex the movie? I'm real sorry that happened and glad everyone is ok. You seem to be in wonderful spirits considering your roof is missing. Complain all you want - your roof just caved in.

    Thank you, TM!

I know, I've been remembering a movie called "The Money Pit" -- that's what this seems to be. I have to look on the good side of things...the snow has piled up on the roofs, but it is also on the mountains and we'll have spring skiing here for a good while to come. There is a good side to all such situations!

Thank you, HHL. I'm glad everyone is okay on your end as well--that's pretty scary stuff. I'm glad the hubby and baby are all right.

My husband specializes in deck building, and it is amazing how little notice is paid to the structural integrity of decks as compared to other parts of the building.

I've seen some decks that I refused to walk on because the way it was supported was not just questionable, but damn scary! So often, to save money, homeowners will simply replace the rotted boards on the top but leave the rotted sub structure where all the support needs to be.

I'm glad you are okay. Do you have to replace this yourself or are you a renter?

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

Paris, I am, luckily in this case, a renter. I hope insurance will cover this for the landlord, who is a good guy and has discovered, slowly, that the house he bought was poorly built (or added on to) in some places. I know exactly what you mean by refusing to get on some decks. You must have even more that feeling because you've seen the inside of the business. This deck--and it was a large one, about fifty feet by fifteen--tore completely off the house with the roof above it and we realized it had only been fixed to the house at a few points. It was always shaky. I had pretty much stopped using it, but was still walking UNDER it, which wasn't too smart. Lesson learned.

Thank you for the good wishes.

How much snow have you had there?

We had over 9 feet of snow here this winter season, but not too much at once (20 miles north it is a different story). At this point there is little snow left except the piles on big parking lots, but nothing outside is green yet, just gray. Looks like we survived yet another upstate NY winter. Any year it could be a different story.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

I know your area always has a good deal of snow, threlayer--it seems to be in a "snow belt"--we have the same situation here. I'm in the Merrimack Valley, at the beginning of the white mountains, and I'm not sure of the footage, but I think it is thus far the second highest snowfall on record--the first going back to the 1800's. The snow was falling so frequently that I had to laugh--I had to dig my way IN to the driveway coming home from work one night, and then OUT of the driveway going back to work the following morning. But even as I was digging what the snowplow left me I couldn't help thinking what a beautiful night it was, with all the snow falling. I love the winter, but feel sad for those going through all this problem with buildings. Have you had the same troubles there?

Judging from the quotes on your post I have a feeling you might agree with my suspicion--that perhaps the contractor who put up our deck and roof was named George Bush. I knew he was doing SOMEthing before he became president--now we've solved the mystery!

Wow! So glad you're ok!!! Don't they have contraptions like rakes used to pull snow off of roofs? I gotta say I don't miss the snow or driving in it. Hugs to you! Thanks for surviving the inclimate weather!!!

The real snow belt is a few miles north of me where they really get it bad. I saw a new tiny crack in a ceiling sheet rock in another house I was in a few years ago; that was the first year I heard about this type event. We had more roof collapse events in previous years, including half a Walmart SuperCenter collapsing ("welcome to Walmart, snowman"). There was a schoolbus/snow removal equip garage's roof that collapsed and a few houses this season.

I made my points in the old Political Poo forum several years ago. I'd have more to say about the financial situation if it was still open for posting. The rest of it hasn't changed.
