    Sad Making Roots Look Good

I have roots... looooong roots. My hair is naturally light brown I dye it platinum and the contrast makes my roots look even darker.

Since I am recovering from a pretty hardcore medical procedure I want to hold off on going to the salon. I'm just too lazy to mess with a dye job while I'm not currently employed.

So I guess my question is: are there any creative hair styles/do's that make roots less obvious?

I would suggest "messy" up dos to camoflauge roots. use your curling iron to curl tendrils of hair around your face to distract from the roots.

Can you post a picture maybe? I'm imagining like a birds nest of hair (LOL) when I read messy updo.

Like a topknot or French Braid, with face-framing curled tendrils. Not too difficult, actually. Don't know how much hair you are working with, though.

maybe some small clip in platinum blonde hair pieces that you can intersperse with your hair to make it look like you were doing dark hair in some areas on purpose?

I have naturally light brown hair and when I had my hair platinum, I would sprinkle just a little bit of baby powder on my roots to lighten them up. It really works! It could delay a trip to the salon about a week or two. It also helps absorb the grease so you can skip a hair wash or two.

^ Yeah usually a thick Alice band will look good and cover the roots.

You could also tie a scarf around your head, which looks pretty.

kinda old and outdated now I think, but zigzag parts always worked for me. Made my roots look waaaay less obvious.

this might not help you right now since you don't want to go to a salon, but for color with less frequent upkeep, try baliage highlights.

My stylist did this the last time I was complaining about how much I hated having obvious roots and having to spend a fortune touching them up every month...he painted them in free-hand really thickly all over, so it looked like the lighter colors of the highlights was all-over color, but at the same time there were still little glimpses of my natural color, and the roots looked natural for up to 3 months b/c they just blended into the rest. I don't know how he did it, but it didn't really even look artificially colored--it just looked like my hair was naturally lighter. I'd post pics b/c this is hard to describe, but my hard drive crashed and now I have no pics.

Anyway...next time you do go to a salon, maybe ask about getting baliage highlights, or another style of color that won't need to be touched up so often?

This works pretty well for me,but the lightest blonde is probably not light enough for you.
But I thought it worth a mention. It only takes a few min,; and is not permanent; so maybe it would be ok? I dunno.

Bump-time! I've been doing the zig zag part... works well but now I kinda wanna wrap my hair up to hide my roots even more. Anyone know a good website that features directions on how to wrap up your hair and look like an awesome hippie or something....

I'm not quite going for the Bret Michaels look. More the sexy Bohemian girl look.

Thoughts? Tips? Advice on where I can find an awesome head wrap/scarf on the cheap?

Get some lowlights closer to the shade of your natural color. I do this for ladies all the time with your situation. It breaks up the color variation so your look is more natural.

that's what i do, except i used face powder- it'll make any of the parts look better becaus eit gives the illusion of lighter rots and also works as a root lifter
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

Wow... I can't believe it... seriously? How much should I use? How long does the effect last? What's the best powder to use. I would have to buy some unless bare minerals works for that kind of thing. Should I spray my hair to make it stick?

^i don't spray my hair to make it stick, it works regardless of whether you have hair products on your hair. i use a blush brush or a powder puff and just use my regular face powder. my theory for its root lifting ability is that it absorbs any oils in your hair/scalp. i have not tried using my mineral powder for this purpose yet.
