    Default painkiller question

Ok..so if I have to ask my Dr for stronger painkillers before my surgery what would you all recommend? He'll pretty much give me whatever I ask for.

Percs make me nauscious, tramadol did absolutely nothing...I'm on vicoprofen now and it helps me,but I think it only comes in one strength(7.5mgs),which is what I have.

Has anyone taken reg. Vicodin and Vicoprofen? What was the difference you saw?

If the Dr. will give you anything that you want you might ask for oxycontin.

Most Drs. are leery and it's gotten a bad reputation (somewhat undeserved) but it is an effective medication.

The active ingredient is oxycodone. It will be similar to Percodans, but smoother, so perhaps no nausea. And it's time release which is good for post op. pain management.

After shoulder surgery, I was basically given unlimited vicodins. They were all right, but I basically had to take them continually and I don't think they are very good for your liver in very large amounts.

The Dr. then gave me a small amount of oxycontins and they lasted for weeks and were much better for reducing pain and for how they felt.

I think the Percs I had(they were generic) said oxycodone and they made me sick..so I'm leery of that.

I like codeine but I have very limited pharmaceutical experience. plus as you ween yourself off there's tylenol with codeine which is a nice middle ground.

Wow, I'm surprised tramadol did nothing for you. i'd have suggested oxycontin too but if you are leary of percs I'd for sure avoid them, its just the time release version of oxycodone(percs) I believe. I'm not sure what else that leaves lol. I used codeine when I was in moderate pain following implants in my jaw and a bone graft so I'm not sure its strong enough.

I've never tried hydromorphone (palladone, dilaudid) but I've heard its quite strong. It comes in suppository form too

also.. what was the dosage of the percs that made you sick? i took a 10mg once and was so sick. but when i took a 5mg i was fine.

Yeah..tramadol was like tic tacs. I have an insanely high tolerance, plus things dont absorb the way they should because of my pancreatitis.

I'm not sure what mgs the Percs were....I"ve never had demerol. I thought that was just an injectable..it comes in pill form?

I did. For me vicodin is more effective mixed with ibuprofen rather than tylenol but that's true sans the vicodin too - tylenol just doesn't do much for me. (I think "normal" vicodin is has tylenol in it) If tylenol works for you normally then I wouldn't count my experience very much.

Vicodin made me run my mouth in a NSFW way. It didn't help nearly as much as the percs, but I have a strong stomach for nausea.

Actually that Alleve stuff did wonders for my last headache but it's probably not strong enough. I was just surprised, a lot of men don't use it - I guess it got marketed as largely for menstrual symptoms. But *day-um* it zonked my headache.

Demerol FTW. Fuck yeah! I also like percocet, but they do make you nauseous because of the acetomenaphin. Fuck it, just ask for morphine!

I got the version of perc that was mixed with ibuprofen instead of acetomenaphin and that really rocked. Is ibuprofen easier on the stomach than tylenol?

Yes. Percodan have aspirin, percocet have aceto, and the Oxycontin have ibuprofin. Hence the widespread abuse, as the latter two can make the stomach so upset that it isn't worth the "high."

FTR, I'm not, and have never been interested in abusing painkillers. My bro used to sell them and unfortunately educated me on the topic.

My mom has chronic neck pain and takes Hydromorphone. And Tizanadine. I believe those are Zanaflex (muscle relaxer) and Dilauded. Those seem to work decently for her. Demerol, at least in my family, only seems to work in injection form. Pill form is weak sauce

Oh it didn't come off that way to me, and along the same lines by "rocked" I meant "made the unbelievable pain in my face become bearable"...

Forget Oxycontin, it's timed release Rercodan and can be deadly if misused which it often is. Vicoprofen is Vicoden plus Ibuprofen and works pretty well. I would ask your doctor about long acting regional anesthesia better known as a pain pump. They are made by ONQ and Stryker and can be site specific (in otherwords, it delivers local anesthesia to the surgical sites over several days)

Any decent surgeon can get them or put them in, and if not, your anesthesiologist should be able to

Pain pumps are good stuff.....just be sure to watch the site....they can leak and pull loose occasionally. Other than that though, they're the way to go in my opinion when you've got an extremely high tolerance to opiod painkillers and you're about to have a procedure after which you're going to be a-hurtin'.
P.S. : ask for an anti-emetic , that way you'll have made a pre-emptive strike against any potential barfy-ness. Some morphine derivatives make people sicker than others, despite being in the same family....and even though the pain pump is site specific.....the medication will still make it's way throughout your body.....it's not exactly a nerve block....it's just a heck of a lot better than dragging around an IV pole. Muscle relaxants will probably make life a little easier as well.....good luck with your surgery!

Dilaudid, you won't care what's happening, and the pain will be obliterated. I was given that for kidney stones. Those are painful little things. I didn't feel it afterwards. No longer on anything thank heavens.

One last thought.....if you haven't tried fentanyl....it might be worth a go. It's different than other narcotics, it's pretty powerful too. It's given in patch form only; which can be a problem for some people (I for one can't use anything that's a patch, for some reason my skin soaks up anything from a patch far too quickly)...it's dangerous only if you put more than one patch on by mistake (which can and does happen, as it makes the mind pretty fuzzy, but I assume your hubby will be with you for much of you recovery, and if you're alone, just write down when you switch patches). I don't know if it might work for you, but just another option in the myriad of painkillers floating out there. I hope you and your Dr. can find something that works for you!
