    Default Vegetarian Desserts?

I've been getting a lot of info for regular meals from all of the vegetarian threads, but I can't seem to find much info on vegetarian desserts.

I love pastries, ice cream, chocolate....all things that require milk! Am I going to have to start baking all my own cakes and making all my own frosting with soymilk? Whatever I do, it's probably going to take a lot of effort isn't it?

I think you mean vegan desserts.

all health food stores will have vegan ice cream and a lot of other treats. If you're not too far from nyc- you could make a trip every once in a while to a store like this:

you can make anything that isn't vegan, vegan. it's super easy.

you can get recipes online at theppk.com, or get a recipe book like "the garden of vegan" or "la dolce vita" by sarah kramer, I think isa chandra moskowitz just came out with a vegan cupcake recipe book too.

pretty much.. these are the substitutions:

eggs- applesauce, a banana, ener-G egg replacer, soymilk mixed with ACV
milk- soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, hemp milk
butter- earth balance spread, any other olive oil based spread

And then of course you have to check that the ingredients are also vegan, like sugar- getting unrefined organic sugar, or just using agave nectar or brown sugar as a replacement to avoid possibly using sugar refined with bone char.

^^^ I like the flavor of a lot of soy icecreams but it definately lacks the creamy texture of tradition ice cream. You could also eat sorbet, that's delicious...

IMO, soy ice cream is disgusting. So is rice milk ice cream. And it's weird because I LOVE soy and rice milk. You can buy vegan cookies/cakes at Whole Foods if you have one near you. They're delicious.

I like Soy Delicious brand soy ice cream, particularly the stuff that comes in mock Cherry Garcia flavor in the little pints, and cookies & cream flavor, etc. Other brands are not as interesting.

I love soy ice cream, Tofutti is great! I've tried dairy-free cheesecake made from tofu, I think it's way better than the regular kind. I love soy and would eat anything made from it.

Oh, yeah, Tofutti, especially the ice cream sandwiches.

Haven't tried the coconut one, but we've made homemade sorbets from coconut milk and that's killer!

These desserts sound absolutely delicious, even though I'm not a vegetarian, vegan, whatever.

I get a great ice cream substitute made with nuts. It's called NutCreemz. It doesn't have any refined sugars either and is sweetened with agave nectar. I can't find a link to the product though.

I like to announce to everyone that I love NutCreem too, but that's just a side benefit.

heh as I was clicking the thread I kept asking myself, "What kind of dessert ISN'T vegetarian? " lulz

It wouldn't be so tasty as some of the great recommendations, but maybe a little fruit salad with succulent berries, powdered sugar, and honey drizzled on top would hit the spot.

YES! The premium Soy Delicious flavors in the little pints are every bit as good as ice cream taste AND texture wise. They are amazing.

But there is really no dessert you can't have. We make cakes, pies, cookies, pudding (most jello pudding is vegan), cheesecake (tofutti cream cheese in the blue tub is AMAZING)...anything you can think of.

Didn't know you were a vegan, Dottie!

We're not, but one of my partners is allergic to milk protein, so we end up eating/inventing a lot of vegan desserts.

I'm vegetarian, my other partner can't have anything with a high level of sugar, due to a fairly alarming kind of hypoglycemia, and one of our friends is allergic to wheat. So we joke that we could make a bacon ice cream cake, and have something NO ONE could eat.

Here's a gppd place for vegan recipes... If you search on the internet, there are a ton of recipe sites and especially blogs with vegan recipes in them.

Rice, soy, and almond milks work just fine when baking. You can use margarine instead of butter, and applesauce or vegan egg replacer instead of eggs. I don't like vegan ice cream, but Italian ices and sorbets would do you fine.
