Default Bubonic plague flu strikes Key West

Ironically enough, just as I started reading A Distant Mirror, the Calamitous 14th Century--which of course goes into great detail about the Black Death, I got struck down by the most vile pestilence I have suffered from in quite some time.

Everyone at my club except the manager has either had it, is getting it, or is getting it again. I'm usually good at avoiding shit like this anyway, but I got it from my mike I let the other DJ use. And this is a nasty form of flu--no buboes, but with a really high fever that makes you literally delirious. Plus a nasty, persistent cough from deep in the lungs. How I managed to get through the nights I had to work with it when it was really bad, I don't know.

So is this a Florida thing, or is it going around the country?

If you're delirious, you need to go to the hospital! A fever that high can cause brain damage...

Wow, I'm glad I'm in China, and here I've been worried about the extra-virulent bugs that go around here (a lot of virii are born over here because people live in close quarters with chickens, and the bird virii mutate & jump ship.)

^my fever is down now, i dont know how high it was since i dont have a thermometer, but it was pretty bad for awhile. i've already gone through the sore throat/dizziness/achiness part of the flu, and now it is 5am and i am sitting on my bathroom floor because i feel like i'm going to throw up... which is a major problem because i am extremely emetophobic, the only thing keeping me relaxed is distracting myself with SW and drinking cold water with baking soda. ugh.

I just replied to your thread in BB about that. Try the Vernors, if that doesn't work, nothing will.

It's too late, my brain is damaged, lol. I hate hospitals, I had to work unless I was dying or maybe really got buboes, and it wasn't quite that bad I guess. But yeah I felt weak & delirious and could feel the heat pouring out of my head. Fortunately the dancers are pretty cool in this club for the most part, and helped me out. One of them was really amazed at the heat, though, which is why I think the fever was high.

On a more positive note--how cool is it that you are in China, Chaos!! That's great! Start a thread--details, please!

Be careful. This seasons flu is extremely vicious. The high fever that accompanies it has killed more healthy people than most recent strains of influenza. I just saw a warning about it with an article about a 10yr old girl who died while in the hospital because they couldn't control her fever.

Wow. The poor girl! It can be dangerous, yeah. I actually wondered at one point if it got worse I should maybe go to somebody, I did not want to feel any weaker than that.

I know the big flu epidemic of 1918 (I think it was that year, I am starting to get sleepy and am still a bit dumb from the brain damage, lol) killed more Americans by far than WWI did.

But we mustn't scare Gypsy--I suspect in your case if you were bad enough to warrant seeing a doctor you wouldn't be reading SW, like I didn't even turn on my computer for 2 1/2 days, or unpack it from work. Not to knock your disease, lol.

I've still got the cough, seven days later, but the fever (I never measured it) wasn't that high, according to the 9 ft tall pink bunny who showed up one night to sit at the edge of my bed and talk to me.

Speaking of the big flu epidemic of 1918, a great small book to read is Flu. We'd all know more about the 1918 pandemic if it weren't for that other coincident historical event, WWI, and the fact that most of the deaths occurred in the developing world. Estimates vary, but researchers now believe it may have killed 50-100 million people worldwide (this updates older estimates of 40-60 million worldwide). And another oddity: It killed young adults moreso than the old, sick and young--the usual victims of a flu epidemic.

It'll be long gone from me by then, I bounce back pretty fast. I don't know if the foul affliction has spread to the club you'll be working in or not, I've been too busy busting my ass and being wretchedly ill. But I'm going there tonight or tomorrow, so I can let you know what to expect.

CE, that death toll estimate isn't surprising, I thought my fever-damaged brain held some similarly vast amount somewhere in there--which would actually put it at a higher toll than all of the fatalities for all nationalities in WWI. Didn't know about the young adults being especially vulnerable to it, though.

You can have a high fever without it reaching crisis levels. If it went down pretty quickly, you're probably all right. I just meant get thee to a hospital if it's still going on, you know?

I've checked Google News... more people in the US are dying from the flu than usual. Not a huge amount, but a few children and older people, in multiple states. Stay safe out there... drink lots of fluids, take tylenol!

I'm finally getting over the flu myself. It's been a little over two weeks with the cough.

Speaking of flus and China, I was in Shanghai during the SARS outbreak. Those were interesting times.

it's all over the country. i was just reading about it a couple weeks ago. the cdc says this flu has had fatalities over the "epidemic threshold" AND it's been over the threshold for weeks in a row.

meaning enough people have died from this flu for it to officially be an epidemic, and that hasn't happened in the US for at least hundreds of years.

mark my words people, this country will see a pandemic in our times. maybe not this year, maybe not next year, but it will happen. we are headed toward a plague of massive proportions.

people pretend like that can't happen. like it only happened in "old days". well i have news for you, it's ALWAYS happened and it tends to get worse the more populated an area gets. if you think new diseases don't "pop up" in recent times, what about AIDS? aids was only officially discovered 30 or so years ago. think of all the people who were infected before we even knew what was going on.

and speaking of super terrible flu-like plagues, isn't that basically what SARS is?

just because it wasn't -here- doesn't mean it can't/won't be.

Just start now, bring cough meds and if you can get a pre-emptive script for antibiotics you will be perfect! We're only there for a few days so by the time it hits us we'll be out.

It did its dirty rounds here in the ATL...I'm now trying to teach my dog how to make soup after realizing how vulnerable I was to that shite. I've had the $50 flu many a time...this stuff was a whole new beast. Be warned it jumps back on ya when you think its gone...took weeks for me to get fully over.

I think you are right, Pretty_Penny. This probably has more to do with our ever increasing problem of poor sanitation, than just the bugs themselves. We've got more homeless people in our country now than we've had since the Great Depression. No running water to clean up with can lead to the faster spread of these germs.

I hope everyone is feeling better. I had a nasty flu in 2001, and I swear I felt like I was knocking at deaths door. I stayed in bed for a week, only getting up to use the bathroom. I was pretty sick for over a month.

The flu seems to even be in Canada. I've got it, not nearly as bad as it could be, and a few of my friends just got over pretty bad bouts of it. It hit me yesterday and I started taking oil of oregano, probiotics, garlic, and a ton of other stuff in hopes to shorten it. Guess it's just got to run its course, isn't that what they say with the flu? I'm just hoping to speed up the process by flushing my system with fluids. Is it feed a cold, starve a flu? Or the other way around?

Haha! Yeah the book was just getting into that movement--pretty crazy stuff. The Pope finally had to put them down when they started usurping the power of the Church. People are strange...

It takes a lot more than that to scare me, lol. I still owe you an e-mail, I just have to go find yours to answer it properly--sorry about that, I did get behind on a lot of things.

Jesus, I'm still coughing as I type this, lol.

The diseases are nature's way of cutting back on overpopulation, I'm sure, so I think we can expect some more nasy surprises. But the Flu epidemic of 1918 would have to count as a pretty serious one, within the last few hundred years.

That, and another big sanitation issue is the use of hand sanitizer instead of soap and water in hospitals -- it leads to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was creating stronger viruses as well. One of the articles I pulled up was about how the Australian flu season is expected to involve a Tamiflu-resistent bug...
