Default What bank do you use and why?

I got a letter in the mail from my bank telling me that they're closing my account because I exceeded my online transactions 4 times in a year. You're only allowed to go online and transfer money between your accounts 3 times a month, and I exceeded it 4 times in a year. It seems like a really stupid thing to charge you money for (10 dollars each time) so I don't want to bank with them anyways. I do want to have a checking account and savings account though, so I need to go through a new bank.

The bank i was using was Washington mutual. I want a bank with UNLIMITED ONLINE BANKING TRANSFERS and no stupid fees. I don't want bank of america. It has to be a bank available in Oregon.

I was thinking of using Key Bank or Wells Fargo, or maybe a credit union.

What is the difference between a credit union and a bank? I'm dumb about banks, tell me please.

So... what bank do you use and why?

and what is a credit union?

The limit on transfers from savings accounts I believe has to do with federal rules and is not because your bank is being mean.

Credit unions, well at least in the US, and other people may have a much better definition, don't pay the same taxes as banks and are organized differently. They use to limit membership by working for a specific company or other criteria, but they tend to try to have as broad a criteria as possible. In some cases they give much better rates on loans and interest on accounts. I got a far cheaper car loan from an account in a credit union than I could find anywhere else. I was eligible for the account because they allowed all family members of workers of a specific company to have an account.

I have a checking account at washington mutual because it was free.

Online banks don't have physical locations and you may have to do some of your transactions by mail but they give the highest interest on your checking account that I know of.

Everbank ... because they have foreign currency accounts and CD's available

a local credit union ... because they are more or less immune from the sort of potential liquidity problems that could hit a Countrywide / WaMu / Citibank due to their 'off balance sheet' losses.

I'm with WaMu and I've never been charged for transfers, or told I had to limit them. That's silly! I get free checking and I had a savings account with a little interest, but I closed the savings account because I get more interest with ING.

    I really like WaMu.

I have wells fargo and am almost daily transfering money around between our accounts. I pay $12 for the account monthly BUT if you set up checking and savings and do an auto transfer from check to savings every month for a min of $25 the accounts are free. I love them. Their online banking is great. I had BofA and hated them, USBank sucked too.

Maybe you need to change the checking account you have. Is it a student account or some other odd account. Maybe ask them to change your account to one with unlimited transfers. Id change the account before changing the bank. Just go speak with a banker.

^^^ I hate hate hate Wells Fargo.

When I lived out west, I used to go to Von's (a grocery store) after work and deposit my money in the ATM. I did this EVERY day I worked.

One day, I got a refund check from my car insurance in the mail, and deposited it along with my money from work. So here I am depositing about 200 bucks (yes sometimes I suck lol) and a check for 100 bucks. I forgot to put the check in the deposit slip because I am an airhead and had been at work all night and to tell the truth had a couple cocktails. I did not forget the cash however.

Two days later, the fraud department calls me to inform me that my check which I had written down was not in the envelope and they would be closing my account!!! What the fuck??? At the time I think I had like 3 or 4 k in my checking....like I was trying to fuck them out of 100 bucks? I told them accidents happen, that I didn't know where the check was but could get another from my insurance agent.

No dice. Account closed. It really made me mad!! To be accused of basically trying to steal 100 dollars?? Please!!

My primary bank is Wells Fargo, and I've hardly had problems with them. If anything they've been extra helpful. When I had a run-in with a malicious stripper in Vegas they were quick to close my accounts and get new ones set up right away. Also (even though it's sometimes a hassle) I don't mind when they call my "home" number in CA to check on activity on my credit card, cuz it means they're paying attention and not just accepting transactions willy-nilly.

(The reason I started with Wells Fargo back in '91 was because my original bank got bought out by someone else, and WF had the closest branches both to my home in NoCal and my school in SoCal.)

Also with Wells Fargo - I had a bunch of pending charges that made 5 purchases overdraw my account - $34 for each of them. I went in and they took them all off. Never had a problem with them. And did I mention their online banking and billpay is awesome! I do all my banking through their billpay and have never had a problem.

I've done most of my banking for the past decade with a local credit union. They're not open on Saturday and they close kinda early in the beginning of the week (4 or 4:30) but they NEVER give me any grief or headache with bullshit fees. They have branches scattered throughout the state but that doesn't really matter since I do most everything online anyhow. Why would a bank limit the number of online transfers you can do? That just sounds unbelievably LAME.

^ I dont know but it's definitely lame. for each one I went over the limit (only allowed 3 a month) they charged me 10 dollars too. So... the day before my bank closes my account I'm going shopping and charging it CREDIT, so by the time it goes through, I'll already have my new dress, and the bank will be screwed. and what can they do about it?? nothing.. they won't have my new address or information and i'm living off the grid for the most part anyways. UGH. i'm just so pissed, I was going through my bank statements and they have charged me over 200 in fees from using online banking too much?!?! wtf. Sometimes I HAVE to use online banking because I travel and i'm not near a bank... so I'm going to get my money back in a creative way.

fuck wells fargo. I occasionally have daydreams of...... well I probably shouldn't say on the internet!

Wells Fargo has a computer system set up that rearranges your overdrafts to get the maximum amount possible out of you in the form of overdraft fees. Aka, if you had a 5 dollar charge, then 3 hours later a 20 dollar charge, then the next day a 500 charge that put you negative, they will rearrange it 500, 20, 5 so that you get 3 overdraft charges instead of 1. I actually have had a branch manager confirm this to me, and their response was "well you wouldn't want something important like your mortgage payment to bounce, would you? So we put the most expensive one first." Bullshit. Liars. Cunts.

ANYway the point is that a bank is a business, and you are a customer, and they are making their money off of YOU, in the form of fees. If your teller or whoever gets a call when they are speaking with you, they will say to the person on the other end of the line, "I'm sorry, I'm with a customer right now."

A credit union, for the most part, is a union, not a business. They make their money from charging interest to lend money, which comes indirectly from your money. Any extra money they make get distributed back to you, the member, in the form of dividends. If your teller or whoever gets a call when speaking with you, they will say "I'm sorry, I'm with a member right now."

The credit union I'm with has extraordinarily better interest rates for car loans, mortgages, and credit cards, and better rates of return for investments, than any big bank in town. They will work with me to accomplish what I want with the least amount spent by me. I will never go to a bank again.

^ yeah. screw banks. btw... will my buying a dress the day before my account closes with a small balance in my checking account still left so it still goes through and charging it credit work?? I know its worked before when I've had not enough money in my checking account, it didn't even show up until three days later and i had time to transfer money from my savings to my checking. it's just my little revenge plan, the owe me anyways- and this is the only way to get it back.

Yea, it'll work but then they'll put that money you owe into collections and you'll have a bigger mess on your hands. I wouldnt advise it. I had a BofA OD from them closing my account and 8 years later and after it went through my Ch7 its still showing up on my credit report through a different collection company. Its a mess.

don't do that. they will report you to equifax and verisign and you won't be able to open a new account anywhere til you pay them.

I use a credit union, like austinatalie. I don't pay any fees, have never been charged any sort of "transfer" fee and I do all of my banking online!
Back to your transfers question- there is a limit by law on the number of transfers you can make from a savings account monthly, is it possible your account at your bank is a savings account and not a checking account?

Technically they're not allowed to do that...the SOL for derogatory marks on your credit report is 7 yrs from the date of the first delinquency. I understand that a lot of shady collections agencies will try to pull a "fast one" by selling the account to another collections agency right before the 7yr mark is up, so that the clock resets. This is illegal but happens anyway...most collections agencies have little regard for consumer laws and if they're caught, will feign ignorance and act as if it was just an honest mistake on their part(bullshit). If you dispute this with the credit bureaus, citing the reason as being that it is an aged account from >7 yrs ago, they should be able to remove it from your report.

I have bank of America.....I haven't really had a problem with them (been with them for a year)... I do a lot of transfers for free online each month from savings to primary checking & so forth. I really like their online banking..... though their customer service #'s suck. They have you on hold forever, and they usually don't know so they have to transfer you to someone who does. So, I guess that's the only problem.

I like Wells Fargo the best. Like AudreyLeigh said, their online banking is really easy. I can't remember if they have a limit on the number of transfers you can make each month, but I think I usually make about five each month.
