Sad WTF?? Please help me identify this 'mystery fish'

Ummm, recently I've been craving trout (the last and only times I've had it were in Germany and Austria maybe 5 years ago?) so I decided to go to the supermarket to get some.

I looked behind the glass where all of the fishes are kept and looked for trout. I saw a selection of whole rainbow trout, but not knowing how to gut them I went for the 'steelhead trout fillets.' I thought it was funny how much the fillets resembled salmon fillets, especially when I think I remember trout as being white and not pink. But I figured; hey, I don't have the best memory, and maybe it'll turn white when it cooks....? I also noted how the fillets looked huge compared to the size of an entire rainbow trout body. Boy can I notice a red flag.....

I go home and broil it, and it looks just like salmon. And guess what, it tastes just like salmon. Was it a mistake or did I just get the wrong kind of trout?! See for yourselves:

Well I can't be sure but it looks like salmon to me. I've eaten trout and it has quite a distinctive taste, not like salmon, I've never heard of steelhead trout tho so maybe thats different. Nice nails btw!

That is definitely steelhead trout. I cook it often, yes it is like salmon but slightly leaner and less fishy, I actually prefer it over salmon. It's probably my favorite fish, possibly after raw mackerel.

Now I wish I had some in the freezer to cook. Time to double check that I don't!

God damn it. Now I'm gonna have to learn to gut rainbow trout I guess since they don't sell them filleted locally.

First, I try to dye my hair lighter for a change and it looks exactly the same. Then, I try to dye my hair darker and it looks exactly the same. Now, I'm trying to branch out and eat other fish aside from salmon, and I end up with something that looks and tastes just like salmon! Is this some kind of joke?!

The shoprite in my neck of jersey usually has filleted rainbow trout. Also you can usually ask them to gut and clean it if they don't.

Personally I'd just stick with the steelhead, yum!

Really? They'll fillet it for me? I am going back tomorrow if it's the last thing I do.

Also, in the Shop Rite complex we also have a Path Mark and an Acme...if Plan A fails maybe they have filleted rainbow trout or will be willing to gut for me. But just watch, there's gonna be some sort of cosmically engineered 'accident' where a fillet of salmon is going to land where the guy was gonna wrap my trout up, and I'll wind up with salmon again....

We used to have an Ocean Fresh, which was wonderful. The only place that always had mussels. Then it shut down and moved down the street. Then it shut down and moved down the street in the other direction. Now it's just shut down. I'll find something.

Fuck this. I'm gonna go make some squirrel kabobs.

Trout and Salmon are esentially the same.

Steelhead are the migrating version of rainbow trout. Rainbow trout are landlocked and don't migrate out of fresh water. Steelhead migrate from the ocean into freshwater to spawn, and then can swim back out to the ocean again if they wish. Since steelhead do not die after spawning they are not an "official" Pacific Salmon. Otherwise they're pretty much the same.

They're all members of the Salmonidae family.

Oh snap! Sirona laid down the law!

That was interesting, thanks! Steelhead and Rainbow definitely taste differently though and have texture differences.

I'll take rainbow trout (assuming that's the kind I used to have) over salmon any day. It was sooooo good.

Was it less orange/pink and more pale/white?

Weird! I've never heard of this mystery fish before and that sure looks like salmon to me in the pics. I hate salmon so I probably wouldn't like this fish. Thanks for the warning so I know not to order it in the future!

Steelhead are just big rainbow trout that migrate and live their adult lives in the sea, like salmon. The red flesh comes from eating krill and shrimp. landlocked rainbow trout have a pale, milder flesh.

Fuck. So I can't just go and get rainbow trout, I gotta narrow it down by diet. Thank goodness I'm on a grilled-cheese jag right now.
