1 cent fares?

^that's what I'm thinking...1 cent???? *runs over to spirit air*

Dude! I belong to their discount club. I signed up last year so I fly for cheap but never THIS cheap! My flight down is a penny and my flight back is $109. I've wanted to go there ever since I was a kid dreaming of embezzling millions and running off into the sunset! I know--I know, too much Miami Vice. Anyway, I'm enlisting two buddies to come with and if it's as incredible as I expect I'm goin every YEAR! Apparently they have volcanoes and a rain forest and perfectly clear beach water.

I just signed up. Thanks for the tip!!!

It is gorgeous... Make sure you check do one of the Zip Lines threw the canopy, SO MUCH FUN! There was also a spa I went to, although the name escaped me... Mosty it's different hot springs fueled by on of the volcano's but they also had massages of all types and the other round of spa stuff... I beleive that was up in the mountains, the beaches are also pretty nice although not as nice as some places...
The only negative I have is really more of a tip, and please don't take this in a bad way... But if your not going to be around guys, especially in the touristy places or the big cities BE CAREFUL about wearing jewelry people are terrible are coming up, ripping it off of women and running like hell, and they take whatever is attached too, so avoid earrings... Otherwise everything is great, I love Costa Rica!

Yikes! Thanks for mention the snatch and go!!I hadn't really planned to go with a guy so I'll avoid going nuts with the jewelry. I saw they have that zip line foolishness! I can see myself flying down a zip line screaming all the way!!!
What did you think of the restaurants?

The zip line is amazing, nothing like it in the world that I've done... I think maybe they have the longest ones in the world. Yeah the big deal with the snatch thing is earings, it'd suck to have those ripped out. Other than that it's a pretty safe country, mostly jsut petty theft... Everybody has guns.
Funny you made this thread because I was just pricing Costa Rica fares... weird. Just signed up for Spirit Air. They have really good fares but hopefully theyll have 1 cent fares in the fall!

I"m a little confused here. Optimist, do you pay the $39.95 annual fee to get fares like that? Or did you just sign up for email alerts? What exactly does the annual fee entitle one to?

jester, is the theft problem only in the cities? We're going to a private secluded beach not a well traveled area.
Audrey, check their emails every week because there's something good every Tuesday or Wednesday.
LSM I pay the 30 bucks to get the juciest but they have discounts you can use even if you don't sign up. It's worth it for me because I a big wanderer. I fly three times a year (not to mention all the car trips, lol).
Another site I love love love is Bookit.com! They are incredible. Cheap as hell! I booked a trip with them last year and had to cancel the day before and they let me! They didn't charge me anything! They were nice to me and followed up.

I spent a month near Playa Tambor (2002)...it was pretty f'ing great. Best beach I've ever been on...water is like a bathtub, clean, clear, and no other people around! There's a pretty nice national park/reserve nearby too, Cabo Blanco. Oh, and a hippie tourist town, Montezuma. I totally recommend that area!

OMG that's exactly where I want to go!!!!!! This spot called Barcelo Tambor! It looks mindblowing! How do you get to the hippie town? Is there cab service out there? We were going to take a little shuttle flight to get out there. I know there is a ferry too but it takes four hours and one of my friends doesn't trust the boats in a place "like Costa Rica". LOL

I spend alot of time down in Costa Rica. For the hot spots you definately want to hit the volcano Jester mentioned. It's called Arenal Volcano and the resort is Tabacon. You can take a one day tour there from the city for about $80. It's about 4.5 hrs. each way in a bus. It a scenic ride and if your not in hurry it's very nice. If you're in a hurry you can fly there on Nature Air for about $50 each way and it will take 15 minutes.
Other hot spots in the city are:
Le Monastarie Restaurant in Escazu
Lucas restuarant in El Pueblo
For Casino, the Europa Casino in the Radisson is the best.
If you want a good laugh, go to see the legal prostitution involving hot Colombian girls and horny Gringos in the Del Rey Hotel and the Key Largo nightclub across the street.
The city is very dirty and pretty run down. If you want to get to a nicer part head to Escazu and Santa Ana. I would recommend going there for nightlife as well, it a bit more upscale and as a foreigner you'll feel more comfortable.
Out of the city for the beach Guancaste in the north and Jaco and Manuel Antonio in the central pacific are the most popular. You'll probably want to fly to Gaunacaste but Jaco and M.A. are about 1 1/2- 2hrs. by car. You can get a pretty cheap shuttle for like $12 each way, I think it called Inter-Shuttle.
Jaco is a bit of a rundown beach town, so-so beach. Lots of restuarants and quite a few bars. If you want to stay there I recommend Hotel Cocal. If you want an upscale plase the Marriott Los Suenos or Villas Caletas will do you nicely. They are about 5 minutes out of town
Manuel Antonio is about 45 minutes south of Jaco, it has very beautiful beaches and is more tranquil than Jaco. It is a bit quite at night though. I usually stay in Jaco and rent a car there and drive to M.A. to go to the beach during the day.
River rafting with a tour from the city is very cool also.
Sadly, the crime situation is pretty bad. As tourist though pretty much all you have to worry about is theft. The taxis are safe, just make sure the have a meter. If the driver doesn't put it on say "Usa la maria?". If he still doesn't put it on get another cab. If you rent a car don't leave anything valuable in it.
If you're looking for a place to stay in the city I have a small executive apartment that I rent to tourists. It's in a great area near the zoo. Check the website and if you like it and it's available you can have it at half price.
