Default My cat has a giant scab for no apparent reason

Pogo has this huge scab on his side, and it seems to be growing in size. I first noticed it about 4 or 5 days ago, and it was the size of a quarter. Today it is about the size of half of paper dollar or something. It doesn't seem to be hurting him though. It's obviously not from him and the other cat fighting, but maybe it's a bacterial infection of some kind? He just had a dental cleaning about two weeks ago. Could he have picked up something from the vet's office? Can cats get MRSA?!!

I think I am going to bring him in for a visit tomorrow but I wanted to see if anyone has experienced this weird cat scab phenomenon too.

Ringworm maybe? It can look scabby on cats. Whatever it is, wash your hands, take him to a vet.

That could be. Peanut had a little tiny spot of fungus on her head that we've been treating. It's just a really thick, hard scab that doesn't seem like normal ringworm. Maybe it's more scary because he's been licking it. Believe me, I can't stop washing my hands. I don't want him sleeping in our bed either.

^^Yep, I'm no expert, but that sounds a lot like kitty ringworm to me. It's not deadly, it's just a pain in the ass if you get it yourself. The vet would know, and a fungal cream does the trick.

There was an outbreak for the cats that lived at the vet clinic I used to work at, and so many of us got it. Then I got it again this year from my cat, who likes to dig in the garden. I caught it fast, and it was gone real quick. It's good you're observant!

Keep the baby away from touching the cat too, although Im sure you are.
I had ring worm once. ugh. But any OTC fungal cream will clear it up.

I had ringworm once too! Maybe 10 years ago. It was awful. It spread all over my body and I had to take oral antifungal meds and this gel that made the rest of my skin really dry. I. Hate. Ringworm.
How the hell did he get it? How did Kembra get it? When I took her to the pediatrician they were shocked that she had it at all. The cat doesn't go outside ever.

I'm sure you'll be going to the vet, (lol, watching csi and they just said "vault" and I typed "vault" instead of vet) but if you need something to help until then, grab some cold-pressed virgin coconut oil. it's an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral with a lot of topical applications.

So I took him to a completely different vet than the previous one that I took him to when he had his dental cleaning about two weeks ago.
He was tested for fungus and it didn't seem to be the case. There was no real circular pattern and it was a very thick sort of wound.
They shaved and cleaned the area. So get this...

Two doctors confirmed it is a BURN.

They think that the other clinic put a defective heating pad on him during his dental surgery because anesthesia can often make animals cold. They think the heating pad burnt his skin!
So when I thought the affected area was spreading, I actually didn't see it all the first time.
He's on antibiotics. Poor little guy!!

I don't know how to go about handling the situation with the other place, but I want to at least warn them so it doesn't happen to other animals in the future. I think they should pay for this visit with the new place too, but I need to think about how to be diplomatic about it. Plus I can't really prove it.

i would definatley call the other vet that might have burned him. FOR SURE. id hate to see that happen to more kitties. and i would get a note from the vet you went to today saying what they think it might have been caused from and ask them to reemburse you for the money you spent treating it. that's not cool at all. awww poor kitty, im glad you were responsible enough to take care of it, most people don't do anything. hope kitty feels better soon!

Oh, man, a burn? Poor Pogo! You should definitely at least let them know.

I am going there tomorrow with a copy of the bill from the other clinic and demanding payment in full. If they don't comply, I will take it to small claims court.
