Thread: Buddy might have cancer.

Thumbs down Buddy might have cancer.

That's Buddy in my avatar. He's been puking even more than usual and generally not feeling well, so we took him to the vet yesterday. This evening they called back with the results on his bloodwork. Apparently his calcium is way high and his white blood cells are elevated. The vet said the high calcium would indicate kidney problems, but there didn't seem to be any other kidney problems. She wants to see him again in a few weeks and do another blood test, and if the calcium is still high then she said she'd start looking for cancer.

We can't afford X-rays and ultrasounds and chemo and all that for a 16-18 year old cat. If he has cancer, then all we can do is make him as comfortable and happy as we can for as long as possible. We've been giving him Pepcid AC for his tummy trouble and he seems to be feeling better, so that's a good thing. I'm just so worried and upset that he might have cancer. I love this cat. Is cancer going to take everybody I love away from me?

Fuck cancer. In the ass. I really, really hate it.

hmm, that really sucks. I'm sorry.

I've heard a lot of people talk about cottage cheese and flax seed oil for pets with cancer (mostly dogs though):

there's something really interesting called a watercure, if there's tumors:

here's a thread that talks about a cat with cancer and others' recommendations:

I would encourage you to research vitamin C because domestic animals only create like a quarter of what their wild counterparts create, which is obviously detrimental during sickness:

I'd also suggest looking into a raw food diet or changing the cats diet out to something that actually meets its needs (I don't know what you feed him, but most dog/cat food is actually bad for them.)
there's a really good blog on it but I can't find it right now.

    keep us posted!

I was googling elevated calcium in cats and found these two sites:

Wow, that's your cat? I thought it was some 'famous-cat' picture, because the pose is so exactly like that famous Einstein pic. Cutey.

I don't think it will be helpful for buddy, but looking into Vitamin B-17 is interesting, and holds the possiblity of being empowering. I haven't made my decision on it yet, but

Having lost cats to cancer in the past, as well as other reasons, I have only my empathy to offer you, Yekhefah. That is very sad.

I'm sure, though, that Buddy is better off having you and K taking care of him than it might have been otherwise. He is loved.

I'm really sorry to hear about Buddy. I worked in the vet field for awhile and it was always the hardest thing to see owners go through. I think you're doing things right. If it IS cancer, which there are so many other things it could be, then just keeping him happy and comfy is the best thing an owner can do. Putting him through all the chemo and such is not feesible considering his age.
I wish you and Buddy the best. Give him a big hug from all of us on SW.

Oh no Yek! That so very much sucks. That happened to one of my cats too. Poor you and K and poor Buddy. But I know he's had a hell of a life, much of it happily wasted in naps and sunbeams, and I know you'll always have warm memories of him. I'll be thinking of you all.

I never noticed the Einstein/Buddy connection. That is awesome.

I've heard that cats stick their tongue out when they're thirsty. But I'm sure Buddy did it because he is just as silly as Einstein was. Cats don't play dice with the universe, either.

I'm sorry honey....at least know if it is cancer, that he had a long and happy life because of you. I"m here if you want to talk..I used to work in the vet field as well,so if you want to discuss tests or treatments you dont understand, I will be happy to.

Oh, man. So sorry to hear that. I think it's worth looking into the information that fancygirl posted. But eventually, loving palliative care may be the way to go.

That is a nice long kitty life, sad as the news is. (I say that NOT to make light of it at all - I'm devastated at the loss of every pet I have.)

Don't jump to conclusions so quickly..you never know he could not have cancer. Of course as a loving pet owner yourself you fear the worst which is understandable since he's been with you a long time. Buddy is a fighter and he'll be just fine as long as you're around.

Thanks, y'all. We'll see in a few weeks. Fancygirl, thanks for all that info! I'm going to read all of it now. He seems to be fine otherwise, and now that we're giving him the Pepcid AC he's stopped puking. His appetite is fine, he drinks a normal amount of water, his bathroom habits are normal; he seems to feel perfectly okay except he was puking so much. He's lost some weight, but he's still a perfectly healthy 14 pounds. He really seems to feel a lot better with the Pepcid. So if he does have cancer, it's still pretty early on.

I never noticed the similarities between his pic and the Einstein pic, LOL! That's so awesome. I'm going to have to make a lolcat out of it. Just for shits and giggles, here's my other favorite Buddy pic...
