    Default kitty harness

i bought a harness for alice so i can take her outside. i have an enclosed courtyard out the front of my apartment but there's a gap under the gate that she could escape through. louis kuitton is amazing and he plays in the courtyard and never goes under the gate, but alice is silly and would disappear, so i got her a harness so her and louis can play outside under my supervision.

it's very funny. she does not like it at all. i only got it yesterday and i've made her wear it around the house for an hour a day to try to get her used to it. i am not a very popular kittenmommy at the moment. she sulks so bad when i put it on her. is that normal? i've never put a harness on a cat before so i'm not sure - do they usually take a while to adjust to it?

Yes. When I first put collars with tags on my kittens so they culd go outside with ID, they HATED those things. Then they got used to them. The same will happen with a harness. Give alice time.

I've heard its normal. I tried to do that with my cat and he never liked it. I also put the leash on the same day and tried to walk him. I was 12ish. Maybe after you put it on her give her a treat for doing a good job.

that's a good idea. i have some kitty yoghurt drops in the cupboard, i shall give her one of those.

she's wearing it right now and all she does is slink along pressed close to the ground and hides in corners. poor little thing. but i know it'll be great for her once she adjusts to it.

Yeah I tried that with my cats once..did NOT go over well. My male would just sulk and cry and my female would go catatonic..just collapse so you had to drag her. She hates it outside anyway..she rarely even ventures out onto the screened in patio and only then when we are out there and shes DESPERATE for attention! She shoots out, gets her pets and shoots back inside!

My male lounges outside all the time and watches the lizards run up and down the screens.

It's totally normal. I put it on my cats when I want them to sit and stay when I'm moving furniture in the house.

Also I'd like to point out that my bird HATED her harness and it took like 4 months but once she realized harness = outside, she fucking LOVED it. Now she behaves very well on it. Not a cat, but same idea.

Yeah, I bought one of those too. What a waste of money! She hated it so much she refused to move at all when it was on.

There is a couple in my neighborhood who walks their cat on a leash. I never thought it could be done, but the cat seems to like it. It will prolly just take some time to adjust.

i figure if i just keep putting it on her every day she'll get used to it.

i'm not sure if i should do it for an hour or something a day, or if i should just leave it on her and not take it off til she gets used to it... but that sounds a bit cruel. i dunno

Yup, my fat orange cat was always wanting to go outside, so I bought a harness and a leash so I could take him. He HATED it, would not walk, only flattened himself to the ground when I put it on. I tried to get him used to it for a couple weeks, thinking if I put on the harness and immediately took him outside he'd get a positive association with the leash. Nope, never worked he always hated it. The most he would do is crawl with his belly dragging on the ground for a few steps.
I think its a kitty instinct to go limp when something grabs the back of thier neck. I doubt many kitties will get over it enough to be walked.

^ It takes more than a few weeks training and also involved putting it on in the home for a few hours and giving them treats.

I used to use one for my cat. She would come everywhere with me when I was at school, like a lap-cat. I started with her very young though, maybe that helped. People would abuse me in the street, saying it was animal cruelty whilst walking their dog's on leashes??? I used it mainly so if she got spooked or something she wouldn't run under a car.
She hates it now, get's the shits if i even show it to her. She occasionally still walks with me though, just around the neighbourhood, especially if I've been away for a while (She lives with my Dad in Australia).
    I miss my kitty :-(

i've leash trained 2 of my cats over the years. I think you're on the right idea with the hour a day. try to associate the harness with good things, like lots of petting, treats, play, whatever. That way your kitty can learn to connect the harness to praise and attention. An hour a day worked for my two. Eventually she will get used to it. Don't worry, you're not being a bad kittenmommy! n_n

My cats hate the harness. They even hate wearing the collars. They just walk around the house shaking their heads like they can get it off somehow. I guess it just takes time to get used to it. Maybe they will realize harness=playtime outside and tolerate it.

i think this is why the cat at the pet store we were trying to get adopted flipped out! They have a rule at the store they should have a harness when being taken out of cage and well if a cat isn't used to a collar or harness things can go bad. Be careful ok.

Maybe this doesn't apply to me since I have a ferret but she learned to love her harness because she knew it meant that she was going to be outside. If your cat likes going outside, she'll probably get used to the fact that wearing a harness comes with it... Or, maybe you could put some chicken wire where the gap is?

aww i took her outside on it today. she was freaked at first but then she calmed down a bit and started chewing on a stick. i had her out there for maybe 15 mins til a loud car went past and scared her and she ran back to the door.

    but it was definitely progress!

She's totally putting the guilt trip on. My cats were just free to go where they wanted. But, I've always lived in the county-subs my whole life.. She'll get used to it.

The grabbing the Cat by the back of the neck is a calming effect. Vet on the TV show that I saw recently used a huge clip like those to hold stacks of papers together to gather up the skin at the back of the neck of the cat to calm the cat down to give it a pill. He stated it reminded the cat of when their mothers would carry them by the back of the necks as kitten. He called it cat hypnosis.

I doubt that a harness gathers the skin at the back of the neck like that clip or a mommy cat does though.

I just think that some cat are contrary and not not like being lead.
