Well, I don't need that many open...but it makes it so convenient!! And I use internet explorer.

It is spyware. I always run adaware and it never keeps my computer from being overtaken by spyware. My computer has bee really slow late last night and all day today and I'm getting a lot of pop-ups and spyware warnings. God damn it. Time to erase everything all over again.

    If it's windows XP:
Close ALL your applications so you're at desktop. Nothing open.
    go to start > run
then click on the processes tab.
At the bottom of the processes tab, you'll see a number telling you how many processes you have running. Can you tell me that number?

Also, tell me the brand of your antivirus/spam

Ok, that's not so bad. So if you're infected you're not doing too bad even if it is masquerading as service hosts.

Here's my suggestion to try to start:

Get combofix and download it to your desktop.
    http://www.techsupportforum.com/sect...s/ComboFix.exe

Run it, choose option 2 when asked, and let it do it's thing. Just stand back. It WILL go through.

When done, if your system hasn't improved you can try it in Safemode which would be better as a #1 option but my history with Combofix and being so involved in it, well I'm partial, but it's just that damn good.

If you still have issues with speed, you're welcome to talk to me in pm or what not to give me some system specific information that will help me help you discover the problem and solution. But try that first!

    Hmm one sec.

    It's a good link.

    You can try:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

You'll see three links above the first image where you can get it.

In order to find how much ram you have on your pc you need to right-click on my computer and click the general tab

to find how many processes are running...press ctrl+alt+delete at the same time and click the process tab

with this information i will be able to tell you if you need to upgrade any parts on it

I'm not territorial or anything...but we totally just covered that. The ram is in the thread, and the processes is like 4 posts up man.

Okay Master, those links worked. I have completed the process. So far, computer's running good, no pop ups. Although.....maybe spyware's got me right where it wants me....

Techguy/Mizzou/ArchibaldLeech I have 504 MB of RAM, 37 processes and I have no idea how big my hard drive is. I don't think it's Ram related though.

This thread reminds me of something my Mentor said once in a brilliant moment of funny talking to someone who called him. All I could hear was one side of the conversation:

    "Hello, This is Thomas"
    "Quick computer questions, aren't"

Throw me one bone. Right after you reboot here, go to start > run > then type in TASKMGR like before

once up click on the performance tab. You'll see some graphs.
Tell me what the number is at the bottom of the first block on the SECOND row of graphs.

If you're running sp2 on XP, you SHOULD be at about 219-350 megs of ram depending upon what you load up.

If you use FIREFOX for web browsing, especially tabs, keep in mind it takes up 100-300 megs of ram while in use.

Note about ram: Every knows about RAM and Hard Drives right? Well RAM is faster than your Hard drive. MUCH faster (I wont bore you with details but that's why it a gig of ram is as expensive as an 80 gig hard drive).

When your computer's programs that are loaded use MORE than (in this case 504 megs) it's RAM (as indicated by the graph previously specified), the system THEN begins to use your HARD DRIVE as ram. Hard drives are MUCH slower, thus resulting in what you see as a slow down in your pc.

The cause of the usage of your ram is what we were after. Be it spyware, just use, or virii.
