    Which One?

Script Frenzy starts April 1. I need to commit to one of the two ideas I have, and I can't decide.

    1. Low-budget story I can shoot myself on a shoestring, about a teenage Dominatrix in Memphis whose top client is the most powerful preacher in town, or

    2. Big-budget screenplay I can try to sell, about sexploitation and drugs on the very bottom rungs of the film industry ladder (extras, production assistants, etc).

Which movie would you rather see? The first is a new idea and the second is one I've been kicking around for years. I can share more details via PM if anyone's interested.

I think the time is right and ripe for #2! Think of the path paved by "The Devil Wears Prada", both book and movie (I thought the book was actually crap, but the movie managed to redeem it somewhat).

I know yours is going to be original - I don't mean to suggest that you're intentionally copycatting in any way. I'm just saying that it will appeal more to agents/studios for sale because of it! Know what I mean? It will be entertaining, interesting, PLUS everyone will love guessing who Characters A, B, C, etc. really are (even if they're not based on anyone specific). A la Miranda Priestly = (duh) Anna Wintour.

i picked #2. it has more potential for depth.

#1 sounds to obvious to me. maybe it's the "preacher" thing. it makes it seem like obligatory shock value.

*note: i don't mean that in a bad/mean way at all. just saying.

Did you see "Gosford Park"? #2 makes me think of this, more stylistically than anything. Send it to Robert Altman!

Penny, I agree with you. The concept needs work.

OTOH, I could shoot #1 in Memphis within a year, I bet. It wouldn't require much of a budget at all. It would be nice to hurry up and shoot a feature and get it into some festivals... but there are no guarantees.

The second one would require such a big budget I wouldn't be able to shoot it until it got some attention. I could get it into screenplay competitions and such, but I likely wouldn't be able to direct it until years from now. If I write that one for Script Frenzy, I'd probably shelve it until I finish my novel and its screenplay adaptation. It's a bigger project by far.

That influences the decision but either way has its pros and cons. I can't decide!

I say 2. I agree with Penny, the preacher in the first one is a bit obvious shock value for me, the second one seems more interesting and indepth.

How about a screenplay about exotic dancers that post in a Random Thread...then it all goes wrong! OK, dumb.
    Maybe that's why I don't write anymore

Well then you just have to do both. Is that horrifically unrealistic? Write #2 for Script Frenzy and start it making the rounds, and then start working writing AND shooting on #1 while #2 is getting out there. Both projects would feed the other one in a sense, with experience and exposure. (No pressure . . .)

I wanna come do your craft services in Memphis . . .

K is pushing for #2 as well, but probably because the male lead is based on him.

I do already have some awesome scenes for that one too. I've got one scene from an earlier attempt at this screenplay that's one of the best scenes I've ever written. I tried to write this story years ago but I was too close to it... K says that now is the best time to return to it, since I've stepped out of L.A. and can look back on it, but it's still fresh in my mind. He has a point.

It's called Connected and I've even got a soundtrack playlist on my iPod already, LOL. Guess I'll go with that one. If anyone wants to make a case for #1 though, I'm still listening!

I love that title! Genius. And you know what? I create soundtracks on my iPod for fiction projects too!

And K is right about the timing, I think.

I worry that it might be seen as passe due to those other shows... then again, I do have a very original take on it that's never been done, so yeah. I think it has a good chance of success. I need to rework the story a lot, but I've got awesome characters already.

Okay. Tonight I'm going to get to a stopping point on the novella, then return to it after Script Frenzy, and I'll spend my writing hours for the next few days on reworking the Connected story so I can bang it out in April. After that I'll finish the novella and push it out there, go back and revise Connected as needed and get it out there, and start on the Domme story. Whew. I have a lot to do this year. Got some short films to shoot in May too, argh! It's a bit overwhelming!

That's the shorts I'm shooting in May!

I'm outsourcing that writing, looks like. That genre just does not go with my writing style. I can direct it but not write it. I found a guy in L.A. who might be writing it for me, and I'm also talking to a good friend of mine who writes for a living to see if he has time. I'm normally such a control freak I prefer to write and produce and direct myself (and edit too, when possible), but I have enough sense to know when someone else can do a better job, and this is one of those times!

Number 2 sounds so interesting but, its definatly more complicated and I reckon if you kick it around a bit longer youll come up trumps at a later date.

I voted for 2... I like it better and it sounds like someone I would enjoy watching.

But you asked for a case for 1 so here goes. You just said you could do it right off, get some attention and then if all goes well go do #2. You could capitalize on the current Spitzer issue i.e. high placed hypocrites on sex work. The second ones kind of sounds like a documentary and might piss some people off. I could star as the preacher (jk).

Well, I've been kicking #2 around for close to four years now. It is more complicated, but I've got more of a story and better characterization worked out than the first one, which I just came up with about a week ago.

Hadn't thought of the Spitzer connection, you're right there. If I went with #1, I think I could make some interesting points on double lives and being oneself, and social pressure to conform to a certain ideal (the schoolgirl moonlighting as a Domme, the powerful preacher sneaking out at night to submit). Memphis would definitely be a good setting for that. It's a thematic issue and I'd like to play with it. Connected isn't a documentary, it's quite fictionalized but a lot of the little scenes and moments are from my own experience. It might piss someone off, but eh, they're people I've already pissed off anyway.

I have a fantasy cast for everything I write or consider writing. It helps me write. My dream actor for that role is actually - I think he'd be awesome in it!

I was just saying it sounds kinda documentary, but yeah you asked for an argument for one so I gave ya one

I can't look at Ben Gazzara without thinking of all the hysterical lines from "Road House".... hehe "Polar Bear fell on me"

I picked number two-I like those tells-all sort of movies. And I hate movies about teens that don't involve Molly Ringwald.
