    Bartending

My friend called and asked how I was. Fine. Asked if Im working. Kinda. Said shes bartending. OK, great. Asked me if I wanted a job as a bartender. I guess. Then she asks if I have any experience and Im all no and she said GREAT! Come down and meet the owners at 8 tonite.

Um. OK. So I guess Im going to apply for a bartending job tonite?!

How are the tips in bartending? Really? Is it a hard job? Ahhh... Im so unprepared!

I was just about to look into bartending school, but then this bartender told me that some owners see it as a joke and that you don't need to go.

Don't you need to get licensed as a bartender or something? I would like to know how to get into to it too.

I think you can make good money depending on where you're at. There's probably more tips at a fast-paced nightclub than a small family restaurant.

No license needed. Shes been there a month and the only license she has is a cosmetology license (like me) ....

I guess this is a busy family owned sports bar. My mom said its been there for years and is a pretty well known spot. I guess well see since Im going in on a Friday night!

I wonder if bartending is like stripping, where sometimes you can make really good money even if it's a dive? I'm probably going to do this myself and most of the bars around here are nothing fancy, some look downright shitty. This site talked me out of going to bartending school lol Cinammon.

Do let us know how you make out, I am very curious!

Really? It helps if you have connections, I guess. What state do you live in? Does it differ from state to state....

I don't know anybody in the bartending business or someone who works in a restaurant. Hell, I got turned down for waitressing positions due to lack of experience.

My friend who is a bartender told me that they'll teach you everything you need to know on the job. (meaning bartending school is a waste of money. Why spend money on something that they'll teach you for free?)

I think tips can be good depending where you are working. My friend wouldn't say it's hard, but if you're closing you'll have to clean everything up.

My bartender friend told me this:
WHEN YOU ARE BEHIND THE BAR, YOU ARE IN CHARGE. IT'S YOUR BAR.

    Just remember that. Good luck

Interesting..so what about those bartending ads that say "want experience"?

Do you just walk in a bar with confidence and say "I"m interested in this job"?

My friend pointed out to me that my calm, "too sweet girl" demeanor might be the reason why I can't get hired as a waitress.....She said to be more aggressive.

Ooooo goodie. I love being in charge.

I guess we'll see. I wasnt looking for a bartending job. She just called me out of the blue. I was like huh? Uh, ok... I hadnt heard from here in about 3 months! I guess her friend is related to the owners and shes been working there like a month and shes working like 60-70 hrs a week and wants them to hire me cuz Im a hottie! <--- thats what she said!

A little background - we went to cosmo school together and both dislike doing hair - lol... we have something in common! Oh and fake boobies... we have that in common too...cept hers are bigger.... bitch

Lotsa times you start off as a barback or a coctail waitress - get to know everyone blah blah and then tell em you want to learn to bartend... I guess. I dont know first hand but this is how all the bartenders at my old club got to be bartenders - they started off by waitressing...

I agree with most posters, that you don't need bartending school if the managers or staff are willing to teach you. I bartended in L.A. and it's very competitive because there are so many "actors" that bartend to make ends meet. Most of the hot, high volume places in L.A. anyway, want experience. They will even ask what your average volume is in sales so they can figure out what kind of volume you're used to.

I opted to go to bartending school. It all comes down to the instructor and the realism of the course. My latest instructor was the best. I got my first job when a new nightclub was opening up, and I was the first one to show up for the app/interview process. After a year I moved on to a better hot Hollywood nightclub. In a high volume bar, you make the most tips, and time flies because you're so busy. It's so much fun. In a slower paced bar, depending on the clientele, you can develop your regulars just like dancing. They come in to see you and can tip very well because of the rapport you have with them.

Then I guess they want experience. You have to start off somewhere of course, and then I guess work your way up.

I guess lol. I've never walked into a bar and asked. I think knowing someone in the bartending industry helps.

And Audrey, your arms are probably gonna be tired the first day. I should mention that my friend has been bartending for a looong time so that's why he doesn't find it hard.

I think bartending school was worthwhile. It was only $200 for two weeks of classes. I mean $200 is one shift. It's easy to make that back. And while we focused on kind of mundane stuff (e.g., what kind of glasses to use for which kinds of drinks), it at least gave me enough confidence to not be too intimidated when I first started.

It's not necessary, but it is helpful, IMO.

Frankly it all depends on the bar. Some bars it would be really hard to go in without any schooling, others not so much. I just sort of picked it up, I mean the places I worked were mostly beers and shots, so I had time to learn how to make the other drinks. Other places I couldn't do the work, to many crazy drink orders, those are the places where I think bartending school would be good.

I dont think this is the type of bar I want to work at. Its a very nice bar but the crowd is very rough. Not to mention the owner isnt really on the up and up. My friend is working 60-70 hours a week under the table... If Im going to get a job I need it to be legit so it can go on my resume... Needless to say I dont think Im going to work there, just not my cup of tea.

If you do go to bartending school, which you might want to if you really dont know how to make drinks, DON'T put it down on an application, it is considered a joke haha. No offense.

I am bartending right now and I personally don't like it. I had to take a job doing it (I've done it here and there before) cause the snow is so bad here and my rear wheel drive car will not get me to and from Chicago safely to go dance...GRRR.... so till it clears which hopefully will be next month, I'm stuck.

I guess it is "Your bar" in the sense that you can kick somebody out, but big deal. You can't kick everyone out, you end up slaving over everyone, washing dishes all the time, cleaning, having to be polite to assholes, polite to your boss, etc. It really is a pain. I hate it.

As for how it pays it really depends on the place and the night. I work somewhere high end but because it's been slow recently (no idea why either) I made like 41 dollars last night, yippe.

I say fuck bartending. I should wear my I'm a Waitress Not A Slave tee shirt to work tonight and piss everyone off haha
    I am unfortunately bartending
