Default What if you're not the pole trick goddess?

I could be auditioning as early as tomorrow night, depending on how things go.

I've practiced dancing in front of a mirror, but just dancing and no pole tricks.

I'm trying to imagine how I would look getting up there after someone like this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnVCW...let/StoreFront

What are the expectations of the clients? Management already said don't worry about it; just be able to move well and look great. I don't want the guys to think I'm half-assed. Is it unrealistic to go into this without knowledge of pole work or any decent dance background besides having fun at a club?

I was on YouTube looking for some moves and variations on floor work, which is a weak spot for me because I look like I'm doing yoga. I found that video posted above and got intimidated (again).

Also, kinda random: I don't know this club's rules with outfits, but it seems like some clubs enforce a thong (where I auditioned and was hired years ago), whereas other clubs will let people do Brazilian-cut bootie shorts and string bikinis (both of which are more flattering to me than a thong). Experiences with this?

You will be fine as long as you can move to the music. A lot of dancers (including myself) can only hold onto to the pole. If you are interested in doing pole tricks I'm sure someone at your club will help you practice. That's usually what happens where I work. Don't be so nervous about how you look on stage. I always feel like I must be boring but I have my own style and get some compliments every once in awhile.

pole tricks come in time. I still find new ones every once in a while that amaze me.
I just learned how to climb the pole feet first and sort of inch my way up and turn around and come back down boobies out upside down.

as long as you can dance the rest will come in time.

Its important to look relaxed, sensual slinky and damn hot up there. Nobody needs poletricks for that. In fact sometimes a trick can ruin the flow.

Iv always figured men must be more into sexy floorwork than a difficult looking poletrick?

I am quite impressed by pole tricks because I know how difficult they can be, and I talk them up a lot as it helps to keep the guys' attention on the stage. But to be sexy and make money you don't even need to touch the pole, some of the highest earning dancers I have worked with never bothered with it. Relax, have fun, you'll be just fine...

The only pole trick that I do is humping the pole. LOL. For me, the pole is just there to get me from one side of the stage to the other and the help me stand up after doing floor work. Last night, I went on stage right after one of the best pole dancers in our club. Once I got on stage, I just amped up my eye contact and smiling and nobody had a complaint or even noticed enough to mention it. I've actually had quite a few guys already tell me that they don't care for pole work. Do what makes you comfortable and you'll look great no matter what.

I can do a lot of pole tricks, but I've never noticed them helping me for auditions or dances. Most of our top earners don't do any.

Don't worry about it. Seriously. Many dancers don't do pole tricks. I myself only use the pole to lean against while smiling and swaying my hips around. My stage set is very simple, fairly slow moves with lots of eye contact, smiling, and sexy faces. Yesterday I went on stage after a girl who is probably my favorite dancer at the club. She's a trained ballet dancer, incredibly strong and flexible, and does many amazing tricks on and off the pole. I went up after her and did my normal sway, smile, wink, sway. Some guy came up to the stage and told me I should be giving the other girls dancing tips. (Yeah, right.) When I got off stage, he bought $200 worth of dances and then tipped.

Moral of the story: most guys aren't there to see tricks. Go up on stage and show them you're a fun person who'll be sexy one-on-one company, and they'll think you're the best dancer since Ginger Rogers.

In my club most of the girls can do the hanging upside down tricks etc, and I often have to go on after them. The extent of my pole work is a couple of spins and some dodgey grinding lol. I would say that if you have the confidence, smile lots and make eye contact then you will do well. Move slowly and enjoy the music.
I have stood and watched some of the others routines and have noticed that a lot of the time hardly anyone is watching as they are chatting etc. I have even nearly fallen over and nobody even noticed! If you can do good lapdances (if your club does this) It won't really matter too much how good your pole work is. I get loads of guys buy 2+ dances and my pole work is basic.

I went in tonight, auditioned, got hired and then stuck around a bit to get my bearings. Four hours total. Sold one lap dance LOL. Did a turn on stage and got over my terror, though one guy told me I have to believe I'm the hotness and dance for *them*, not the pole. Hell, I was happy I didn't faint or fall over lol.

Very supportive dancers and staff - wow was I relieved.

Without SW, I would have had a rough time all over. I listened to all the advice in this thread and read it more than once.

I read this thread before I went in this afternoon, and thank you so much everyone for your help. You really enabled me to go there and do my thing.

Next up: more confident stage moves and learning how to hustle. I noticed that guys do the "maybe later" a lot or turn into mush mouths. Thankfully folks who said some form of a direct no at least let me move on faster. I think some guys have a game of how long will she sit there (I tried to move on before three songs) and another game of how much can they fuck around with you over saying yes or no to the lap dance sort of toying with whether to seal the deal.

I do think I seemed overwhelmed, which cuts in on the confidence.

Think about this too: How do you think we learned how to do pole tricks? In the club! Nobody knows when they show up

Oh and I have to tell you this: my audition outfit was crap lol. I wore black boots with three-inch heels (the kind you could wear to a library lol) and a dress for $19.99 that I bought this morning from Mandee that didn't exactly scream sexy.

The dancers volunteered outfits and shoes immediately so I would look better. They rocked. They helped me with scoring a lap dance.

I really couldn't have found a better cheering section in the other dancers.

I know tricks on the pole but I don't make any money on the pole. They want the personality and the eye contact. Just smile and look in everyones eyes the ones that look back are who you talk to when you get off stage. A lot of guys are to scared to tip at first as most lack social skills. pick some slow up beat (not depressing songs) and move slow and seductively and mix in a few moves you see other girls do but change it a little so it is your dance move not theirs and you will do fine. XOXO

You lucked out with the supportive dancers, that's actually rare from what I've seen. Probably a good club to stick with for a while, depending on whether the managers and DJs are as cool as the dancers. Sadly not always the case, but frequently if the dancers are cool, the rest of the staff is.

Now that you know you can do it, I will give you one bit of information about the pole. Sometimes it helps certain dancers to learn a few tricks, as far as boosting their confidence, etc. But who knows if you will be that kind or not. You may decide you never need it, in which case, more power to you! If you want to try to learn more tricks, go in early or practice when it's slow, it can be a great way tomake a slow night go faster.

Truly I was prepared for the worst, based on what I read here. The house mom and DJ also were really helpful.

Great advice, thank you. A top earner there did the most impressive pole work I had ever seen, but another top earner said she never did any. I was relieved to see the diversity.

I have a hunch my floor work could be pretty hot if I get a handle on my moves eventually.

I also had kind of a healing experience. I've posted here before that I had anxiety about the dent on my left side from an injury. Nobody found it an issue. That was another relief because it showed my best friend was right: I was the one making a big deal out of it and seeing nothing else in the mirror, so it was a problem of confidence rather than one of shape. However, I'm prepared that someone will be an ass and mention it, or mention anything, just to be an ass and to try to dump venom on me.

Agreed with this sentiment.... I've been dancing about 8 years now and I can't do any fancy pole tricks. I've seen a few girls fall and hurt themselves and also have seen long-legged dancers kick someone in the head before. Plus, being upside down for ANY legth of time really bothers me.. unless it's centrifugal force working to keep the blood toward my feet on a rollercoaster, I don't do it.

If someone asks, I tell them the whole truth if it's another dancer.. but most times I answer with "My talents lie elsewhere!"

I don't do pole tricks and I am consistently a top earner. I ask some of the guys periodically about their views on this, and they all say that pole tricks are interesting and impressive but not sexy. The girls who do them don't really get any more tips than when they don't do them, and many girls I know have stopped doing them for that reason. Some still do pole tricks to make the time go faster or for their own amusement, and of course, it does look cool. Looking cool is not what sells the lap dances though; it is rapport and sex appeal that sell the dances. I make a lot of eye contact and smile suggestively and act like I am turned on just by dancing and it does the trick. ;-)
