    Default drinking and surgery

    Just purely hypothetically...

..if I was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday morning, would it be bad to go out and drink vodka tomorrow (Saturday) night?

Would it all clear out of my system by then, or would it somehow affect the surgery? I know there are a thousand "things to avoid for two weeks prior" because they thin the blood or do something else that would make surgery more dangerous...is drinking two nights before one of those things?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

On the Saturday (15th) before my surgery on the 17th I went out and got drunk. Not tipsy..drunk. My surgeon said as long as 24hr before minimum I stopped drinking and pounded the good fluids (ie. water, gatorade) I'd be ok.

Drinking thins the blood my doc said.

I was just fine during surgery and after.

awesome, lol. I don't need to get smashed, but some friends that I haven't seen in forever are coming to town, and we're all going out, so it'd be nice to join them in having a few drinks.

good idea re: "good fluids" the next day, too.

Well, you know...it's not foulproof because everyone's body dispels alcohol, etc at a different rate. If your body takes a bit longer than average, then you could run into some problems.

I would advise not drinking (more than 1-2 drinks for enjoyment) and not taking any chances. You should also probably let your doc know that you were drinking the night or so before. They may want to run a blood test to make sure that you're good to go.

I was told by one doctor not to drink for 2 weeks before. The dr. I chose AND the nurse at the hospital said 24 hours before. I didn't drink for 1 week before, with the exception of one shot of Grey Goose 6 days prior.

Thanks everyone. I ended up having two shots (I only saw TM's reply before I went out...oops.) I think my body metabolizes alcohol well (?) b/c I never ever ever get hangovers, even when I've been beyond trashed. And I drank nothing but water at work on Sun...so hopefully it'll be okay.

update: made it through the surgery okay.

now i just have to wait a week to see how it looks (covered by splint/tape/gauze now. not being able to see it is agony, b/c it looks way too thin from what little i can see. but maybe it just looks thin b/c it's held in so tightly by the splint and tape? (i hope!)
