Default Herbal remedy for upper respiratory infection?

I smoked too much pot last week and now I have a nasty cough that produces solid globs of yellow/green mucus. I had fever/chills earlier this week, though I actually think it was unrelated. I am the sort who usually would head to the doctor for antibiotics right about now, but I read online that they aren't all that effective on upper respiratory infections, and I'd like to try something a bit more natural. I have a friend who is a professional herbalist, and I called him, but couldn't get in touch. Anybody on here have any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

I hate to say it, but have a doctor diagnose it. If you want soemthing natural please check out http://www.bastyr.edu and you can get to the link there for the general public it will give you the listings for an ND in your area. They can help you better decide between antibiotics and natural remedies, and they'll have the appropriately strengthed prescriptions.

Thanks. I've had this before though, I kinda feel comfortable saying I know what it is. But I'm sure you're giving me good advice.

If it's jsut a cough......I can say that personally a cooked down syrup of honey, limes, garlic, gignger, and thyme helps a lot. It's an expectorant as well as broad spectrum antimicrobial. Including viri, bacterium, fungi and anything else that might be amiss. 2 parts honey, one lime chopped up, ten cloves garlic mashed, 2 whole ginger roots, and 2 teaspoons thyme, it's my own cough syrup recipe, and comes with the disclaimer i am not a physician, I just know it works for me.

When you say 'just a cough,' what do you mean?

I mean nasty icky green stuff chest congestion. If you have pneumonia, totally different that needs a doc. I take the above for bronchial inflamation. It helps. I don't smoke anything so I'm not familiar with what happens with too much of smoking stuff, but I would venture to guess if you have smoked too much, then the tubes are irritated. This will help, be prepared to have all of it come out at once though. I take 2 TBSP of the syrup 3 times a day when I have a cold or bronchial inflamation. If it lasts more than 7 days see the doc. If the syrup is helpful then great, I hope it is.

I'm not a fan of going to the Doctor either. I think doctors work hard and are great, but not answers for everything when something strikes sometimes you just have to try yourself first. That's why I have all these little tidbits of health things floating in my head. I feel sorry for the person who examines my brain after death.
