    Default 1500 calorie diet

So I'm trying to lose a couple of pounds. I thought it would be easy for me to stick to a 1500 calorie diet. So I bought a little notebook and have been keeping track of what I eat and how many calories. It's only been two days but it's SO hard. Yesterday I was good with a couple hundred to spare in case I wanted a snack or something. I went out with my Mother and she wanted me to take her to the dinner. I ended up getting a grilled cheese sandwich. Well when I went home it had 670 calories!! Then today my boyfriend and me went to the movies and I had a small popcorn with butter not thinking that would rack up that many calories.... 630! So at least I'm slowly starting to realise what's good and bad as far as calories. It just really blows my mind that some days I could be racking up close to 4000 calories!!!

^ try to concentrate on eating small meals throughout the day... like 200 or 300 calories per meal allowing yourself to go over a few times a day.

also, focus on raw fruits and veggies. you could eat as much as you want and then save calories for non raw fruit/veggies.

I read (but haven't corroborated) that each gram of fiber in food burns 7 calories... so a can of sweet corn may have 210 calories but 7 grams of fiber, so if it's true that can would only be 161 calories.

don't get on yourself for treats. just focus on portions.

I hear you. I have a hard time too lately. I have NEVER in my life been on a diet, but now I need to loose 10lbs. Well, it sucks. I have figured out I am eating roughly 2500 cals a day now!! It sounds like a ton and I guess it is. Boo. This is from the girl who spent months in a hospital recovering from anorexia. Who would have thought I would ever like to eat!! Damn you therapy, you worked too well!

Congratulations. Writing things down is great, but you should take it a step further:

    1. 1500 calories is a good number for a calorie deficit. Mine is bet 1300-1400, but everyone is different.

    2. What will your calories by comprised of? Mine is usually about 50% carbs, 30% protein, and 20% fat.

    3. For the first few days, not only should you write everything down, but its good to break your calories into multiple meals and MEASURE your serving sizes. For things like meat, if you don't have a scale, remember a piece of chicken/red meat should be the size of your open palm. A piece of seafood can have a diameter up to your first knuckle.

After about a week, I was pretty comfortable with my sizes and meals by memory. However, I've fucked it all up, its always very easy to get off track. Good luck!

Look on the bright side though... if you've been eating around 2500 a day and not gaining weight like a cow thats probably your balance point. Dropping it any would make a difference.
Its nice to track calories just for the awareness factor. You begin seeing food that are definite no-no's. When I began tracking for example I realized that my "snack" of an apple and pb had way more calories than one should eat as a snack.
It gets easier though your body will begin to adjust and you will begin realizing where you can effortlessly remove excess calories.
