You're talking about gentian violet. My best friends swears by it and has used it on her two daughters. it's supposed to work well. I take probiotics, and they help my tummy feel better. Not sure about giving it to a baby, though.

I think they are great to take when you are experiencing symptoms or after taking antibiotics. I would be very hesitant to give supplements to an infant though. The natural flora of your baby is being formed right now and your breast milk is playing a major role
i just wrote a paper on probiotics/prebiotics for my microbiology class lemme find the part of the study about breast milk

    k found it:

    "Breast-fed infants
are remarkably healthier and have a completely different
intestinal flora than do bottle-fed infants.

    A predominance
of Gram-positive bacteria (notably bifi dobacteria)
has been established for the former infants.

Bottle-fed infants have higher infection rates, correlating with their
more complex microbial community [Gibson and Rastall,
    2004].
Pathogenic bacteria have a greater probability
of establishing themselves in bottle-fed infants."

I also had thrush from breastfeeding my daughter and used a probiotic from gnc. You take it and small traces may pass to the baby, but it's not harmful, but don't give the baby any meds or vitamins. Just wipe the baby's inside of the mouth and tongue with a wet rag. My infection cleared up in about a week. Goodluck-i kno it's hard to deal with!

Totally give probiotics to your baby!! I have given them to Adrian and Makayla since they were a few weeks old. I use Jarro-biotics. It's powder form and you just mix it in with whatever they're eating. If they're nursing, you just mix it in some expressed BM or you can dab it on the nipple.

I highly, highly, highly recommend taking good, high quality probiotics!!

I realize this is somewhat o/t, but did anyone else think of Catch-22 when gentian violet was mentioned?
Aaanyway, always take a probiotic *after* I'm done with a run of antibiotics, and stay on it for the same length of time I was on the antibiotics. Saves me from a yeast infection....
