Default Do you think our pets get bored??

I was laying on the couch last night and my cat was across from me on the arm of the other couch, and I was just watching her sit there. Looking up at the ceiling, looking down at the floor, staring straight ahead. I felt bad for her. I mean if you really think about it, when we leave them by themselves they have got to go stir crazy. Just want to die out of pure boredom. Do they get bored though??

I always wondered about that lol. How boring to just lay or walk around every day. But I guess to them it's just the way it is.

animals are different then people. They're much more content, a concept the average person has little if any grasp on.

eta- not to say they don't still need lots of love and attention, they're just also a lot more comfy doing nothing.

Pets do get very bored, some more than others. That's why some pets become destructive. They need some stimulation!!! Cats usually LOVE the laser lights, or string toys. Dogs also like the lights, but really should get outdoors and exercise. My dogs even enjoy watching the tv (Sunrise Earth to be exact). If your cat/dog doesn't want to play, then it's probably pretty happy with it's life. However, if it's obese you should probably force some activity.

I also agree with Lola, they have contentment a majority of the time, unlike most humans. Also they don't have a concept of time (so researchers say) and so the 4 hours of laying in one spot doesn't feel like that to them. They just think "wow this is a great spot to lay in"

Cats and dogs don't have the same sense of "time" as we do. They don't think in terms of the past or the future much more than their next meal. They do have an idea of when their owners come and go though, but that comes out of repetition and redundancy.

If your animal is destroying things, he is probably as close to bored as we can equate, and definately needs to be exhausted through walks and activities.

My cats are never bored. They have toys and scratching posts all ove ther house. And when they are tired of that, they find new games. For example, I changed the batteries in my vibrator the other day, and left the old ones on the floor. Milosh has been having a grand time rolling those AA's around the floor and into the bed. Voila!

Also, most dogs/cats are very happy to sleep 18 hours a day. I wish I could!! Then just fucking rock out the rest of the time, lol.

My smarter dog gets soooo bored, he cries and whines when im on the internet too long. He will go get a toy and throw it up in the air and growl at it, he gets extremely bored. He even watches tv . Then we have my not so smart dog, and she is happy to lay by the window and bark at anyone that drives by.

Anything you can do to get them movin and thinking is good. I would drop my cat in a big paper bag and she'd battle it to shreds for an hour. I'd jump around and dance and she would dance with me. I'd put her on my back and she'd take a running shot off it then come back to do it again. I would even take my cat out to play. It took a while for her to stop resenting the leash but she did seem to like going outside. Some cats enjoy an obstacle course.

I had a dog once that used to bark whenever I'd turn the TV off to sit in silence. Like, non-stop. I guess everybody's addicted to television.

I provide entertainment for my cats. I have a bird feeder hung up outside my bedroom window and I put nuts on the sill for the squirrels. My cats will sit for HOURS watching the birds and the squirrels. Plus they have every cat toy ever invented.

Sometimes my pom will do great big body sighs and flop on the floor. I always took that to mean she was bored.

That's why it's a good idea to get 2 dogs instead of 1.

I'd love to get her a playmate but she's almost a year old. I think she's probably set in her ways.

I am pretty sure my chinchillas get bored. Sometimes I go in their room and they are all sitting at the front of the cage staring at me with paws up on the bars. "let me out, please, I am so bored in here"

I always leave the tv on for my dog, she really enjoys it. If the tv is on when she is eating she will get a few pieces of food, walk over in front of the tv and drop them. Then eat them one by one while watching.

I usto leave Animal Planet on but I came home once and there was a badly injured shitzu on Emergency Vets and my dog was standing in front of the tv crying. So now she watches the travel channel!

My last cat got bored or lonely or whatever if I stayed away too long. Like, I couldn't travel and leave her alone for more than 1 week exactly before she'd start breaking shit. I once made the mistake of leaving her for 8 days - never again LOL

I would have someone check on her and stuff but if I were going to travel for more than a few days I would take her with me or have someone housesit.

And she seemed to like the tv left on when I went to work or whatever.

    I think they get bored.

When I was in my early to mid 20's I had two cats. Back then I used to dance 4/5nights a week and ofcourse sleep past 10 am everyday to boot.

My cats used to regularly manage to get ALL the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open and drag whatever they could carry out onto the floor. They stopped doing it when I started working less and spending more time with them.

I always wonder about that too.. I got a toy for my kitty that hangs on top of any door so she can keep herself busy when I'm out. She loves it.

She likes to follow me around too so I can give her attention.

I'm sure my cat gets bored. He is pretty easy to entertain though. A window or a ball will cure his boredom.

An interesting thing I was reading in Steve Pinker's latest book "The Stuff of Thought : Language as a Window into Human Nature" he brings up studies of primitive, isolated cultures on earth today that do not have concepts of numbers past about 3. 1 yes. 2 yes, but after that it tends to devolve into "many" very quickly, and people in these cultures have troubles counting or conceiving of counts beyond that. He also points out ways in which they measure distances and physical relationships different then modern societies. In context he points out that our sense of numbers is really not innate beyond small numbers, but we benefit from social teaching from those who raise us, who received benefits from those before them, etc.

I bring it up because I agree with the posts above that without language and much training from a society that has given us mental tools and external tools to measure time in various ways, I'd also gamble that time is another thing that we would sense somewhat differently then we do now.

p.s. that said, I don't think animals live some glamorous life of contentment. The grass is always greener on the other side of the hill, not. It's just different for them, pluses and minuses, etc.

I was just reading today that dogs can become anxious from certain tv shows/talk shows. Because sometimes commercials are higher in decibel level and frequency or guests or whatever, that causes anxiety in some dogs. Mine don't seem to notice, but maybe they do when I'm not home? Or it's just a marketing ploy for those dvds that are "dog friendly"
