    Default I Thought Carbs Were Supposed to be Filling?

    Um, I am starving. I only slept roughly three hours in the past two days and I can feel my exhaustion, but everytime I go to lay in bed I get so hungry that it keeps me awake and I have to get up and eat. Within the last two hours I have eaten 9 big chocolate chip muffins and everytime I go to lay down the hunger pangs come intensely back! I am working on my tenth muffin. Then I'll be down to two. I don't want to run out because I don't want to drive to the store tired. I always have these delusions that the cops are following me when I drive tired!

    I would think all this bread would fill me up!

    Carbs burn off VERY fast when you are active..and turn to sugar,then fat when you arent active. You'd be better off with fiber or protein to keep you full longer.

    Muffins are delicious, but here is what is happening to you;

    You're eating sugar filled carb muffins, your blood sugar is spiking up, it tricks you into thinking you want more food. You eat more insulin-spiking foods, and you rinse repeat.

    this link explains it;

    If you really really want to eat tasty carbs that will fill you up, whole oatmeal, or the quaker weight control brand, are both really good and filling. Mix some skim or fat-free milk in with it, maybe some cinnamon or raisins into the whole oats if you need more flavor, and indulge and enjoy!

    Whenever I'm too hungry to sleep, I've found that warm foods work better than anything else. Try some sort of soup or scrambled eggs or something.

    When I get like that, I find that polenta with cheese works best. Just slice off some of the prepared polenta at the grocery store, microwave it for a minute, pour in a little milk or broth, mash it up, top it with a little grated cheese and enjoy. I swear it's the ultimate "ahhhhhhh" food.

    I tried polenta for the first time at an Italian place a week ago. It tastes so good with any kind of sauce or topping.

    I have never tried polenta. This looks good:

    Probably nowhere near as healthy though!

    I just ran to Wawa and got white rice. The carbs have got me in their sway.

    Zinaida, there are carbs and there are carbs. White rice is pretty much the same as cupcakes! You'll feel full and satisfied if you have complex carbohydrates, not simple carbs like white rice. Whole grains are way better. If you want rice, brown rice is WAY better for you.

    Have you had your fasting sugar levels tested? Hemoglobin A1C?

    No. White rice is pure simple carbs, cupcakes also have a bunch of fat in them. One gram of fat has twice the amount of calories as its equivalent carbrohydrate. Which means the body has to work twice as hard to burn it.

    But yeah, white rice is a simple carb: more sugar than fiber. You will be hungry again pretty quickly after eating it, but I think white rice is a-ok, if its a small part of your eating lifestyle. Its a staple of most Asian cultures, and obesity is a relatively new problem for them.

    I think brown rice tastes better. It's got more flavor. White rice doesn't taste like anything at all.

    I pretty much fail at cooking rice, so I just avoid it @ home anyway, save it for special occasions, like if we go to PF Changs.

    Yes Zanaida I think it might be wise, stress and diet can really wreak havoc on the system up to the point of Type 2 diabetes. I ave many slender friends that became stress monkeys, and got it too. It causes the type of cravings your talking about, it could just be insulin resistance, but you should go ask your Dr. on it. I think it's not Diabetes yet....but it's a thought/concern, the genes, and the incidence of it are rising.

    Get the fasting and the A1C Hemoglobin. They'll probably be normal, but just make sure. You don't want to have your body sick for any length of time if you're having insulin problems.

    Could this have anything to do with lightheadedness and temporary loss of vision?

    Carbs are feeling, not the white ones though. You want to stick with higher fiber carbs such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, whole wheat cereal, sweet potatoes/yams, beans and veggies such as carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes, spinach, squash, zucchini and broccoli. Be sure to get your protein in there too. Beans and rice are a great source of protein along with soybeans, tofu and soymilk. If you eat meat than definately stick with leaner cuts of meat, plenty of fish and eggs.

    If your blood glucose is low or you are dehydrated yes, make sure are drinking plenty of water as well. Fruits and veggies are made up of a lot of water.
