Default Tell me about living in SoCal!

So...In 24 hours I'm become completely disgusted with the man I thought I was going to marry. We're completely through. I'm actually very ok and happy about it.

BUTTT the only reason I live in NYC is for him. I hate it here. I'm too laid back for the city that never sleeps. So for once in my life, I'm going to do something crazy that I've always wanted to do. And thats move to Southern California!

So tell me about living there. I'm looking for like, Orange County area. By the beach is a must. I'm thinking Huntington, Newport, areas like that. I don't want to be somewhere completely ghetto. I can go up to $2,000 in rent. Strip club proximity doesn't matter- I doubt I'll be dancing out there. My company offered me a west coast position with them.

If you're laid back, I'd stay the hell out of the L.A. area. I don't know Orange County very well. Being in NYC has probably prepared you for the stress and expense, so maybe you'll like SoCal better than I did.

Well since you won't be dancing out there you'll probably love it. A fellow so-caler correct me but that area you are mentioning seems like a college area beach town. For under 2K a month I think you can find a nice coastal apartment.

I know OC very, very well so feel free to PM me any questions. 2k will definately get you a decent apartment in Huntington or Newport. Huntington is a little more laid back and full of trendy bars with lots of bros and beach kids and Newport is a little more upper class and has more trendy nightclubs and restaurants. There are a few not so nice spots of Huntington that are plagued by a drug dealers (although its pretty much all just weed). The first block or two within the beach is usually always nice because its pricey but actually a few blocks in there are some sketchy areas. Irvine is right on the other side of Newport, full of apartments, and about the safest city in America right now. Its also pretty cookie cutter though. Screw LA beach areas. Theres some nice parts in Long Beach but once you get up into LA proper expect to pay more than 2k for anything decent or safe near the beach.

I don't know about dancing, but I grew up in Huntington Beach. If it's in your blood, there is no place like SoCal. Love it. But it's not a cheap place to live.

Coming from anywhere but New York, you would find it very expensive. Were you able to get out of your lease?

I don't know a whole lot about OC, but I love SD (except for the crowds, expense, and traffic), and I hate LA!

A lot of people find LA fun and exciting though.

The majority of people I've spoken to about OC really like it there. It seems to be a nice middleground.

Good for you. I lived in Newport. It's a lot of fun.

The weed is better in Cali.

I was in Long Beach for a while. It was nice. It wasn't super expensive either. They people weren't as groovy as in NYC though. Ok but a lot of false-ness.

I highly suggest Encinitas, Carlsbad, and everything in between.

I live in Long Beach now and LOVE it. I lived in Huntington for a while and wanted to shoot myself in the head. Bros, bro-hos, idiots and tweakers. Seriously. Ignorance and stupidity up the wazoo. There is a major lack of cultural ANYTHing in HB. Newport is great if you like plastic everything... plastic people, plastic surgery, expensive houses/cars/friends and people to judge you on what you look like and what you own. Both are very pretty communities (newport obviously more so, as it's more $$), but the BEST BEST places I can recommend to you are Long Beach (fun, diverse, interesting, more down to earth and a bit cheaper than OC) around Belmont Shore/Naples, Redondo or Hermosa Beach in the South Bay (a little farther north... absolutely fantastic area) or Laguna Beach if you want Newport Beach's beauty but with more art and diversity.

With the horrendous traffic in SoCal, I think you wanna look at where you'll be working and find a place with a half-ass decent commute. It might be nice to live in your place by the beach, but if you have to spend 2 hours one way commuting, you won't be able to enjoy that place much.

That's true but traffic is going to suck pretty much everywhere by the beach. Still, try to live somewhat close to your work or in the opposite direction of traffic. For example, living in the heart of San Diego and working in the county would be better for you during rush hour traffic since you'd be going in the opposite direction (most people live in the cheaper counties and work in the city). A lot can depend on where and when you work. Or, do some research on public transportation. The Sprinter, Trolly, and Coaster could all be options.

I work in film production (commercials) so I only will be working about 5-7 days each month. I'd rather put up with a shitty commute on those days and live where I want to live

Ive found the people that dont like LA/OC somehow stayed in one place and based their whole experience on one neighborhood. The fact is that there are so many different neighborhoods and anyone should be able to find a place they enjoy. It IS very expensive for the nicer places though, but 2K you should do fine, more so if you can or want to have roommates at some point. Nice you dont have to commute much, you can pick anywhere.

If you like the beaches, Huntington, Hermosa. I'd highly recommend Newport despite yes the richness and plastic it was a blast. Esp the balboa peninsula area. Not as 'dumb' as huntington or 'wannabe' as hermosa. Youll eventually find most of the partiers on the weekends dont even live in Newport.

For a place that feels like home, I second Long Beach as being down to earth, and doesnt claim LA or OC. Great location halfway to LA halfway to OC. But youve got to stay in the nice area, such as Belmont Shore if you want near beach and shopping etc. NOT downtown or anywhere close.

Ive always found it difficult to feel that SD had much of a 'soul', but maybe its just not spending enough time there.

good luck! you wont regret it..
