nope, i'm not extremely shy..no one is!! "Shy" is a broad term for specific social anxiety disorders.
I've been reading this book : "Beyond Shyness" by Jonathan Berent and it's pretty amazing... the book talks about the term "shy" as being a brush off term for social anxiety, that SAD (Social anxiety disorder) is not anything inherited or genetic, that it is a learned response to stress, and the "fight or flight" instinct. So based on your specific degree of anxiety and the symptoms you normally endure, you can unlearn your reaction and social anxieties and relearn new ways to interact.
"Believing that "shyness" is an indelible component of the personality can be a real stumbling block to overcoming social fears. "that's just the way I am" becomes an excuse for not taking the responsibility for individual well-being. In order to change this mind-set, it is important to understand that because shyness is learned, it can be unlearned. Anxiety can be controlled."
Not sure if anyone else here really struggles with social anxieties relating to the specifics of our job, but for me it is almost crippling. I love the job so i keep coming back, but sometimes i just want to hide and not talk to anyone and shrink into a corner and cry. It's ridiculous and it has no merit, AND it's costing me money. I don't get paid to sit in the locker room and feel bad. I've lost jobs because of this too.. but no more!!
