Default Holy crap...taxes! Las Vegas use tax?

    Help!
I just looked at all my tax info from Nevada...you know, the forms you get when you register for your business liscense? It's called the Nevada Use Tax and I am so confused! This is the first year I've had a business liscense in Vegas, and I thought it would be self-explanitory on how to pay taxes from dancing there.....but uhh no.
Can somebody explain the process to me, and how I explain this to my accountant? I'm in Illinois, so as far as paying my state and federal taxes, I understand that. But how does my income from Vegas this year factor in? And how in the world do I fill out these forms? A use tax doesn't even seem relevent to dancers. My brain hurts
    Thanks so much!!!!

^^^ as to the Nevada 'use tax', this is basically an attempt to force all Las Vegas 'merchants' to collect the equivalent of a sales tax from all 'customers', and to then pay the proceeds of this indirect tax collection to the City of Las Vegas. In terms of dancers, if enforced this Las Vegas 'use tax' could require that every dancer pay X percent of their GROSS incomes to the city of Las Vegas. However, this gets complicated when customer payment is made through the club's cash register instead of direct to the dancer, when the payment is made for tips rather than a 'product' etc. I have no idea if or in what manner this 'use tax' is being collected or enforced.

As to incomes from multiple states, this is the curse of travelling dancers. On the federal tax return, it's a fairly simple matter to add up all of the incomes. But where states levee an income tax (like your home state of Illinois I assume), you'll have to segregate 'in-state' income from 'out-of-state' income to avoid double taxation. Fortunately Nevada does not levee a state income tax so you won't have to worry about filing a non-resident state tax return with them.

Look at the bright side. When I was working on the road regularly there were years where I had to file 6 or 7 non-resident state tax returns, plus a couple of Canadian province tax returns to boot !

Holy Crap! I guess I have the same question then. I was under the impression this 'use tax' form had to do with merchants buying tangible goods for the purpose or reselling them. This 'use tax' form states to report any tangible items used for personal use. These items used for personal use are then reported on the form and taxed. Since merchants buy tangible goods and then resell them, they don't pay taxes on the items when purchased with the intent to resell them. As a dancer, we don't sell tangible goods, but a service instead, so I wrote $0 on the form and sent it in. BTW you do have to send it in, even if you owe nothing. Anyway, that is what I assumed. Melonie is my assumption incorrect?

I am also doing taxes in 2 states because I just moved to Nevada in August. I sent all my tax paperwork to my accountant in CA. We'll see what happens. Anyway, I suggest you talk to your accountant ASAP and let him know the situation.

I met with my accountant (in Illinois) and he couldn't make sense of the Nevada Use Tax as it would apply to me as a dancer.

I asked several co-workers who have worked in Vegas (and had their business liscense) and they all said they just ignored it and never paid or sent any paperwork back.

I am very carefull with my taxes, and always pay what's required....I don't want to ignore this, and I wonder how it effects my federal taxes. I don't want to get audited because i f'cked up on my Nevada taxes, especially cuz I only lived in Vegas for 3 months this year.

Any Vegas girls familier with these forms? Kikiwiki? Kaylinn? VegasPrincess?

I ignored that 'use tax' form because like I said, I thought it didn't apply to me. After a couple of months, I got a Nevada Tax Deliquency Notice so I quickly sent it in and like I said, I claimed $0. I'll find out what it all means by Monday because my accountant in CA does taxes for people here in Vegas. Hopefully somebody will give us a clue before that though.

The use tax is paying taxes for items purchased for your business online, because if you bought anything online then you have not yet paid taxes on that purchase.

So if you have bought anything like clothes or shoes over the internet, then you would need to claim that amount and pay taxes for it. If you made no purchases online, and instead bought all of your clothing in actual stores then you have already paid taxes on those purchases and can claim zero and send in the paperwork. Don't just ignore it, you must send it in, but can just claim zero and send it in if you made no purchases.
