Default Does your child have a cell phone?

I just bought my daughter who is 9 a cell phone. My reason is that i dont have a home phone and in the occasion that shes home alone (rare) i dont want her to not be able to call me, my parents, etc if something were to happen. Now that Im dancing again she may be alone in the evenings for 30 minutes or so in between when I leave for work and my husband gets home. The neighbors (im in a townhouse community) and I are close so theyll keep an eye on the house and be there if she needs something but I wanted her to have a phone just in case.

When I told the lady I was buying a phone for my 9 year old she gave me this odd look. Like this . Is it so odd now a days for a child of this age to have a phone? I thought it had become commonplace - a few of my friends' children have phones and theyre 9/10 years old.

    What do you think?

Edit: I added her to my family plan. We have a 700 minute plan and between my husband and I we used a whopping 89 minutes last month. She only has speed dial numbers in it (family) and wont be taking it to school or to play. Shell have it with her when shes home alone. Its not to be taken anywhere....

If I had a kid,I'd get them a cell phone. Preferably one of those with a GPS in it so you can track wherever they are. And a severely limited amount of minutes so tehy cant run the bill into astronomical proportions!

I think Disney offers a phone where you can track their whereabouts and add minutes if needed..like if she does all her chores or gets an A in school..she can have an extra hour of talk time.

    they talk about it here:

Not my almost 9 year old, but that's because my almost 12yr old does (he also has a myspace page, claiming he's 18, but I digress).

Its pretty common now. I don't see why the sales lady seemed so surprised., especially in the age of blended families etc., I know of plenty of kid's whose "real" dad/mom has a hotline/cellphone to their kid.

Thats kinda rude of the sales lady to do that. Its not like it has a hidden knife in it nor are you leaving your daughter in a locked car with it. You're trying to remain responsible while keeping contact lines open for your daughter. There's nothing wrong with that.

^^ Yeah. If you think about it, it is really no different from having a land line at your house.

My kid is only 6 1/2, so no, he doesn't have a phone. When he is older (11 or 12) I will consider a plan like Cam suggested, simply to keep lines of communication open and to know of his whereabouts.

ONE THING- I'm sure she knows all this info already, but make sure she knows your home adress if in the event (God forbid) she has to call 911. I may be wrong, but I don't think 911 can trace cell phone calls to a location.

Exactly. Thats what I was thinking... I dunno - Id especially think it would be common here since I live in such a yuppy, upscale area. Dunno. It makes me feel better and I guess thats all that really matters. Who cares what the sales woman thinks.

I think if I were in your shoes I would just get a land line. I don't think kids need cell phones and all that stuff.

my 15-yr got his when he was 12.

my 9-yr got hers when she was 8. actually, more "inherited" from her mom when we split but i was going to get her one anyways.

not sure if i'll get my littlest one a cell that early though since she's always with her older sister anyways. but i figure definitely by her tween years. (i wouldn't be able to endure the incessant nagging/pleading, ugh.)

but in this day and age, i don't see anything wrong with embracing the technology. some people don't even have landlines anymore. so would it be unusual for a 9-yr to know how to use a landline? well, in those cases there isn't a landline so you get cell.

    gotta watch their minutes though.

Yes. My stepson is thirteen and has had a phone since he was 10 or 11 (I don't remember which). He spends time at his mom's and at our house every week. The phone is very handy when we need to change plans.

ETA: My stepson's friends all have their own phones. It is odd in his group of friends to NOT have a cell phone.

each of mine has their own phone (the youngest got one at 10.) I think it's fine that you're getting her a phone but you should consider getting a land line because she'll soon be at the yakkety-yak age and she'll deplete the time in a new york minute.

I'll never get my daughter a cell phone simply because she'll be living at home with us until she's 35 and have a chaperone with her until she's 40.

Honestly? I probably won't buy her her own phone until she's mid-teens.

My daughter is 11 1/2 and I don't agree with her having a cell phone. We tried a pre-paid cell phone and she used all the min. in 1 hour. At that age they are not responsible enough to understand minutes and the bill

No but my kids are small. I have a land line so I can't relate but who the hell cares what you get your child, no one else is paying for the bill but you, sale lady should say "here you go, thank you have a nice day"

When I have kids, they can have cells when they're 16. They can use pay phones and landlines.

Um well I just bought my 5 year old one... I am kind of laughing at myself, but you know what, I don't care. I am super duper paranoid and if she is at someones house and needs me to come get her for ANY reason then I want her to be able to ring me. Even if it is only because she had a fight with her friend. If something worse happened then she knows she can always reach me.

In Australia we have these fancy little phone called "gecko" phones. There is a button you press to ring mum and a button to ring dad and you can program in up to 20 other numbers, but their is no number pad to make any other phone calls and I can restrict which numbers can ring it as well.

Yeah I feel a bit silly but for $12 a month I dont care. If she loses it I dont care. If she needs me she can reach me, thats it.

ETA: these ones send my phone an sms if she has used up her free minutes in the month and I can cancel outgoing calls or cap them or something.

So I dont think you are silly.

G has a cell phone and he just turned 11 in Feb.

I got him one of the least fancy phones I could find. No internet access. If he wants to go online he can do that from home on the computer.

Unlimited calls and texting, rollover minutes and all that.

Ground rules are: can't use it while during school hours and he can't bring it to sleepovers.

I got him his cell phone because there are times when he's on his own and I like the security of being only a phone call away. It's also great when we go to an event where there's a lot of people and if by chance we get seperated we can find eachother. And he's a responsible good boy and he earned it.

I'll probably get my son the Disney one when he is a little older. It sounds like you got it for a good reason. I don't think any age is too young if they a. Know how to use them. b. Actually need one/have a use for it.

I see 5 and 6 year olds with them all the time around here, so I can't see why the lady acted like 9 was weird. The only thing that I think is ridiculous is when I'll be in Saks and see a little 5 year old girl walking around, carrying her Burberry or Coach bag, talking on her cell like she is negotiating a major business deal while mom is shopping. That freaks me the fuck out! I mean, just because you have the money and can doesn't mean you should.

Its probably a lot cheaper for you to have gotten the extra phone added to your family plan than it would have been to get a land line. I for one wouldn't feel comfortable having my child home alone with no phone access.

Ha! I got everyone beat. My lil one is 6 with her own phone. (prepaid of course).

Hearing her dad's voice these days offends the very essence of my being. So they have a direct line to each other.

I don't know why she was so suprised. These days kids have credit cards, ipods, etc before they get to junior high/middle school.
