    Default (Fruit) sugar= bad?

I'm trying ot stick to a diet to lose fat and gain muscle and I want to try and monitor my eating habits a bit closer. I was wondering if anyone knew if fruit sugar was a hinderance? Like, fruit shake and fruit cocktail and fruit juice. I'm obviously going to stay out of things like icecream and chocolate candy (easily my biggest weakness) but should I stay away from all fruit sugar too? Just wondering if anyone had any advice.. thanks y'all!

Fruit's not bad for you there's pectins and oogliosacharides in them which feed our bodies natural flora, we can't digest it, but the beneficial bacteria in us can. You produce B vitamins and vitamin K through this process.
Avid fruit juice, you remove the fiber. Fruit cocktail is okay packed in water, whole fruit is the very best to use in your shakes. If you are worried about glycemic index add 1 tsp of cinnamon as this will bring the GI of the fruit down by as much as 20%. Not to mention cinnamon has a favorable effect on insulin uptake, cholestoral (the LDL kind lowering it, and HDL raising it), and it helps to lower triglicerydes in the blood. The more insulin your muscles get the more they'll bulk. Stick with whole fruits, you'll do fine. The vitamin C in them is also VERY beneficial to you. Here's an article:

Yes! That is sooo helpful. Just the kind of stuff I wanted to know. I really like my fruit shakes every day and I'll add the cinnamon when I do. Yeah, its all whole fruit, for sure. I knew there was a reason I wanted to stay away from fruit juice. I need to remember to just drink more water instead. I do love my fruit cocktail, maybe that can be my sweet treat?
Thanks so much! More info is totally welcome!

Whole fruit is better than juice cocktails or canned fruit packed in syrup.

Others have touched on some of the many benefits of raw fruit already. There is one other: For all the good things fruit gives you, it also doesn't take a lot of energy to digest. As long as your stomach isn't full of steak and potatoes, fruit will pass through your stomach and intestines quickly. This means you don't get the typical drowsiness after eating fruit that you would from something that requires a lot of blood flow and energy to digest.

Fruit eaten AFTER a large protein/carb meal can sit in your gut for a long time and actually ferment. This will give you indigestion.

Whole fruits are the BEST. Fruit juice and cocktail aren't very good at all, usually fruitjuice and cocktail have added sugar and the healthy parts are strained out. UNLESS you have a juicer..then you're good to go.
Like someone else mentioned use cinnamon.
Also if you are doing shakes add spinach, You' can't taste it when it's blended and it adds SOOOO much healthiness.
General rule of thumb,,,you CAN overdue fruits. Eat twice as many for every serving of fruits, you should be consuming two servings of vegetables (especially green vegetables...stay away from high starch/carb vegetables) you can have potatos occasionally, but not daily, and sweet potatoes are better than idaho/yellow or red potatoes.

Fruit is actually about the best way to get sugar in your diet. If you like juice but are worried about extra sugars try using a juicer. I’ve got some simple juicer recipes if you’re interested. Feel free to PM me for a list.

If you are looking to gain muscle be sure to eat plenty of low fat proteins.

I noticed you mentioned how much you love chocolate. I do too! Try dark chocolate to get that fix while adding as much health benefit as you can with chocolate.

Here is the abstract study on cinnamon and glucose/HDL/LDL:

    And here's actual articles:

Enjoy! You may also be interested in a thing called Kefir, a fermented milk product. It's done wonders for my health and muscle building.

    The above is a study.

Here is an article about what it is:

And last but not least here is the link of people who have free grains available:

I make my fruit smoothies with Kefir anymore. It's pretty much all the milk product I drink, and I also make home made yogurt. I have a Euro Cuisine YM100 Yogurt Maker. Well worth the $40 investment.

Fruit cocktail and fruit juice are not the best way to consume fruit. It sounds like you're having your fruit processed and sugared, which is NOT healthy. Just eat the fresh whole fruit. It does have sugar, but the vitamins, fiber, and other health benefits more than make up for the little bit of fructose.

Thanks for all the links! Some of the stuff mentioned about cinnamon and diabetes is really facinating to me.
Corinne, does Kefir come in pill form at all or do you make your own? That sounds labor intensive but who doesn't like new hobbies? Just wondering if its something that could be bought in a health store.

You really can't taste spinach? How much do you use (1/4cup, 1/2cup?) Its one of my favorite veggies but I think it has a super strong taste. I'd give it a try, though.
I guess it wouldn't taste any stronger than wheatgrass.

    Hi Vivian:

Yes the Wikipedia article makes it sound intensive doesn't it? Actually it's a lot of fun. You just get the grains put them in milk, let them ferment, and then between 12 hours and seven days later you harvest it, by straining out the grains. Drink the liquid. You can just sit the jar you put the milk and grains in on the counter, or in your oven with the light on for a slightly faster fermentation. Blend the fruit with the liquid and some honey, flax, oat bran, or any number of other yummy things and Voila highly nutritious shake.

I promise it's easy Speaking of which it's time to harvest some and make some more yogurt.

Also the more sour a food the more it lowers it's glycemic index. Kefir has about 4 crbs per serving, depending how much lactose the probiotics have digested you can also jsut flavor with vanilla and sweetner or honey.

P.S. Yekefah is hitting the nail ont he head about the nutrients outweighing the sugar. Also if you are working out hard your body does like a little bit of simple sugar. It will help build muscle.

I use 1 cup of water, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder by optimum nutrition, 1 cup frozen strawberris and 1 cup of spinach. Miraculously the spinach flavor is GONE...POOF. Make it in the am and you have a nice flavorful shake with low carbs and high protein, healthy sugar too. I also add ground flax seed to through in healthy fats. Mix well or it tastes all weird. I get my frozen strawberries from Costco in a big bag. Wymans is the brand...they're better than ANY frozen strawberrie ever. I use frozen because it's like ice and give it a more shake like texture.

    Hey all!

I just made my breakfast shake for the day. This time, I did use 1 tsp. cinnamon and 1 cup spinach to the mix of frozen mixed fruit and dried blueberries. Instead of fruit juice, I used water. Its so yummy! Yep, I can't even taste the spinach, its just like before.
I'll experiment with making Kefir in the future. I'm not sure if I could even find that grain here on Guam. I may have to wait till I get back to the states. The directions are pretty straight forward. Making yogurt sounds cool, too but I don't eat it enough to justify buying a yogurt maker. Bummer. I should really break for a nice juicer, though.
Thanks for all the sound advice. Way to point me in the right direction!

Sounds like you already have everything under control! I guess I'll just reiterate what other have said then: fresh fruit is the best. I wouldn't eat any fruit cocktail personally, and fruit juice should be treated as food. Also, try to get fruit juice that's 100%, with no sugar added if possible.
