Default Nigeria, can you tall me about it?

Hubby told me he might have to go, more yes than no in June so I would like to know what you know about Nigeria. I'm scared. First it was "we might have to go to Venezuela" I said "are you crazy?! now? it isn't not safe" and well it didn't go through so I was glad, even though it meant money, plus you guys helped with that, now Nigeria.

His boss is willing to buy me and the kids tickets to visit PR while hubby is in Nigeria but as nice as that is I'm not happy

I don't know much about it, but I'll tell the lil I do...2nd hand.

My daughter's God-mom is Nigerian, I met her in the AF (she joined to get citizenship). The thing that sticks out the most in all she told me about Nigeria, was how she has to creatively hide cash in packages and so forth, to mail home to her family.

She said if she didn't, because all the mail got searched, it would be stolen by the military, who was at that time (95ish) running the country.

She was always telling me how bad it was, and I know she was working really hard to get her family out of there. She even married her cousin to do so.

Sorry it wasn't positive, just what I "know/heard".

According to the latest available Lloyd's of London assessment ( October 2007) the whole country is a hellhole. Political violence over the vast oil wealth; incredible corruption and out of control crime including lots of kidnappings.

What steps are being taken to protect him ? Bodyguards ?

I've only done an airport stopover in Legon, but so many people in West Africa are originally from Nigeria that I've heard so many stories, from Nigerians as well as foreigners.

Basically, not good. For a local, it's pretty much anarchy rule. For a foreigner, it's
'stay in your compound under armed guard'.

That said, I think it's unlikely his life would be in severe danger or anything- just his possessions, and perhaps sanity. The one girl I know who lived there was on a year contract, and after 6 months was basically all get me out of here, and she's an intrepid and experienced traveller.

    Sorry

The people he's dealing with, I know them, mind you from 10 years ago (we worked together, that is how we met Brian and I) and they have done business for a looooong time.

The owner has travelled to the States and I have actually met him in person and all.

Now if Brian goes and sets up all the systems that they have bought and fixes otehr things that they are concerned about this will mean they will buy over 100 systems. They now offered Brian a umm wth is it called oh commission per system. This would mean we would be able to buy our home and not rent any more form our in laws. Our bills would be finally paid off but of course as nice as that sounds what if something bad happens? Then what?!

I spoke to Brian and he told me that the owner would pick them up, cause the other boss is also going and would set them up in a hotel and let them know where and where not to go. I am just very worried.

My best friend just got here from his native Nigeria 5yrs ago. His father owns oil, so they were from a wealthy part of Lagos. But when i asked him about it, he said the movie Blood Diamond gives an accurate portrayal of the country's current conditions. wow..scary.

    HHL:
I'm assuming that your husband's company is well aware of the variables involved when doing business in Nigeria. After all, it's in their best interest to make provisions for his convenience and safety while he is visiting Nigeria.

Myself, I left Nigeria as a Biafran War refugee in 1967 and have returned just once (in 1977, on summer vacation). Although I would like my wife and children to see Nigeria eventually, particularly the Eastern rain forest region that my father hails from, I wouldn't dream of visiting it presently.

Even natives are wary about traveling to and from Nigeria today; foreigners and/or tourists frequently have to run a gauntlet of corruption and outright thievery at Lagos Airport.

Ironically, I wouldn't have qualms about visiting neighboring Ghana or Cameroon, which are relatively stable by comparison.

Ghana's like, the safest place in the world. Tell your hubby's boss he wants to go to Ghana! I loves it there.
