Why won't god heal amputees?

I like it.
It seems so comical at first, but the point about removing ambiguity is a good one.

I hate it when atheists let fundamentalist wacko Christians define G-d and all the terms of the debate.
Aahh but read the article I mentioned earlier, Yek - that was mostly Old Testament. I dont think right wing Christian wack jobs are the only faith, based on the bible that takes it literally ... or tries to when it suits their needs...
Either way I understand what u r saying ...
Hmmm, interesting.

Thanks for the link Paris , neat stuff.
The Christian understanding of "Old Testament" is still unique to their teaching. The translations are different, the structure is different, and the interpretations are radically different. I don't know anyone except fundamentalist Christians who thinks the world was created in six days, or that G-d takes orders via prayer.
What I found most fascinating is that evangelism is moving into the realm of atheism. With the new books out on the market by Dawkins and Hitchens and authors of their ilk, it appears that this is a new social trend. One that was completely unthinkable a couple of generations back.
Heck, even devout Christians doing missionary work have absolutely no logical response to someone who says "I don't believe in god." The bible (the religious text I'm most familiar with) refers to unbelievers only in the sense that they don't believe in Christ, but assumes that people worship multiple gods or some form of deity or "false" gods. The whole concept of no god at all makes them stammer around and grasp for some kind of answer.
I wonder how long it will be before wars are started over such nonsense as atheist evangelism. When will the atheists start going door-to-door handing out literature and booklets on Saturday mornings at ungodly (pun intended) hours of early?
From a social standpoint, I find this extremely fascinating. And a bit disturbing at the same time. I really hope that the new Inquisition Era isn't upon us.

Yeah I see ur point - I was thinking more of those who just take it literally . Be interesting to see how these ideas of god have developed even from the Middle Ages. I mean the concept of god involved in everything u do I think is kinda modern - back then they prayed for relief from plague or starvation... not to have Buffy May get into UNC or Duke, PTL.
True .. but if u think about they are both beliefs since neither can be proved...Originally Posted by Paris

That said, I really don't believe in miracles, but I do believe in other explanations, I do believe that people's brains are not perfect devices (they are quite capable of hallucination and thinking up things that are not real, easily induced by minor chemical changes or damage), and I really do believe stores told and re-told over time are usually significantly embellished, and finally I really do believe that some people lie.
There is a bright side to my beliefs though. For the same reasons I don't believe in miracles, I also don't blaim God for creating the hurt and setting into motion a reality that requires miracles to fix up the fact that people really hurt, sometimes terribly. Nor do I blaim it on another super-natural character, or even on humans for being less then perfect.
But by negative side is, I do think humans are capable of using their intelligence to improve what is an otherwise cold heartless bitch called reality. By the same token, I do blaim people for spending more time in churches praying then they do in school or at work "acting" to actually effect real change. If we could get all those people to get up off their asses, spend less time praying, less time performing rituals, and more time actually doing something, can you imagine what a real difference it could make?
