Default Grieving for a complete stranger

When we were driving home from a friends place tonight a cat just ran straight under our car.

He died instantly, we turned straight around to see if we could help, but it was too late.

I moved him off the road and ran to the nearest house with lights on (it was after midnight) but they don't own him. He is on their front lawn, and they have promised to keep an eye out for his owners, and make sure he gets collected ok.

I felt so useless, I kept telling myself that he WAS alive, even though I knew he wasn't.

I've left a note in his collar (there were no contact details or name tag for him,) with my name and phone number if they want to talk, as well as a quick recount of what happened. I know Id want to be reassured that he hadn't suffered and that they stopped so see if they could help. I just wish he had a name tag so I could have called straight away, and they could have come to get him.

And I wish I knew his name.

That sucks...its why I am staunchly against allowing animals to roam free.Of course, he may have been a stray and not had an owner.

I watched a dog get hit once. We just barely missed hitting her ourselves and he dashed the other way and a car coming the opposite direction hit her. The driver was a teenage girl and she was hysterical. I assured her that I had veterinary experience and would take car of the dog...she was in no shape to stay around. The dog was hurt, but still came to me when I called her and snuggled whimpering into my arms. I noticed fresh stitches from a spay surgery so I was about to put her in the car and take her to the vet and then comb the neighborhood for her owner(she didnt have a collar on). Then an SUV pulled up and a man jumped out. He said it was his dog and his 3 year old had opened the door and the dog ran out.
I explained to him what happened and helped him get her gently into the car and he said he was taking her right to the vet.

I was so happy her owner showed up so quickly and was so diligent about doing whatever was needed to help her.

At least the cat didnt suffer....

I really hope he wasnt a stray, cos we left him there. He had a collar, but no tag. I wanted to bring him home and bury him, but my little sister was hysterical, and my husband refused.
If he had a family at least he had been loved. For a stray to live and die without love is too sad for words

Poor thing. It breaks my heart whenever I see a cat or dog dead along the road. you just know that they're someone's pet and someone out there is looking for them, hoping, praying that they're OK. I can't help but imagine some kid heatbroken.

My poor Sassy was hit by a car right out front of our house one night when we were out. When we came home we called her and called her. I thought I heard her cry out once but I wasn't sure. The next morning my husband went to go out and look for her and as he got into his truck he could see into our back yard, and there she lay. We didn't see her because it was dark and where she was was out of or line of vision. So I did hear her cry and she did make it home.

I will never ever allow my cat out a night again.

I can't handle seeing dead animals on the road. If I ever hit a dog or cat myself I don't know what I would do. But I would be a wreck for a long time. Funny though how I wouldn't feel that emotional over a possum or a rabbit...

Once when I was driving a bird flew into the front of my car and died.

It is possible to teach many cats and dogs to avoid the road. I've done it. I've never had a pet of mine die due to an accident. I probably would never forgive myself if I had. It's sad enough when nature takes it course.

It's a good person who responsibly cares for a pet.

This thread is so sad, it making me feel a bit tearful. I'd be inconsolable if that happened to one of my cats, thats why I keep them as house cats, theres just too many roads around here.

I was riding in a car about 1 or 2 late at night (not drinking etc). Two black kittens, obviously from same litter, ran across the road. The last kitten running got its face smashed under thr right tire. We stopped immediately and got out to see if we could help. It died while we were walking to it, its tail thrashing for a second or two. Its littermate came back to see what happened and then continued running. (That was really hard to watch.) We removed it from the road. As this was in the middle in a village, we decided not to ring doorbells. We couldnt talk the rest of the way home, just wipe our tears away. And think about how thoughtless the owner was.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I remember something similar when I was around 10ish. I used to go with my Stepfather when he delivered the Sunday papers every week. There was a cat that crossed right in front of the car and immediately, we knew the car had gotten him. We got out of the car, and a woman was running towards the road screaming "Morris!" and crying hysterically. The cat was indeed gone, and my Stepfather offered the woman just about everything and apologized until he was blue in the face. She would accept nothing and said that he had dashed out of the house when her Husband opened the door.

    I'll never forget it, though.

Over 10 BILLION land animals each year in the US alone live and die in horrible conditions, never having experienced love from anyone.

I wish very much that people who have a big heart for dogs and cats will learn about the far more horrific conditions that animals used for food live and die under.

I used to do animal rescue (still do) and was a meat eater, and then my eyes were opened to how horrific the meat, egg, and dairy industries are for the animals used in it.

My stepgrandfather had two dogs, a mother and daughter, that were inseperable. Because the moron didn't know how to lock his dogs up securely enough at night they often got out, and one night the daughter got hit and killed by a car. The mother was never the same.

You obviously have a heart of gold. If it was that poor kitty's day anyway at least it's last contact with humans was with one as compassionate as you.

Ironically I cope better when its a 'pest' that dies. I grew up on a farm, and shooting rabbits (to both protect our crops and to eat) was normal. I guess the thing there is that they WERE used for food and fur, plus meant that other animals could live. Its been bad out my family home over my lifetime, during one summer we had to sell for slaughter HALF our lambs, since due to the drought there was no way we could feed them.

But then Im completely against rat poisons (so inhumane) and kill-traps, we catch and release in our city house

Our pets have always been under curfew, since I grew up in the bush. Helps protect the native wildlife if the cats are inside when the birds are most active. If there's an animal roaming people will shoot it. Or dump it at my parents place :/

awww...i feel terrible for that poor kitty!! I get emotional when anyone or thing dies (except for bugs or plants-lol!) Last year my pit Butch bit me on the nose and my mom told my boyfriend to get rid of him (give him away or take him to the pound) and he had to take him to the pound and I know they put him to sleep b/c they put all "aggressive or high risk" dogs down! I cried so bad for days and was calling all kinds of trainers but we were unable to get him back!! It still makes me cry to this day!! I loved him

That really sucks. Were you both living with your mom? Why did she get to say what happened to the dog??
