    Default Mulattos???

Does any other person of mixed race get offended by this term? I think its kind of outdated, and it bothers me a little when someone refers to me as such. I think some folks don't know whatelse to say so I dont get angry just a lil annoyed. I prefer bi racial, even "mixed"is not my favorite but I prefer that over being called mulatto

    I'm not of mixed race.

But I wanted to say that the word mulatto seems like the word Negro to me. Both are outdated words and not considered flattering. Both were acceptable 50 years ago, but are kind of condescending today.

If a 70 year old person were using the word it wouldn't be so bad. If an 18 year old were using the word, I would wonder about it.

I wouldn't call it offensive so much as outdated. It'd be like saying negro, colored, etc.

The term comes from the spanish term for a "young mule". It's trying to equate multiracial people with the offspring of a donkey or a horse.

I am of Chinese, Black, Indian and Irish stock. Sometimes guys think they are complementing me by calling me a "mullata" (also some people think I'm hispanic so that they are getting into my culture by saying that.) It doesn't really piss me off but I think it's stupid.

It sounds so outdated to me. My bf will use the term sometimes, and I always correct him. It just sounds old!

I never liked that term. What are the up-to-date terms for :

    mixed black-white
    mixed asian-black
    mixed white-asian
(yeah, I know there are lots of others)

    or is that it?
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

biracial or multiracial/multiethnic is generally accepted, since it covers any combination you can think of.

I find it to be out dated AND offensive, same way with Negro.

In the UK some people refer to bi-racial poeple as HALF-CAST. I find that very offensive also.

It's like saying oriental or negro. It's very un-pc and just pretty weird.

Not to mention that it carried a negative connotation while it was used (how many freakin years ago??!)

    Yeah, offensive!
On top of that, its too similar to the other nasty "mu" word people like to use for multi-racial people.

It makes me laugh cos it is so out dated and its not a very common word here. Every so often someone will chime up with "So your a mulatto then?!" No ones ever meant it offensively so Im not bothered by it.
Very little bothers me though anyway...

Over my lifetime, I've been referred to as "half breed," "albino," "high yellow," "light skinned-ded," "mongrel," "golden" and other choice descriptions.

Although "mulatto" is certainly an archaic expression--and a relic of the Southern plantation era--I prefer it to the above terms...

    Just my , though.

How about if someone just said "mixed race"?

As in some one asking, "You are very attractive, and I can't tell your ethnicity, are you of mixed race"?

Would anyone find that offensive, or not PC?

    Do you mean "moolie"?

My Sicilian friend tells me that "moolie" is actually the slang abbreviation of "mulignan". Literally translated, "mulignan" means "eggplant".

As a Sicilian woman who dated Black men in NYC during the 1970's, she heard that expression from her family and "friends" fairly frequently.

It's outdated and has offensive roots, I think.

But it's a very pretty word in itself (the sound), so it's too bad its not really useable.

Speaking as an old White guy, I find it more outdated than anything else. It is not meant to be offensive. If no hurt is intended, it is probably a bit foolish to be hurt by it.

("High Yellow?" Even I only know that one from Jazz class. Who the Hell would say that? I got a buddy from South Africa. He says he is "Cape Coloured." For some it is a shameful thing. He is proud of it. Good for him.)

(I see that yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the murder of Doctor King. Remarkable how far we have come. Remarkable how far we still have to go.)

Oh my, did I ever learn something tonight.

    THANYOU!

I have used this term a few times to describe some of the most beautiful people I have ever seen. I never knew it could be offensive and I certainly had the opposite intent when using it. I never actually said it to someone of mixed race ( that I know of) and gosh am I gad for that now.

Because of what was written here from this point on I will know better and will do better. So again, thankyou for this topic.

that's easy for you to say. Is it okay for me to call something I don't like retarded, or gay? I mean, as long as I don't mean to hurt anybody?

To me, it's offensive and outdated... but then again I'm the girl who cringes when people call Asians as "orientals".

I'm Vietnamese and Caucasian and grew up in Hawaii... I often use the word "hapa" when refering to people of mixed ethnicities.

I think it's offensive but not as offensive as a slur; it's not so much an insult as it is outdated and ... clueless, I guess. It sort of puts me in mind of a grandpa asking "So is that what all you hep cats are doing these days?"

I'd say "half-caste" which seraya mentioned above is worse, as caste means class, more or less, and that's directly equating race to class in a way that makes me flinch.

If no harm is meant, no hurt should be felt.

On the other hand, everyone ought to be aware of the feelings of others; that is an important part of being a gentleman or lady. Some people simply do not realize what words hurt nowadays.
