Default News story- upward suicide trend

So, first off- I really had no idea where to put this so mods feel free to move!
The number of suicides is rising in both our middle-age population and our military, due to varying factors such as the economy, the war, antidepressant medications, untreated illnesses and many others.
As a nursing student, I have seen firsthand the suicide attempts that come in through the ER, and I've been in the psychiatric hospital talking to those who have attempted suicide or had friends/family commit suicide. I can personally attest that although suicide is traditionally an adolescence and geriatric problem, it is rising in the middle-age population.
I'm curious to see what you all think and spark a discussion regarding this disturbing trend.

Here's a couple recent articles to give a little more information:

It doesn't surprise me. I've been depressed, and recently fighting the urge to resume cutting. Economy, and other things, are some of my driving factors.

Middle age? Like the baby boomers are committing suicide? Whoa! I guess greed isn't as good as they thought it would be?

Maybe the fact that religion doesn't play as big a role in people's lives, is an influence on how they are dealing with depression. I'm also thinking that Baby-boomers are about the least satisfied generation, ever. They are always trying to be richer or skinnier or sexier or whatever. They are the generation of more, more, more. Appearently more of everything doesn't equal happiness.

I know my own mother (who is 59, so top end boomer) has been lamenting how her life is a waste etc. When I ask her how that is possible, her response is that she didn't become rich or isn't as beautiful as she wanted to be. I've been acting as a sort of talk therapist for her for years now, and it seems to be having some effect. She still wants to be rich, though.
