Default I think one of my daughter's goldfish is dying!

It's acting very strange. Like disoriented or something. Kinda floppy swimming. And then it laid down on its side on the gravel among the plants. I totally thought it was dead so I got the net to scoop it out and flush it then it came to and started swimming (strangely) all over the tank. The other fish seems fine. What should I do? Is it dying? What else could possibly be wrong? I know this post seems lame but I'm a tad distraught like it's in distress and I don't know what to do!

^But I haven't done anything different for the past 3 years! tbh I don't remember if it ate when I fed them this morning. I think it did, but I didn't really pay attention. Somebody please help Starshine!

Now it's back on the gravel among the plants slumped over on its side. It seems to be gulping.

Poor fishy. Does it have ick?

"Fish with Ick will often flick their bodies against rocks, gravel or other aquarium decorations in an attempt to scratch the itch caused by the ick. Another symptom, though a little harder to diagnose, is heavy or rapid breathing. This can be the result of ick attacking the gills. But beware, it is possible that the rapid breathing may be caused by something other than ick."

I don't think so. It did have raggedy tail several months ago but I treated the tank with antifungal treatment.

if it was a reg goldfish bought at a pet store(as opposed to some fancy variety sold in a specialty place) then 3 years is about his life span. Many goldfish at pet stores...or won at fairs and such...are of the "feeder fish" variety. Mass bred and not well cared for before selling and therfore have a very short lifespan

yes, this one was purchased at the pet store (about 3 years ago) as a companion for the one she won at a fair. It's swimming around again but not normally. I don't know how to describe it but it's curled to it's side like a C. It's like curled swimming if that makes sense. I just removed the carbon filter and added treatment stuff. I don't want to ignore the problem but I really don't know what else to do.

but she's curled up laying on her side. She looks dead except for the gulping. And when she swims she's like upside down, on her side and doing roll overs. She seems very disoriented.

Great, so now I just have to wait for it to die? That sucks! Is this how goldfish normally go out?

she isnt having trouble staying at the bottom so thats a good sign fish that are dying float up because they dont have the strength to stay down

    that's reassuring KKD.

thanks CK. It sounds like the curling is not a good sign but I will still continue to treat it.

Now the other fish, Starfire, is totally checking out Starshine in the bottom corner. You don't think it will start nipping at it, do you?

Goldfish don't normally do that (nipping) See if he is always laying on the same side always. Prolly his swim bladder if so.

yes I've been doing a ton of googling and it does appear to possibly be swim bladder. I don't know if it's the same side...right now she's on her right side so I guess I'll just keep an eye on her. I was thinking of doing a partial water change. I wonder though if I should quarantine her and if doing a water change with her in the tank would be too traumatic. I could put her in a fish bowl (its all I have to put her in) but I don't have any gravel or anything to put in there...it would just be glass and water (and right now she's hiding under a plant).

Does anybody have any suggestions if I should put quarantine her in a fishbowl or keep her in the tank and do the water change? I'm sorry if my questions sound stupid I just really want to do everything I can (within reason, I'm not really comfortable injecting a needle into her swim bladder) to help her. At this point all I have done is removed the carbon filter and added some anti fungal treatment.

omg you guys this is soooo sad! Starfire is just hanging out in the corner right next to Starshine.

I really have NO idea, so take my suggestion with that in mind...I don't want to confuse matters with my ignorant advice.

That said, could it be an issue with oxygen levels in the water? Since fishies take up different amounts of oxygen depending on how they swim, maybe fishie is like "woah, there's too much oxygen, must be still" or something?

    I'm sorry to hear.

Plants are great, they add oxygen to the water. Prolly no use quarantining. Only do 20% water changes at a time to avoid shock. If ya want to "destress" him cover the bowl and make it dark for a while. I've been raising saltwater fish for years but its been a while since I had a goldfish tbh.

it might have a blocked swim bladder. this is the organ that makes fish boyant in the water and if it is laying on its side and not swiming properly it could be this.
it is basically like constipation in fish. it is also a sign of exhaustion.

i was able to revive a fish from swim bladder disorder by soaking the fish in epson salt - two teaspoons in a bucket of water. leave the fish in there for about 15-20 mins.

if the fish is exhausted it is good to separate the fish from the others so it can rest. you can buy a little baby fish square net nursery thing - they are really cheap and you hang it in the side of your tank and the fish can just lie on the bottom of the net and get its strength back.

^oh I missed this post last time. I may try this because the poor thing has taken a turn for the worse. Basically she can't even swim anymore, she's just curled up on the bottom of the tank. The other fish seems quite protective of her and it seems like he tries to nudge her. I didn't feed for several days and then fed them peas watching to make sure the sick one was able to feed. It's so sad watching her because she is stuck in this "C" position and if she misses the food on her first pass she has to go completely in a circle and try again on her second (or 3rd) pass around. *off to research the salt treatment*

I just added a tsp of epsom salt to the tank.
