    Default bodies.

ok, if anyone can help me out with any links, i'd appreaciate it!

i saw something on 20/20 about how the american production of bodies the exhibition gets thier bodies from china's prisoners of war.

the man who invented the process of preserving these bodies is really upset over it apparently.

    anyone help me? or input??

bullshit. people volunteer to be used for that. there is a huge waiting list to give your body up for plastination. like, you prolly wont get used because so many people want to.

    They use unclaimed bodies.

Roy Glover, spokesman for BODIES... The Exhibition, says its cadavers -- all from China -- did not come from willing donors.
"They're unclaimed," Glover says. "We don't hide from it, we address it right up front."
For that reason, many venues will not display BODIES... The Exhibition. Groups such as the Laogai Research Foundation, which documents human rights abuse in China, have charged that the category of unclaimed bodies in China includes executed political prisoners.
When BODIES... The Exhibition opened first in Tampa, Fla., last summer, the state anatomical board requested documentation proving the corpses were ethically obtained. Dr. Lynn Romrell, who chairs the board, says it got only a letter from the show's Chinese plastinator asserting that they were.
"He stated that none of the material came from criminal institutions or homes from the mentally insane. But just his word on that, no documents," Romrell says.

Glover said that everything in the exhibit was done legally, ethically and respectfully.

''We have legal documentation and representation which confirms that only the bodies of people who are deceased from natural causes have been included in the exhibition and have been acquired by legal means with the highest of ethical standards,'' Glover said. ``It is standard practice not only throughout Asia, but also here in the United States, for unclaimed and unidentified bodies to be offered to medical schools for education, the core of our exhibition.''

It's a very cool exhibit, I saw it last year.

What killed me about it was the fetal development room. That was tough to see....
I have a medical backround, so I was very interested in this exhibit and thought it was cool as hell. And yeah..all of them are asian. I noticed that, but never thought about where the bodies came from....

Right now, it's in Fort Lauderdale but I saw it last summer when it was in Washington DC. I thought it was very fasinating and would recommend it. As far as I remember, they were talking about how people volunteer their bodies for this and I don't remember seeing anything about the bodies being unclaimed and from China. In fact, I don't even remember the whole bodies even looking Asian since usually Asian people are smaller than the average American and more yellowed skinned unless they just used Asian organs and American whole bodies and didn't mention anything about it in the exhibit. They also had a perserved tattoo from a body and it was of a Native American woman. Personally, if I was from China, I probably wouldn't have a tattoo of a native from another country.

there are a couple different companies going around doing this.

I still have that episode DVRed!

The gist of it was: that one company (who used almost all asian bodies) was getting their bodies from unreputable sources, and yes, the original dude who invented plastination was upset about it's current incarnation.

They had a woman on giving an interview about that particular company, and how it was fishy because the traditional asian view of death was that the dead should be respected, and this was not the way to respect them, so the families of these people could not have been involved because they would never have allowed it.

Yea you're right. There's one in Milwaukee right now, and that was a discussion that we had. You have to donate your body, at least for that exihibit. They were very clear about that.

Granted, this is from Germany, where the paticular exhibit out here is from but it tells you the popularity of donating bodies.

I've seen the Bodies exhibit here at the Tropicana in Vegas. They also show you what smoking can do to your lungs and the stages of a fetus. I must admit I am easily creeped out so I couldn't look at some parts.

Is this the same as Gunther von Hagen's Bodyworld exhibits?

I highly recommend checking it out. The bodies are donated (they even have forms to sign up).

The creator of plastination is involved with 'Body Worlds', where all the bodies are supposedly donated; 'Bodies' is a competitor. So while I'm sure Von Hagen is genuinely concerned, I'd wager a lot of the brouhaha has more to do with PR than anything.

I saw Body Worlds 3 last year- freakin' amazing, loved it.

I'm so totally one of those who would love for my body to be used for something like that.

^Ah, I see. I didn't know there was another exhibit group.

I saw Body Worlds 3 too. I want to see the others eventually. And if you go, pony up for the audio tour!

Yes, they did come from China. They were "unlclaimed", meaning they were most likely unwilling prisoners. I saw the exhibit twice in Ft. Lauderdale.

I had a Chinese lady come up with a petition for me to sign about this very thing. Kind of turned me off from seeing it...

She means well but unfortunately, the Chinese government is very set in their ideas and rules with an iron fist when it come to human rights, or their lack thereof. Body parts are sold on the thriving black market from unwilling prisoners and doesn't look to be slowing down anytime soon.

I saw "World of Bodies" in China... Some of the (whole) bodies were Asian, some were not. There seemed to be a wide range of ethnicities represented. I can't say where they all came from, though. :-(

Bodyworlds is the originator if I remember correctly. I will do research. I believe he uses volunteers...that is why it can be shown in more places. I'll look into it soon to be more accurate.
I've heard bodyworlds is better...I can't say though because I haven't seen either. Bodyworlds is in Baltimore right now I think, and we plan on going to see it.
