WTF is the opening scene of DATBI all about? She makes a normal phone call then ends up crying for no apparent reason, then sings??!?
It doesn't help that my dvd has korean subtitiles lol.
Anyone that can explain that would be grand.

I've found that movie to be generally confused and confusing!
Weird. I was just thinking about this the other day. I have the impression she was calling a dude (possibly a family member? Doesn't she call him "Uncle" something?) with whom she'd had a relationship (possibly incestuous?) Then he asks her to sing -- "Amazing Grace" -- which is where the scene gets over-the-top.
Come to think of it, I also had the impression that the guy Stormy had the weird affair with was her brother. I think she refers to him that way at least once, but then she tries to seduce him. Very weird movie.

I think it was her brother.

i'm glad to know i'm not the only one who didn't quite "get" the movie
I think that was her brother.
I know the film was created through improvisation but i thought it was scripted from that improvisation, in the film it still seems improvised as they all talk over each other.
If the opening scene is about an incestuous relationship too wtf is wrong with these actors?

I'm betting both. That movie is chock-full of histrionic Hollywood actresses' ideas of "what stripping is like." Not that there aren't some crazy, tragic cases in the clubs, but gee whiz...two cases of incest, a pothead who tells the police she's a stripper in an attempt to get off a drug charge, a girl with self-esteem so low she can't even attend a poetry reading? Who are these chicks? Not to mention, they all apparently give blow-jobs for $100.![]()

WORD! This had great potential, I thought - but I truly wish that they could have balanced the cliched basket cases with some normal, relatively together types. Why not a few college students just, like, doing a job & getting by? Why not a single mom who manages the job without excessive stress & drama? Why not an uberstripper who takes it seriously as a career, acts responsibly, and is managing to rake in cash and invest it wisely? I mean, couldn't we have had even ONE dancer who danced, made money, liked it and lived a normal, healthy life?
And the implication that $100 blow jobs is standard for all dancers INFURIATED ME.
It's amazing to me that the woman responsible for this movie is also responsible for the chaste, sanitized pole-workout experience that is S Factor.
"Before I conceived you, I wanted you. Before you were born, I loved you. Before you were here an hour, I would die for you. This is the miracle of life." -- Maureen Hawkins
"I just can't get over how much babies cry. I really had no idea what I was getting into. To tell you the truth, I thought it would be more like getting a cat." -- Anne Lamott
Good grief...that scene was so retarded. I've NEVER, EVER had a manager tell me I had to work a certain day or else. If one did -- and the thing I wanted to do was really that important to me -- I'd go find another club to work at for two weeks until said manager forgot all about it.
At the end of the day, the film-makers seemed utterly convinced that all strippers are pathetic and firmly under the hell of The Man. The Whatsername has the nerve to start of S Factor and say stripping is "empowering."
I absolutely loved this movie! Except for the icky junkie stripper at the end.
I think I liked it because it was the first movie I saw when I first stared and I'm a bit nostalgic. I really liked the pole scenes and the special features in the dressing room. I do agree that it was a bit "odd", but then again a lot of people in our industry are.

The opening scence never made sense to me. Overall, I'm not a fan of the movie. The behind the scenes special feature is awesome though.
And everyone knows bjs are 200 bucks in the club.![]()
I have a warm spot in my heart for that movie just because its portrayal of drunk strippers on stage is so lovingly accurate.

I saw it for the first time tonite after wanting to see it for years and was kind of dissapointed... I mean, I understand that it was an artistic colaboration but it seemed to just have no plot...
As for the opening scene, what I got out of it was she called her uncle and he had molested her...remember cause she was all "No no, none of it matters" and he said he couldn't see her and this that and the next. I donno, that was just my take...

it was a very accurate film in affect, even if it was inaccurate in the details.
