The club I work at has had a new concept on Thursday Nights we have a live band play from midnight to 1 am(ish). I was wondering if anyone has ever come accross this in thier endevors??? I know that it has never happened around the area that I am and was just wondering if its a brand new idea??

It has been tried before...(If I'm not mistaken there was a thread a while back from someone in Portland? or nearabouts)...it apparently didn't go over too well. I have heard of other horror stories related to this (the "hey let's take the pretty wimmenz off the stage and put up some guys in tight spandex" concept)...none seemed to be very positive.

We did it for a few months on Thursday nights. The girls hated the music (though the band was very very good), the custies complained it was too loud, etc. It was REALLY loud, btw. Like holy shit that's loud type loud. I suppose it could work in certain situations, or maybe as an occasional thing. I'm fairly sure our attendance and sales went down considerably after the first couple of weeks. DJ-wise, it was annoying running a rotation with a band playing. Difficult to get girls up and/or switched, the songs were often ENTIRELY too long, etc. It's not a brand new idea. We didn't have the band onstage, though. I think PhillyDJ's weekend place does it on Saturdays sometimes. Ultimately, nope...not the best idea. I think often owners/managers try too hard to force some sort of cross-pollination to bring in new customers. "Hmmm. Tuesdays have been slow. Hey, People like ice cream! Let's try serving sundaes on Tuesday nights! In boob shaped glasses! Oh and hey! People like monkeys! Etc".

    Wow. That was very rambling.

Yeah we canceled them as well...I kept trying to turn them down on my mixer to no avail. And frankly its not a new idea as stripping was born in Vaudville with live bands playing for them (yeah and the girlie shows in Carnivals but that doesn't play to my point).

My two cents: I think it CAN work - as long as it's limited to one night, and preferably only part of the night (funny how Thursday seems to be the golden night - that's what it was at my club when they had it going for a while).

I'd add a catch to it, though: I think it worked at this club because it was based on multi-girl circuit stages (which I really have come to despise, but that's another topic). That way the DJ does NOT have to worry about rotating dancers every "three songs" or 12 minutes or so - it's one mob of girls for half an hour, then another, then another. DJ only has to interrupt every 30 minutes, in cooperation with the band. Know what I mean?

P.S. I would like a sundae in a boob-shaped glass. (Wasn't that a Nirvana hit on In Utero? "Boob-Shaped Glass"?)

I've played a few gigs at local gentlemen's clubs before. I don't think it works very well, at least it didn't in our case.

Setting up was a pain in the ass - hauling in speaker cabs, amps, drums, etc. Running through the club's PA, we were blisteringly loud, even when we weren't trying to be. Of course that's dependent on the size of the building, but at our best we were seriously overpowering for the size clubs we played. In between sets, we had girls and the manager/owner complaining that the songs we were playing were too long, even though we ran our set list by the owner a couple hours prior and he OK'd it. I think a lot of the dancers didn't really dig us, I know we cost them money.

There were a few Blues Brothers/chicken wire stage moments, too. Those were kinda scary. We had some problems with not getting paid, if the owner determined that we were a downer to his business.

There were times when it was a lot of fun though, very rock-starish, jamming away with girls dancing on stage around us. But I think at a club, music is best left to a DJ.

yeah the casa diablo club in portland had live music a month or so ago. I wouldn't have minded it if it were easier to dance to and not so freaking loud. oh yeah, and if the band's fans wouldn't just crowd around the stage and ignore the dancers. that's a big one.

Yeah I have seen it done a few times and I would rather slam my nuts in a car door than go through that hell again, dancers complaining, custies wondering wtf is going on??! LOL...ugh.

I much rather prefure the radio contests and promotion event style specials

I've always wanted to play a show at an SC. But then I realized I'd need to get a band together, and practice, and, well...I'm a little too lazy for that.

We did it at my club a few times. That is until a huge brawl broke out, incited by the band, and we had bouncers go to jail for trying to defend themselves, and the girls.

It also brought out too many women who, while they liked the band and it was ok to drool over them in front of their men, didn't have the same opinion when it came to the girls and their men.

    Hypocrites.

    *dies*

(i wish the girl shows were still around ... sniffle ... nekky girls and a single old man with a little piano ... awwww)

It can be difficult to make a recently single man pay for sex when he knows that a quick trip to the local watering hole would secure at least one hard drunken tumble for far less cash. It is even more difficult when he is something of a dead ringer for James Bond as played by Daniel Craig and possesses the sort of awkard charm and confidence that brands a man like him as a lady killer.

My old club used to have concerts with popular rock bands and rappers, but they stopped doing it before I ever started working there. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but I think whoever was performing got the main stage for a while, and the girls just worked the room. Supposedly big money nights for the waitresses and shot girls, but I never heard if the dancers did well..

I'm stunned there are still clubs that try this. I thought this sort of thing went out of style in the 70's.

The closest thing I could remember was a club in Lincoln, NE called the Royal Grove (now closed) that more or less doubled as both a SC and a music venue, although I don't ever recall them featuring both at the same time. The place was kind of weird because the strippers stopped at 8 PM on most nights, and they brought in the bands afterwards.

Okay, Here's the skinny now. After about 8 weeks of live bands and finally working out the small bugs that always seem to happen when you try something new, we have seen an increase in door revenue and a huge increase in bar sales. Also as the DJ that works those nights I have honestly seen an increase in tip outs on Thursday Nights. The dancers have the option to perform on the same stage as the band and kinda make it like a "real life music video." The crowd seems to make it rain and for that come from the "rock" crowd surprises me. I believe that since our city is a festuring portal for the underground rock music scene that they may have hit on something really good. I have picture up on my Myspace if you would want to check it out.
