    Default Ear Infection

So, after a combination of second hand smoke from work and allergies, I have a cute ear infection. It doesn't hurt except for a low, dull ouch if I stick a finger in my ear, but my sinuses are also blocked up. No fever (that I'm aware of). I don't have a doctor option since I'm not insured right now. Doctors are treating a great deal of ear infections with patience instead of antibiotics now, in the wake of antibiotic resistant bacteria, but I got to thinking. Are there alternative remedies to help with ear infections/sinus infections?

Stick a clove of garlic in your ear. With dental floss, so you can get it out.

You have a cute ear infection, lol?
You could try a few drops of colloidal silver in your ear. Lie on your side for 6 minutes if you can with it in there.
Take some vitamin C and magnesium. Drink lots of water (remember to take some salt with it)!
Slightly warm olive oil poured into the ear is a traditional remedy for ear ache but Im not sure about infection - Be really careful about heating it though, an inner ear burn doesnt sound like fun. Plus you should always be VERY cautious about putting anything inside your ears at all.
Hope youre rid of it soon!

A hot water bottle always feels really good to me. I give my daughter drops for hers, they are garlic and mullien (I don't even know what that is) in an oil. I heard you can make your own with olive oil. You warm the oil and use a dropper to get it in the ear.

Sorry you have one, they hurt!

No no, cute was intentional, with a large dose of sarcasm.

Yeah, just stick it in there whole. I've never had an ear infection, so I've never done it, but that's what people do:

Alternately, you could make garlic oil, like holiday said. Just make some olive oil very warm, throw in chopped garlic, turn the heat off, cover, and wait a few hours.

I just got over an ear infection. I did go to the doctor because I could; but 3-4 drops of peroxide 3 to 4 times a day in the infected ear will kill the infection in about a week.

If you don't have an ear dropper, pour some peroxide in the cap of the bottle and take a Q-tip to the cap. Let it over-saturate so when you put it over your ear, the liquid will drop into the ear. Once the peroxide hits the infection inside of the ear, it will be cold and will bubble and foam up. This creates quite a sensation that I can't say is pleasant, I'll warn you. Leave your head tilted for a minute or two, put a cotton ball over the ear before becoming upright and the ear will drain. It'll be gross at first but after a few days the drain should go clear in color.

My doc had me do this in tandem w/ the antibiotics. However...if you don't get relief from this and some of the other SW recommendations, it is important to get to the doctor somehow. I've preforated my eardrum from waiting too long and trust me, you don't want that to happen. Good luck!

I use minced garlic in olive oil. Let the garlic soak in the (gently heated...not boiled) olive oil for a few hours and with a dropper, put a few drops in your ear. Lay down in a hot bath with a hot, wet towel over your face. The heat will help everything open up and garlic is a natural antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral remedy.

If it gets really bad, you can always take a dose of benedryl (ear infections happen when the eustacian tubes become plugged and don't drain, which is why people usually get an ear ache/infection after a head cold). The Benedryl will open up the sinuses, etc and help everything drain. Use the garlic oil drops still, though. I would advise only using benedryl as a last resort.

Also, invest in a neti pot. Using the neti pot daily for the past several years has kept away the sinus infections and ear infections. I highly, highly recommend the neti pot.

    Hope you feel better soon!!

ETA: Look at removing dairy from your diet for a week or so. Dairy causes the body to make excess mucous which can contribute to ear aches/infections.
