You are positive it's a black widow? Red hourglass and spot in a messy looking web? Keep in mind the Black Widow has some imitators.
Definitely kill it immediately---before it finds a hiding spot.
Dealt with those bitches in both Arizona AND Tennessee, along with Brown Recluses. Not cool.
Brown Recluses are also imposters for Black Widows. But of course, the only way you are going to find out is after you kill it. Flip it over, and you'll see the red on the belly.

I recommend a direct shot of spider poison. I'm actually surprised you found one. They tend to be pretty good at hiding.
I'm glad you didn't find a brown recluse. Fuckers are aggressive.

Oh, and keep your pets OUT of the garage. Where they is one, you can find more. They live for dark, moist places. Not scaring you, but merely making you aware of this possibility.
Totally, SS. I've seen what those Bitches can do. Years ago, a friend got really sick and was admitted to the Hospital for a really high fever. He had a mark on his cheek, but they really didn't associate it with the fever. After about a day, the mark on his cheek started darkening. Next thing ya know, a few days later, it had started to rot---in a perfect circle. It was pretty nasty, especially when it was in the final stages of "rotting" off his face, it was kinda just hanging there barely attached to the rest of his skin.
I don't play around with either of those two spiders. They die, without a thought.
Thank u. Not a hundred percent sure but it looks like the pictures on the internet and it has a messy web. Good call about not letting the animals go into the garage- my dog would TOTALLY mess with it if she found it.
It is a BIG huge spider and I am afraid it won't die if I try to kill it and it will still bite me. I don't want to deal with it tonight so I am going to figure out what to do tomorrow...

If you're afraid of it getting to you while you try to kill it, you could try an exterminator. They might be expensive though - I don't know. It might not be a bad idea if there could be more!
If you are gonna attack it yourself, I'd go armed with a really long fly swatter and a can of Raid. Spray it until it drowns.
That is totally freaky. I would be spazzing if I found one of those. -shivers-
A shoe will do as well...don't be afraid - it isn't going to jump in mid air and attack you...make sure to take down the web as well...

I'd leave it alone, but then again, I'm Australian and used to little things with big poison so I'm sure my opinion is useless here.
Try not to stress and don't let it suffer, then you keep your sanity and karma intact. Yay.
XXXS

I like Black Widows... as long as they're not in my house or on me! They're mysterious, and kind of pretty. From afar, that is.![]()

eh, im from florida, so i've been around a billion spiders.
if it IS a black widow.. then you definitely need to kill it.
but i wouldn't be worried about it "getting you" in the process. it's not like they fly.as long as you stay a safe distant from it while spraying it, you'll be fine.
also, call an exterminator ... because when there's one.. there's more than one.
Exactly. In Arizona I started getting the house sprayed every month shortly after we bought it. I'd found one in my eldest Daughter's crib. Wasn't about to chance finding another one.
Not only do they like dark damp places, but they love wood as well. I remember the exterminator checking the awnings and other places that I wouldn't have even thought of.
:runs in a circle, screaming!:
Please be careful! I'm with everyone else who said you should call an exterminator asap. Let the professionals worry about it, and especially make sure that there is only the one.
Again, it cant fly to the air and attack you lol. Get a high powered spray can of raid or some such shit (go to Vons and ask they always know lol) and spray from 5 feet away. SPray the wholecan on it and then knock the web down with a broom. Call an exterminator no matter how much it costs cause there are never just one, and that shit sucks. Oh wear long pants and closed toed shoes and a long sleeve shirt in the process....

Exterminator: If there's a possibility that it can kill you, why deal with it yourself?
Well the only reason I say kill it yourself is if you go back the next morning and can't find it...then you got to worry about where it is and then you got to make sure your pets don't go by the area...its a big hassle...
hopefully she just killed it..

^^^ Black Widows rarely kill unless in the case of youth, advanced age, or allergy.

If it's big it's probably not a black widow. They're small and shy. I used to catch them with my dad when we lived down south. The local college paid about $5 per spider.
I have not killed it yet and now its hiding. Hopefully its going to get taken care of it this afternoon. I have seen a brown recluse spider here too, but not in the house. And I am SO GRATEFUL for all the advice like keeping the animals away and exterminating cuz there could be more. Thank you... :.(
