Default Baby with two faces worshipped as goddess

SAINI SUNPURA, India (AP) -- A baby with two faces was born in a northern Indian village, where she is doing well and is being worshipped as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, her father said Tuesday.
    art.LALI.TWO.jpg

Lali has a rare condition known as craniofacial duplication, where a single head has two faces.

The baby, Lali, apparently has an extremely rare condition known as craniofacial duplication, where a single head has two faces. Except for her ears, all of Lali's facial features are duplicated -- she has two noses, two pairs of lips and two pairs of eyes.

"My daughter is fine -- like any other child," said Vinod Singh, 23, a poor farm worker.

Lali has caused a sensation in the dusty village of Saini Sunpura, 25 miles east of New Delhi. When she left the hospital, eight hours after a normal delivery on March 11, she was swarmed by villagers, said Sabir Ali, the director of Saifi Hospital.

"She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time," Ali said.

Rural India is deeply superstitious and the little girl is being hailed as a return of the Hindu goddess of valor, Durga, a fiery deity traditionally depicted with three eyes and many arms.

Up to 100 people have been visiting Lali at her home every day to touch her feet out of respect, offer money and receive blessings, Singh told AP.

"Lali is God's gift to us," said Jaipal Singh, a member of the local village council. "She has brought fame to our village."

Village chief Daulat Ram said he planned to build a temple to Durga in the village.

"I am writing to the state government to provide money to build the temple and help the parents look after their daughter," Ram said.

Lali's condition is often linked to serious health complications, but the doctor said she was doing well.

"She is leading a normal life with no breathing difficulties," said Ali, adding that he saw no need for surgery.

Lali's parents were married in February 2007. Lali is their first child.

Singh said he took his daughter to a hospital in New Delhi where doctors suggested a CT scan to determine whether her internal organs were normal, but Singh said he felt it was unnecessary.

"I don't feel the need of that at this stage as my daughter is behaving like a normal child, posing no problems," he said.

WOW.. I don't have any words to describe this!!

I have seen that deformaty in animals (cats, pigs etc) and non viable human fetuses but never a living, breathing person before. I hope she can live a good long life. It's probably a good thing she was born into a culture where they see her as a goddess instead of a monster!

How come all the weird shit goes down in India? Wasn't there a thread about a little girl with four arms and four legs that's Indian too?

Anyways, that being said, that little girl is awfully cute. I hope she has a wonderful life with her understanding culture.

She is really adorable. I hope that she can live a viable life and there are no complications. In a lot of third world countries there is an increase in birth defects due to the fact there are no "rules" and regulations to how chemicals and and industrial wastes are handled. A lot of time(s) women are working while pregnant along side dangerous chemicals and waste. Also, water systems aren't purified like they are here. India has horrible water conditions. There is a reason they say "Don't drink the water!".

Humph well I know there are women and men that grew up with literally two heads. But she has two faces. Only time will tell. I'd assume no. I think one side will be more dom. then the other. Since they've not had a CAT scan it's hard to say how their brain actually developed.

My boyfriend is hindu, was raised in temple communities, and he says that it doesn't make any sense that these babies (this one and the one named lakshmi with 4 legs) that are being born in india are being worshipped, because according to the vedas, if a god is reincarnated as human, he/she would be the most perfect form possible, not a mutated form like these babies.

I feel bad for them and I think it's a result of pollution, mutated dna, bad karma and inadequate healthcare.

    ^I completely agree with you.
However, if it betters the quality of their life I'm all for it. Like another poster said, it's better that they are considered something other than a monster.

So true. Kids in North America are absolutely awful to each other in the best of circumstances. I'm so happy that this little muffin will grow up being treated as the lovely person I'm sure she'll become. It'll be an interesting story to follow, that's for sure.

I would absolutely LOVE to do a healthcare volunteer exchange in rural India. They have two week programs and they're pretty cheap; just airfare. I'll be able to swing two weeks once Ash is a little bit older...next winter probably. Anyone wanna come with me? Seriously. I'm dead serious here. I wanna go. My friend went on exchange to Tibet and actually got to stitch a woman up after her cesarean. She said it was the most amazing thing she'd ever seen or done.

Wow, the crazy thing about it to me is that the head is huge, and the mother birthed her naturally.

you go girl! That's so amazing.

to the best of my knowledge- doing stitches is pretty easy, if you can sew. The incision is the hear part.

I do this!! Not in India but Cambodia, Narobi and China There are NO requirements other than you have to get your round of shots and have a passport.

Most of the time in working in the hospitals or camps you just hand out meds to the children, elderly and HIV patients. Also you help build schools and shelters. It's really whatever job they give you. There are rarely luke warm showers (usually you get a shower every 3 days.) They feed you 3 meals a day. You are given either a tent, or a hotel room. Sometimes you even stay with different families. Depends on the team you are with.

Also it's incredibly dangerous because you go to areas that aren't built up. Roads that vehicles can't travel etc, so you have to hike and walk. The buses tend to wreck. To find out how to travel safe in these areas pick up "the worlds most dangerous places" books. I highly recommend NOT going to these areas unless you've read these books.

Also, side note if you decide to do this understand you should get kidnapping insurance. Yes it exists. It does happen a lot in places like Peru and Brazil. They will post your ransom and make sure you are picked up.

Volunteer vacations is where I book through. I do NOT do anything through the red cross. (don't get me started on that rant)

Are you ready to see people who tie off one of their kids' arms because an armless child gets better begging wages?

The opportunities for help there are unbounded. The opportunities for shock are, too.

^ Your welcome. Shots are important if not vital. Trust me the shots suck really bad. Although getting Hep would suck a lot more. I usually feel like shit for a few days after my rounds. Headache and the runs. Blech. Nothing advil and imodium can't solve though.

And as Jay said, there are a lot of situations and stuff you will see that will break your heart. Doing this is heartbreaking and humbling all at the same time. Although you are there to do a LOT of good, be aware you are still likely to be robbed or conned. That's why it is so important to do research about the places you are going to visit.

I never saw any pan handling where I was. I've been in several countries and cities. I've always been in the areas that tourists NEVER venture to. The only people that ever go there that are Americans or British are game hunters. (Adventures club)

I don't work along side redcross or the united way. (which are usually in areas that tourists will go into) You will see panhandlers there among other things.

The most and worst I've seen, which is absolute typical in these places .. were babies born with HIV and 12 year old girls having babies who had full blown AIDS and were victims of rape from civil wars etc. Men in Kenya etc believe that they can cure their HIV by having sex with a virgin. Hence the number of rapes and babies being born with it.

I cant really imagine what it would be like to be confronted with all of that. I found it hard enough to visit Mexico for 2 days! But, I think it would be a worthy life changing experience and I think I could feel slightly better about it going in to do something good rather than visiting as a tourist.

Anyway thank you so much for sharing what you have, I guess we should stop the thread jack though

    True ^

I truly believe we are very fortunate to make the money that we do. It's a shame that many of us don't give back or use it to help others in need. Of course tend to your needs first, but instead of Gucci (not that I don't own a few Gucci bags) and expensive denim you can take and go on a volunteer vacation What you will get back is life changing and educational. The knowledge you can bring back to others is priceless, and the lives you will give a glimmer of help and hope to ..priceless as well.

Americans are gluttons. We just are. It's a bubble here. More people should venture to the off the beaten paths in the world. Expand expand expand.

She's in med school now, but she was still a general science student when she went. They're so grateful to have an extra set of hands in those hospitals that they're willing to teach you pretty much anything. After all, most of their doctors aren't really doctors anyway.

That's EXACTLY it. My man wants to take a holiday this winter coming up and I'm trying to convince him to do a volunteer vacation. It seems like such a waste of a trip to travel so far and just lay on a beach doing nothing. Plus, it looks killer on a resume.

Oh, and the site I was looking at was www.crossculturalsolutions.org . There's actually a better one then that but I can't find it now. I remember seeing a two week trip for really cheap. *scratches noodle* I'll hunt for it and then come back if I can find it.
