    Default Question about makeup/beauty schools

I'm posting in Body Business because so many of you girls know about the makeup stuff so I hope someone can help me.
I had this crazy idea to become a makeup artist, I mean I have close to 10 years of experience of doing my own makeup, and I'm not talking about every day makeup, and for the past year I became a MAC addict. I dont know where I want to work in the future, I just want something to be able to slowly get into while I'm getting out of the adult industry.

So my question is what do I have to do to become a makeup artist and maybe get into skin care too. Schools, courses?

    Thanks !!!!

Any idea of what area of makeup you want to lean towards? Bridal? Print? Video? Runway? Special FX?

Major differences in the education you will need for each of these. Schooling isn't necessary in all cases. The first thing I'd suggest is realizing that MAC is not what most working makeup artists use. Its a consumer quality brand advertised and tarted up as such. Sure some may use a bit of it but I'd definitely avoid becoming a MAC addict if you are serious about makeup. (Wow, I sound so bitter hehe.) Yes, it was originally a fabulous brand until Estee Lauder changed the formulations when they purchased the company in 2001 to increase their profits.

http://www.mud.edu/ is one of the best schools for makeup imo. They have different length courses and all types of specialties.
http://www.joeblasco.com/blascoschools/index.htm is supposedly top notch but I don't know too much about it. I think there is one in Orlando which is near you.

However, there is a great alternative to all these. You are going to be working your ass off for low pay, making connections and trying to get tear sheets for a few years anyways so an expensive makeup school isn't going to pay off for a loooong time. One of my friends, whom has actually become pretty successful at makeup, started by assisting makeup artists for free or very cheaply. He specializes in mostly special FX but it seems like it would work with bridal, print, and film too. (I can't speak from experience about fashion and runway. I've never dealt with those industries personally.) Anyways, a few times he also paid better known working artists their half-day rate (several hundred dollars) to give him crash courses in how they do makeup. This served two purposes, he learned new techniques and when they needed an assistant on something they called him since they had already trained him. Eventually he got some work on his own, a bunch of tear sheets, and 3 or 4 years later hes doing pretty well doing makeup on several TV series. I don't think a pricey degree from a makeup school really means much. Its how good/fast you are and what connections you make.

Thanks AmazingKat, I would mainly be interested in Bridal makeup, since there is nothing else near where I live, I cant relocate or travel, We are starting a family and the area where we live is perfect for us but not much else going on, just a lot of weddings and events.
I'm sick of making up stupid stories when people ask me what I do for work and when I get pregnant and have a kid I think thats it for me, no more getting naked, I will be too old anyways. Thats why I'm trying to figure out what I should do, it wont be something to support the whole family on, hubby has a job but I need something for myself, dont feel like going back to retail, thats why I had the makeup artist idea.

I personally know nothing about the bridal makeup since my experience is totally from the print/film side of things but I totally wouldn't go to school for it. You might be able to find a place that teaches a crash course on bridal makeup that will help you with a few of the basics, how to make makeup last all day and how to set up business etc. I see those all the time but I don't know if its just an LA thing, weddings aren't LA specific is what makes me think you could find one local.

I'd just start practicing and putting together a really awesome portfolio/web site. I'd try to make contacts with as many other people in the wedding industry as possible (DJs/Photogs/Caterers/dress shops) and work to refer each other to whomever you find. You could probably advertise in bridal publications or set up a booth at local bridal conventions offering info and free trials. I looked into doing bridal makeup at one point on the weekends for extra cash and it seems like most people work on referrals from other industry people or from friends who have used the artist before. Like I said, I've never actually done bridal makeup and I'm sure someone in the industry could give you a more accurate perspective but either way I don't think makeup school is necessary.

http://inmykit.com/ is one of my favorite sites for a few suggestions about what to include in your kit.

I know MAC has a class they offer in NYC. I heard it was around 1K and that includes the make-up. I go to Aveda cosmetology school. Aveda also offers an esthetician program. Aveda is pretty strict but it's a 5 month program. You learn skincare which includes facials and body wraps, all different types of waxing and make-up. Although Aveda is strict I think it's a good education and name.
