    Default Capoeira

After a few months of Takewando lessons I decided to move on from it.

As much as I was enjoying the martial arts, it just wasn't totally "me".

So I was informed about Capoeira recently. Did my first class last night.

I plan to go back for more.. I have "the hunger" for it. It seems to "fit" me more.. martial arts (so i can 'kick butt') that is fun.. and has a 'dance' element to it! I've also been told that my previous training in Samba etc will be of benefit... I've always had an affinity for Brazil.

Going to the Carnivale is on my "must do before I die" list..

It isn't like my Takewando lessons are a waste of time... I can defend myself pretty damn well now. I know how to punch, kick and "drop" someone now.. and will continue practicing the basics as I don't want to loose what I learnt (as it is invaluable in defense).

Anyone else have any experiences with Capoeira?

    Yup, I do!

I've taken Capoeira lessons off and on for a year or two. In fact, for my first batizado I tested with the guy from Only the Strong. Damn he's hot...

Anywho, it's a really great art form, and it'll kick your ass. Have fun!

I've only dabbled, but had a great time with it.

sxybrat, I demand a demo when next we meet.

A few years a go my school entered a national competition usin the story of capoeira as the basis for our performance (we won, booyah!)... It was fantastic, the moves are amazing and when you see the real experts in action, well... wow...

I'm so envious! They have classes at my local but I can't go yet because I have to work most evenings (market research, yay..) at the moment

Yep, similar to you Beauty. I had a Modern teacher in college who was from brazil and would do a lot of capeoria moves in her classes... the side handstands and jumps up from the ground and the like. Super fun!! I would love to take a real class sometime....

I only JUST learnt the ginga .. so yeah.. brand spanking new here.

Tho' there was one combo involving the ginga (naturally) that involved a side carwheel.. I learnt that my left side cartwheel kicks ass whereas my other one didn't.. haha.

Those combinations are .. well.. challenging that I'm learning... and no way am I going to partake of the circle yet.. hell no! hahaha.

Get yer ass in the circle! Seriously! The roda is one of the best ways to learn, and the more experienced members will go slow to help you. The roda is why you study everything else. Do it dammit!

Funnily enough, when I told them I knew Samba and such .. and did a quick little demo... they totally were like "You can use that in Capoeira.. that's awesome!" hahaha

So I'll do the ginga mixed with some samba and shake my booty!

MsQ - see my second post: http://www.zambiacongo.com.au/

Just catch the bus down GC Highway, get off near the petrol station next to Pacific Ave.. and I could easily pick you up on the way so you don't walk down the street to the class by yourself or something? It's inexpensive to do if you opt for the 10 classes for 100 deal. Plus you don't have to turn up each and every week, the pre-paid classes "voucher" you purchased lasts for 2 months. Casually it is $13 a class.

They have classes in Miami every Mon, Wed, Thur as per the website. It seems to be the main school as Southport only has Mon classes.

What I liked most is how welcoming they all were... I totally felt nervous being a total newb there and unfamiliar with everyone however they were totally okay with that!

I didn't partake of the Southport roda... and I understand now what you mean sxybrat.. they are meant to go slow and "down to my level" thus making it more even... I'm just "scared" to make a food of myself... tho' at the same time.. I guess that's the whole point of the roda at the end of the class.

Okay. I'm going to the Miami class this Wednesday... so MsQ the first class is free... so you might want to come along and try it out!

    It's such a good workout!

Learnt a few of the basic kicks today... forget their names. I'll eventually learn their names... lol!

Can GCG or anyone else explain more what is involved? I looked it up and saw some youtube videos but was wondering what do u do in the classes? Is it good cardio fitness? Like do u work up a sweat?

I want to learn some form of dancing and it's out of this and hip hop at the moment. They are both taught at the same school so i guess i could try both. But I like to know a bit about things before I start coz I get nervous.

This isn't dancing, it is a form of martial art that incorporates music and gymnastics.

It is good cardio as well as good strength training as well. I can't tell you how many push ups and sit ups I did! ARGH! Tho' totally utterly worth it!

I personally have not done it now in a few weeks as I had to stop because I couldn't afford the petrol costs (and still can't) going to/from the classes in Miami.

I liked doing it because it 'flowed' and it was kinda dancing-like compared to how 'boring' (to me) takewando was... I like the music, I like the gymnastics and I like how it flows from one move to another.

When I get back on my financial feet again I will be going back

I've always wondered how capoeira compared to krava maga. I have a burning desire to master krav maga but I need to move somewhere where there's an instructor.

That sounds great. I have a gymnastics background so anything that incorporates gymnastic moves is always fun for me.
