Default What's affecting Dvd playing on my compy?

Okay compu-people, can you help? I don't have a tv, so I play my netflix and stuff on the computer, but it's SO often choppy and freezes up, depending on the disc. What do I need to do to fix this? (Please don't suggest a new comp or reaaaallly expensive stuff-I was going to get a new laptop, but financial stuff's been insane.)

    Compy stats: 36-24-36 J/k

2.0 Ghz AMD Athalon processor (64X2 dual core proc. 3800+)
    1.25 G of RAM
    XP
Trying to find out what sort of video card-where do I look for this? I know it's Nvidia, but I can't find the specs.

    TIA!

Oh man this is not going to be helpful at all, but my anal retentiveness won't let it go.

It should be "effecting" in the thread title. Unless your computer is having deep emotional issues.

OK, I'll stop being an ass.

Personally, cleaning the DVD usually works for me. Also check if the DVD has a thousand scratches on the back. I would doubt it has anything to do with the video. The most common problem is with the DVD or DVD player. If possible maybe update the DVD drivers. I bought a cheap DVD burner for $40 so if it really is a big problem you should be able to buy an internal DVD player for a computer for even less (not for laptops though). They also sell DVD/CD cleaner discs but don't know anything about them. Once when trying to fix an old DVD payer I cleaned the lens with rubbing alcohol and qtip.

It also could be the disc reader in your computer. There are DVDs you can play to clean the eye, at least for your DVD player there are and I would assume something similar being used for a computer.

1: Anti-virus program--usually, the active "guard" part of the program is scanning each bit as it comes off of the DVD, and it checks against increasinly complex lists of criteria. 2: Screen resolution--DVD's were originally set to play at 800x600 resolution. See if making your screen display fewer dots will help. 3: Virtual memory--one of the consequences of having a lot of RAM is that the computer makes a big virtual memory file on the hard drive for it, and then has to keep scanning the whole thing to see if the next bit of data is in there before looking to the DVD drive. 4: Networking--make sure that you aren't constantly scanning for wireless or other networks, because all of the updates going on in the background get in the way. Also, don't try to 'share' the DVD drive when you're watching the film. 5: Try a different program for viewing. I like PowerDVD on a windows computer, over Media Player. I never much liked Quicktime's function on a Mac, but I still have mostly System 9 stuff, so I'd have to see what's going on since 1998. 6: Make sure that you have cleaned out any spyware that could just be running. 7: Stop or get rid of any of the constantly updating applications, like weather monitors, Yahoo/MSN messenger, bittorrent downloaders, etc.

Let me know if any of those help.

What's the application your DVD player is using?

Has it always acted this way?

If PowerDVD/Nero Showtime make sure your DVDRom is set to DMA (some are set to PIO)

Also, Go to Start > Run and type in taskmgr THEN hit enter, When Task Manager comes up click on the "Performance" tab, and then play your DVD. Watch the processor graph. Does it spike when the DVD Skips?

Finally, when the DVD skips, or even while playing, do you hear the hard drive grinding like it does when you're opening up a program? Is it constant?

This is a great reference site for such issues:

As to the original topic, does this problem occur with new, scratch free discs? If it's a software issue, you may want to try VLC as your player.

If your DVD drive just doesn't like Netflix discs, one possible solution might be to temporarily copy the movie to your hard drive, then delete it when you're done.

Are you running any other applications that might be effecting the performance of your computer?

Are you running on battery or is your power supply plugged in to the wall?
