Default Keeping healthy when working in smoky extremely active environment

I'm working at a new club where there's TONS of dancing, and I'm not used to it at all. I'm used to going up on stage every 30 minutes, usually every 45 because there's so many girls.

This club, I'm on stage for 10 minutes, off for 10, on, off, on, off.. etc. You get the point. so for a four hour shift, it's 2 hours straight of dancing!! I guess I'm just not in very good shape.

I'm about to leave to go work a 10-2 shift, after I just worked one last night, I usually don't even do consecutive days when I'm working at the other clubs that aren't as stage intensive. I am SO sore, my throat hurts from the smoke, and I just feel weak all over like I need to sleep. I've already taken like 4,000 mg of vitamin C, ginger tea, echinacea, all that immune system boosting.

Is there anything else I can take or is it just a matter of getting my body used to all the physical activity mixed with the smoke? The smoke makes it worse I think, definitely. I CANNOT WAIT until the smoking ban passes, it will make working so much healthier.

That is an unholy amount of dancing. I'd need a lot of rest/recovery time to pull that off and I consider myself to be in decent shape. There's probably not any kind of magical pill you can take that will make it any easier, unless you want to develop some type of amphetamine habit, which I'm hoping you don't.

Maybe mess around with your schedule a bit and see how many days you can afford to take off if you work the shit out of the shifts you do take.

Gah second hand smoke! All the advice I can give is eat the things that fight off free radicals like blueberries n such. Good thing there that smoking ban will pass soon. That such a terrible environment to work in.

Oh yea too much vitamin C might cause diarrhea.

I'd cut your Vitamin C back to 1,000 mg a day. 4,000 IMO is way too much. Add in a daily multi and start drinking Dan Active, which is found in the yogurt section.

I only take 1,000 mg Vit C, a daily, and a Dan Active everyday. I used to get sick A LOT till I started that routine and I haven't gotten sick since.

This is exactly how dancing is at my club, except ours is 15 minutes up and 15 minutes down. The smoke kills me too

Anyway, keep yourself super hydrated. Get some throat drops to help with the scratchiness. Eat bananas and a decent amount of protein, and take hot baths.

You will get used to it, but it'll take a couple weeks. Also, you could try toning down your stage routine a bit for the first week or two to keep yourself from being too exhausted.

Apparently a smoking ban was passed in Austin but bars protested. MY club is on the "support smoking" list. Yay. I hope your smoking ban doesn't have exceptions like mine.

My throat hurts after working too. Honestly, I haven't found anything that helps. Drink a bunch of water seems to help, or at least let me hack up some dirty flem, I know gross, but true.

Guaifenesin (sold as Mucinex) makes it easier to cough up schluck, and so does licorice tea. Gotta drink a lot of water with either.

When I was working at stage-heavy clubs in PDX I drank water CONSTANTLY, and I can't imagine working like this without the water, I'd get so sick! I would get through 2 pitchers of water each shift and carry a pitcher and straw with me constantly.

Got some weird looks, but it was worth it both for my health and for not having to spend half my downtime getting refills on one of those puny glasses that would only last about 30 min- 1 hour given how dehydrating the work was.

Ugh. The smoke kills me too. It was even worse where I used to bartend...regardless:

Water, water, water. I also used to gargle with salt water when I got home to kill off any infection. When your throat is constantly sore from the smoke and irritated, infection can happen.

As for the massive amounts of dancing, if you're brusing you should try arnica tablets. They help out a lot with bruising and soreness.

I can't take dan active because I'm vegan, but there is soy yogurt and kombucha... those have active live cultures right??

    so pretty much I should:

    drink tons of water
    gargle with salt water
use arnica for all the bruising ( i have soooo many!!!!)
    take rest days in between

I already eat super healthy and take a multivitamin... so these are the four things I'm going to have to work on/remember to do.

I am absolutely exhausted after this second shift. I cannot work consecutive days at this club until my body gets used to it. My left hamstring feels like it's a little strained, my knees are swollen and bruised, but hey,, I made over 1400 in 12 hours total this week- so that's worth it right??

All of the above, and especially rest on your days off so your body is able to recuperate and rebuild itself.

Also the part about taking hot baths or getting in a sauna for 10 or 15 minutes. I learned recently that raising your body temperature for short periods of time kills viruses and boosts your immunity. I thought that was pretty interesting.

I believe Stoneyfield farms has an active culture soy yougurt, if you have that brand out there. I can't do a lot of soy, but I have heard it's comparable (tastewise) to its yummy cow counterpart.

Water is definitely your friend. I'm always really rundown after a shift at a smoking club but it's not as bad if I carry around a huge bottle of water and just keep sucking it down. Ginger and lemon help a lot too, sometimes after work I'll make ginger tea with lemon juice, or get the Trader Joe's Lemon Ginger Echnicea Juice. It helps.

I can't wait for the smoking ban either. CAN'T WAIT. Wish some other clubs would join the "Why Wait" campaign and go nonsmoking sooner, because this smoke fucking BLOWS.

All of the soy yogurts have live cultures. All the dairy yogurt have live cultures. That's what makes it yogurt. For some reason companies have started using this "live" thing as a marketing gimmick. It's like trying to sell "wet water".

You can also get arnica as a salve you can put on bruises. The stuff is seriously amazing. I know for sure they have it at New Seasons, I'll bet most of the other health food stores carry it too.

Drink water. I started drinking 64oz of water a day and I have more energy and my skin looks great (not all tired and gross).

Take that Emergen-C stuff. If you haven't seen the commercials, they're packets of flavored vitamin powder stuff that you mix with water or juice. They're awesome, I drink a glass before work for a natural energy boost.

Enviga tea is great, and helps you burn fat.

Forget Atkins. Carbs are GOOD!!!! I mean whole grains and stuff like that. The idea is, the fewer processes the carb had to go through to get to you, the better.

    One word- Calcium

Other than that, get plenty of rest and do yoga on your off days.

...Actually, some yogurts pre-packaged for long shelf stability are cultured and then killed off, I believe.

You probably won't find this problem most places in Portland, though. This is generally only the case with cheap store-brands, if you're in a major city.

Weird. I've never come across this "heat-treated" yogurt. Pointless, isn't it? I know all the soy yogurts I eat (Silk, Stoneyfield, Trader Joe's) advertise live cultures on the side.
