    i'm on day 3 of a really strict atkins diet. i've basically eaten no carbs at all, and just a heap of raw vegetables and steak, and a bit of cheese here and there. drinking a fuckload of water.

    is it common to get really bad diarrhea at this point? seriously... it's like liquid. i don't have stomach cramps or anything and it's not painful. also even before the diarrhea started, it seems like there's more coming out than going in! my stomach is super flat. i haven't taken any laxatives or anything like that.

    how can you tell when you've gone into ketosis? i wouldn't have yet cos it's too early, but is there a way of being able to tell?

    Not sure about the diarrhea. I haven't heard it's common with atkins, but I do know too many veggies can cause it (and I mean alot of veggies).
    Some stores sell ketosis strips, evidently. I think you put em on your tongue and they turn a certain color if you're in ketosis, and a dif color if you're not. i also heard your breath starts to smell like lead when you're in ketosis or something.

    Ketone urine-testing strips, also called Ketostix or just ketone sticks ... are small plastic strips that have a little absorptive pad on the end. This contains a special chemical that will change colour in the presence of ketones in the urine. The strips may change varying shades of pink to purple, or may not change colour at all. The container will have a scale on the label, with blocks of colour for you to compare the strip after a certain time lapse, usually 15 seconds. Most folks simply hold a strip in the flow of urine. Other folks argue that the force of the flow can "wash" some of the chemical away, and advise that a sample of urine be obtained in a cup or other container, then the strip dipped into it.

    The chemical reagent is very sensitive to moisture, including what's in the air. It's important to keep the lid of the container tightly closed at all times, except for when you're getting a strip to take a reading. Make sure your fingers are dry before you go digging in! They also have an expiry date, so make note of this when you purchase the strips ... that's for the UNopened package. Once opened, they have a shelf-life of about 6 months -- you may wish to write the date you opened on the label for future reference.

    Ketone test strips can be purchased at any pharmacy, and are usually kept with the diabetic supplies. In some stores they're kept behind the counter, so if you don't see them on the shelf, just ask the pharmacist; you don't need a prescription to buy them.

    It's probably all the water. Liquid in, liquid out, after all. I've cured constipation by gorging on water, and it does have a liquifying effect on your number twos. Maybe just cut back a little on the water and see if it clears up.

    The diarrhea is common in the beginning with ketogenic diets in carb sensitive people.

    You'll need the sticks to test it accurately, they are cheap.

    is it bad that i'm kinda liking it because it's making my tummy soooo flat. i feel so thin right now hah.

    i swear to god, once this photo shoot is over i am DONE eating crappy foods. once i get through this shoot i am going to be all about healthy eating and calorie control, no more fucking pizza and burgers and chips. because i never want to be caught in this kind of stressful situation again where i'm on a shitty diet to try to get in shape for an event that's been sprung on me!

    yeeee!!! i got the test strips and i've started going into ketosis already, and i'm only on day 4!

    right now i'm eating some atkins 'chocolate' bar with no carbs and high protein that cost me like $4.80. it tastes like crap but at least it's something other than cucumber.

    grilled chicken for dinner tonight woohoo.

    seeing that ketosis is already happening has given me a brand new kick of motivation!

    also, a lot of the Atkins and no sugar chocolate bars also have Malitol in them which many people are sensitive to and will cause diarrhea. My Dh can not eat any of the no sugar stuff with Malitol as he will be in the bathroom all day. Doesn't affect me at all but a large population of people can't even handle a little bit. Hope that helps.

    oooh okay. i only ate one for the first time just now, so that wouldn't have caused it last night, but it might cause it again later.

    after eating the whole bar i realised how disgusting it actually was. made me feel kinda ill. think i'll go back to my cucumber haha.

    I only found a couple that were even slightly decent-although russel stover does make some really good no sugar chocolates with Splenda-Good luck with the diet-I lost 40 lbs on it with exercise and it kept my migraines away

    the one i just ate was an atkins advantage chocolate decadence bar. and let me tell you, there was nothing fucking chocolatey or decadent about it!

    Hmmm...I had the exact opposite problem when I started Atkins. I didn't go for like almost 7 days. Then I started eating flax meal and that helped. Hopefully this problem goes away for you soon. Just keep drinking LOTS of water and avoid eating too much artificial sweetener.

    i can really notice the coppery taste in my mouth today, and i'm reeeally tired.

    i am a loser. i looked up ketosis on wikipedia and it said that it's life threatening and being a hypochondriac and all i'm freaking out that i'll drop dead any second!

    You're ok-My BFF is a total hypochondriac and I can't ever let her look up anything on the internet. LOL Web MD is the scariest shit ever so be sure to stay away! Wiki is not reliable either. You're not going to die just be reasonable with the diet. (and continue with a few fruits and veggies just not the high sugar ones.) A great snack is Kashi Go Lean dry cereals too.

    i was craving nuts of some kind so bad today. i spent like 15 mins at the supermarket reading the nutrition information on the backs of every single packet of nuts they had to see if anything was low enough carb for me to eat, but alas, all chock full of carbs!

    You'll be fine, but your brain needs carbohydrates to function properly.

    That being said, I understand you need to prep for this shoot and you know it's not the best diet anyway, so just carb up a bit after all is said and done and get your body back into normal mode. Sorry about the diarrhea!! Cucumbers make me really gassy for some reason, but I kind of doubt that's the problem lol.

    Interesting find:
    "If, instead of starving, you’re following a low-carb diet, it gets even better. The protein you eat is converted to glucose instead of the protein in your muscles. If you keep the carbs low enough so that the liver still has to make some sugar, then you will be in fat-burning mode while maintaining your muscle mass, the best of all worlds. How low is low enough? Well, when the ketosis process is humming along nicely and the brain and other tissues have converted to ketones for fuel, the requirement for glucose drops to about 120-130 gm per day. If you keep your carbs below that at, say, 60 grams per day, you’re liver will have to produce at least 60-70 grams of glucose to make up the deficit, so you will generate ketones that entire time."

The current accepted practice in medical nutrition therapy is to not recommend ketogenic or fasting diets.     If you are craving nuts here are the stats:

    each of these serving sizes = about 5 carbs

    macadamias (approximately 10 to 12 nuts)
    walnuts (approximately 14 halves)
    almonds (approximately 14 nuts)
    pecans (approximately 14 halves)
    hulled sunflower seeds (3 tablespoons)
    roasted shelled peanuts (approximately 26 nuts)
    1/2 ounce of cashews (approximately 9 nuts)

    I like to snack on unsalted almonds. Also soy nut butter, macadamia butter and sunflower seed butter only have about 1 carb per tablespoon. I like to put it on celery or a low carb tortilla.

    Remember the goal is to eat low carb not NO carb. I eat anywhere from 20-40 carbs per day and I am still losing weight little by little. I was nervous about this new diet too...but then I read the Atkins books and it really explains a lot.

    today i had an atkins morning shine strawberry crisp soya bar, and that was okay too.

    ^ I like the chocolate chip Atkins morning bars. I thought the mocha Atkins shakes were pretty good too. They are pretty damn expensive though.
